RandalSchwartzhow are the RAID disks attached to the CPUs?
some sort of NFS mount? Or something far more reliable? )

reardencodeRandalSchwartz: It's likely that each physical box has the disks physically in the machine and then LVM creates logical volumes on those physical disks which are then connected to the VPSs
(Whether ARP uses hardware or software RAID I have no guess)
[13:44]
.... (idle for 16mn)
up_the_ironsyeah, what reardencode said :)
we use hardware raid
[14:00]
RandalSchwartzhow does that attach to my instance?
NFS?
or "in the same box"
or something else like eSATA?
just curious, because at $client, it's all NFS-mounted, exported from Solaris boxes running ZFS
and I seem to recall NFS... well... sucks.
[14:05]
up_the_ironsits in the same machine [14:06]
RandalSchwartzboth pairs of the RAID in the same machine too?
so if the CPU went dead there, someone would have to physically move it around?
[14:07]
up_the_ironsthe hard drives would be removed from the dead machine and placed into an identical spare
the spare is booted and it would look exactly like the old box
[14:07]
RandalSchwartzI don't suppose that happens very often though. :) [14:08]
up_the_ironsthe only machine that had a hardware failure was mercury in december. the raid controller failed
the controller also corrupted the disks, so that was a disaster to say the least
[14:10]
RandalSchwartzyeah, that'd be a mess. [14:10]
up_the_ironsFuck LSI(tm)
it was a MegaRAID card. Never Again
i replaced it with a 3ware 9650SE, the same like all my other boxes, and haven't had any issues
[14:10]
reardencodeup_the_irons: when that LSI card blew up what was the recovery strategy? Data forensics or rely on customers' backups? [14:15]
up_the_ironsreardencode: customer backups [14:16]
reardencodefigured -- it'd be cool if you could offer a snapshotting service for our LVM devices though. [14:16]
up_the_ironsreardencode: i've thought about it, but then it really decreases performance (dunno if you've worked with LVM snapshots before, but they really kill performance on the volume with snapshots enabled) [14:17]
reardencodeI haven't, gotcha. [14:17]
up_the_ironsnow, perhaps some people don't need screaming performance, but would like backups. so that would be a fair trade [14:18]
reardencodeI gotta say, I'm loving having disks that don't suck after moving to ARP from 1and1 (my leased server there had two of the slowest SATA disks ever in it)
What spindle speed are your boxen?
[14:19]
finkreardencode: it's all solid state
arp is the most advanced vps provider on the planet
[14:21]
reardencode::blink blink:: that would 'splain the speed and the cost per GB [14:21]
up_the_ironsreardencode: 7200 rpm
reardencode: i think fink was kidding, i don't have solid state disks
[14:24]
RandalSchwartzunless they melt into a solid piece of metal. :) [14:25]
up_the_ironsreardencode: i believe the performance gain in my setup is the hardware RAID 10 and a good controller [14:25]
RandalSchwartzsolid? check. state? useless. :) [14:25]
up_the_ironshaha [14:25]
reardencodegotcha, yeah, I'm seeing 180MB/s sequential, which is in SSD territory
fink: damn you for taking advantage of the gullible.
[14:25]
finksolid state BALLS [14:25]
up_the_ironsreardencode: how are you reaching that benchmark? [14:26]
reardencodeup_the_irons: just the naive diskinfo -t [14:26]
up_the_ironsah ok [14:26]
reardencodeand in that case, your prices-per-GB of storage is a bit high (not that I should complain considering your overall fantastic pricing) [14:27]
