twiggzhello, i just noticed that the free/openbsd vps specials are now coming with 400gb of transfer instead of 200gb.
Do I get that 400gb with the vps i have now?
If not, should'nt I? I paid for extra ip addresses and such...and if I dont, whats it going to take for me to get that extra 200gb ?
[13:11]
***InfectedSoul has joined #arpnetworks [13:14]
RandalSchwartzI think you simply pay a one-time nominal fee to get upgraded
after all someone at ARP has to type something on your behalf. :)
[13:19]
InfectedSoulbut why should he pay if they upgraded the EXTACT same plan [13:19]
RandalSchwartzbecause he bought a different plan
the old one
[13:19]
InfectedSoulya then they updated his plan... i think they should just give the extra 200gb [13:20]
RandalSchwartznope.
I don't agree.
they are not upgrading a plan
[13:20]
InfectedSoulthen thats bad for the business [13:20]
RandalSchwartzthey are offering a different plan that has more [13:20]
InfectedSouldude
they offer the 20/month plan with 400gb he bought it when it was 200gb
[13:20]
RandalSchwartzseriously. costs must be kept to minimum here. [13:20]
InfectedSoulthey should give him the dam 200gb [13:21]
RandalSchwartzyes - that's a DIFFERENT plan
why should he get a DIFFERENT plan without paying something?
[13:21]
InfectedSoulbecause its the same bullshit plan just an extra 200gb which wouldnt make a difference if the company is doing well [13:21]
RandalSchwartzthere's the $20 for 200GB plan (no longer being offered)
and the $20 for 400GB plan (currently being offered)
how hard is that to understand?
[13:21]
InfectedSoulthen jsut fucking upgrade his plan as hes bought alot of shit [13:22]
RandalSchwartzsure - for a nominal fee.
I think it's like $10 or so
[13:22]
InfectedSoulif it was my company i would because then its good customer service
nah should be free because the fucked him over
[13:22]
RandalSchwartzgo ahead and do it then.
go compete with arp
[13:23]
InfectedSouli could do 20 times better :) [13:23]
RandalSchwartzuntil you are doing it, you don't really know what does and doesn't cost money
and you're just bs'ing
[13:23]
InfectedSoulRandalSchwartz you dont think i work for a hosting company already? [13:23]
RandalSchwartzI don't really care
I'm just relaying facts.
[13:23]
InfectedSouli fucking know what costs money and what doesnt as im a system admin for them [13:24]
RandalSchwartzquestion asked and answered. next item. [13:24]
InfectedSoulIf the company changes any plans to something better the customer is always upgraded free of charge... thats how they kept the millions of customers they have [13:24]
RandalSchwartzgood for that company [13:24]
InfectedSouldude you dont even work here so stfukthxbia [13:24]
RandalSchwartzthat's not how it's done here.
no - I'm just a happy customer.
and a small business owner.
and even as a customer, I'm *glad* they charge for that kind of service.
[13:24]
twobithackergood afternoon [13:25]
RandalSchwartzbecause it keeps *my* costs down [13:25]
twiggzok
i can get down with a one time fee.
just how much would this fee be, RandalSchwartz?
[13:26]
twobithackeranyone know if there's a reason I shouldn't upgrade my VPS to FreeBSD 8.2-R? [13:26]
InfectedSoultwiggz i wouldnt if you bought extra shit [13:26]
RandalSchwartztwiggz - not sure, but it's nominal
just enough to pay for a few minutes of operator time :)
I think it's like $10 or $20
[13:26]
twiggztwobithacker: no, i wouldnt yet atleast. My 8.1 vps is still ticking strong and getting updates. Its not EOL so why upgrade unless you need some features?
10 bucks for a few minutes?
i can get my brakes changed for 40 bucks in half an hour.
lol
[13:27]
RandalSchwartzthen do that instead, if it's cheaper. :)
RandalSchwartz rolls eyes at nuttiness in the world
"I can get a coke for $1.50 - it shouldn't be any more than that!"
same logic :)
[13:28]
twiggznot saying i wont pay it, i just think thats a bit ...much. yes, im a cheapskate..which is why i have a vps with yout guys instead of keeping my corenetworks dedi to begin with. [13:28]
twobithackerI was mainly just figuring I'd upgrade since I was going to be recompiling the kernel anyway to start messing about with IPsec [13:29]
twiggzi prefer uptime over tinkering.
So, RandalSchwartz, you are aware of the pkg I have... freebsd vps, 200gb transfer, 5 ips...i want the extra 200gb transfer.
Being vague in what its going to cost me to get that is not pleasing me.
10 - 20 dollars is not very specific.
If its a one time 20 dollar fee, then so it is.
[13:30]
RandalSchwartzI don't work for the company. I'm just a customer. [13:33]
twiggzthen shut you damn mouth! [13:33]
RandalSchwartzI asked the same thing a few weeks ago, and was quoted with some small number like that. [13:33]
twiggzim not asking you! [13:33]
RandalSchwartzI don't remember the exact number, because it was "non-zero but small enough" [13:33]
twiggzim asking someone who works here. [13:33]
RandalSchwartzthere may not be anyone awake here right now
that's why I answered. :)
if there was, they would have answered 45 lines ago
and this conversation would be shorter. :)
[13:33]
twiggzim going to shoot them an email..on thing i cant say about arpnetworks..their support in email could use a kick in the ass.
they take forever.
otherwise ive had no problems.
[13:34]
RandalSchwartztwiggz - you do realize there's only two or three people in the company, right?
that's why the costs are so low
and they have day jobs elsewhere.
they'll answer email within 48 hours, usually 12 hours
but not much faster except by accident.
[13:34]
twiggzhow wonderful for them? no disrespect, but if youre going to run a business..do it right. [13:35]
RandalSchwartzuh - if you want 24x7 coverage, price the same thing at media temple
you'll pay a lot more
you chose this place for cost
and you get support at that level
[13:35]
twiggzno, i chose this place out of a recommendation
and then noticed tht it was nicely priced.
[13:36]
InfectedSoulwhats a paying job at a shell company? i work for free lol [13:36]
RandalSchwartzwell - it's agressively priced :) [13:36]
twobithackerpersonally, I've found arp to be more responsive and knowledgable than some other full-time VPS providers [13:36]
twiggztwobithacker: corenetworks responds to my emails withing no more than 15 minutes.
but they are insane.
they wanted 150 bucks to add a gig of ram to my dedi.
so i canceled their ass.
out of all the providers ive gone through ..even though corenetworks are some insane buttholes, they do respond to emails and tickets quicker than a somalian chasing an ice cream man...
[13:36]
RandalSchwartzand that's expensive
I'd rather ARP spend on good nets and hardware
that's why I'm here
I can put up with a 48-hour delay for a request
as long as it's not 72 hours :)
[13:38]
twiggzcorenetworks also responded to reports of a ddos and had them nulled in a 15 minute average also which is good...i havent found a provider thats done that in a long time ...
most of them just null traffic to your ip addresses and let you suffer instead of handling business.

joeDeuce is trying to create more routing problems for my irc network.
thats what his ass is doing.
son of a bitch
[14:02]
joeDeucelol
nah, trying to kick linode to the curb
go all FreeBSD
[14:04]
twiggzyou should.
freebsd is win
linux is a nice desktop..but its not a very nice server.
[14:04]
joeDeucei could attempt a FreeBSD install on linode... i don't think it would be easy though [14:05]
twiggzfreebsd is a nice desktop also if you dont count that it doesnt support alot of big name mp3 players and other media players that linux does
they are to worried about catering to the apple emos.
so i keep debian testing on my desktop, freebsd on servers...
wheezyyyyy (in george jefferson voice)
openbsd is a nice quick desktop if you are only interested in certain applications for it ...
as a whole.if you dont mind old shit ...openbsd is nice..
freebsd is kept much more up to date ports wise.
[14:05]
joeDeuceopenbsd as "tidy" as freebsd? [14:10]
twiggzeven more so if you ask me
its more simplified also
just my opinion
dude on sindustries.org irc has a sparc running openbsd...im tempted to link him just so i can have a shell on it ...lame reason i know...
openbsd has its ports also...
shit, i can install openbsd atleast 3 minutes quicker on any box you give me compared to freebsd ...xorg and all...
freebsd does not come with xorg.
lol
scuse me..xenocara...
openbsd has no xorg, the afro engineer up xorg their own way and call it xenocara.
no idea why...you still run X -configure and everything else to get it going.
i try not to pay much attention to openbsd devs in their channels, acting all high and mighty and shit....bitter because their OS is not really used very widely outside of driver development.
[14:12]
DaCaDaCa eyeballs the OpenBSD devs in this channel [14:19]
twiggzyeah, they dont have respect for anyone...why should anyone respect them?
#openbsd is probably the most hostile channel i join.
which isnt alot, because i hate freenode and the fascists that run it with all their anal rules.
[14:29]
RandalSchwartzthe opensolaris channel is more hostile than openbsd [14:32]
twiggzslowlaris
people have died waiting on that bullshit to install
[14:32]
RandalSchwartzbecause they're all "why are you using osol if you weren't already a solaris user" [14:32]
twiggzsolaris is crap on anything but a sparc to begin with..portability is not a concern even on their list as far as i can tell..
id rather openbsd or freebsd on a sparc.
[14:33]
RandalSchwartzwell - I went to osol for zfs on EC2
now you can get fbsd on ec2, so it's easier
[14:36]
greenskeletonwhen it's running :) [14:38]
RandalSchwartzyeah - when ec2 runs :) [14:38]
greenskeletonof course, freebsd has no fault in that
nor osol
[14:39]
***twobithacker has joined #arpnetworks [14:47]
twiggzi have no use for zfs
sure its got alot of features
but its also resource hoggy
and its not like i cant make backups or do anything else with ufs2
:/
zfs isnt that great.
[14:48]
twobithackerZFS snapshots are much nicer than UFS2 snapshots
like you can just restore a snapshot to the live filesystem
and creating them doesn't lock up the FS for a minute
[14:50]
twiggzive never had ufs2 snapshots lock any system of mine up
and if ufs2 works...then it works...
[14:51]
twobithackerreally? on a 600GB dataset it take me about a minute to snapshot UFS2, during which all reads and writes are locked [14:52]
twiggzi dont need 90% of the zfs features...nor do i need it hogging up my resources. [14:52]
pilgrimdLike any technology, you have to match the filesystem to the use pattern.
I run UFS on most of my VPSes simply because it's a single disk and the image is almost completely static. Carve off a bit for var, stuff all the changing stuff there. Done.
On a fileserver with terabyte-scale volumes? No way I'd use UFS.
[14:57]
twiggzon a server with tereabyte + drives, you also hav emoney for the ram zfs eats. [15:01]
pilgrimdWell yes. :)
My home server has 18 GB of memory.
[15:01]
twiggz2gb of ram has always been sufficient...i have a debian stable dedi with 512mb that runs more shit than you would think...
and it ticks on faithfully.
[15:02]
pilgrimdBut you probably aren't running VMs on it, which is what my home server does. [15:02]
twiggzthat servers alot more shit for fun than ive seen production servers do [15:02]
pilgrimdI swear the VM industry is single-handedly propping up the RAM industry. [15:03]
twiggzthats what i used my corenetworks dedi for
leasing vps /jails
freebsd jails make excellent vps
that was 2 years ago
[15:03]
pilgrimdI had some of those for a while. It was OK, but the lack of an addressable loopback interface was a pain often. [15:03]
twiggzi made a bit of money and got tired of screwing with it all the time [15:03]
twobithackerpilgrimd: vimage is supposed to fix that, but right now it breaks a bunch of other stuff [15:04]
twiggza freebsd jail is better than a xen VM imo
thank god these folks use qemu
xen is the devil.
[15:04]
twobithackerjails are great if you don't need to do resource reservations [15:04]
twiggzdefine resource reservations. [15:05]
twobithackerfixed memory and cpu utilization on a per-vm basis [15:05]
twiggzyou can allocate so much ram so much cpu time to a jail
and disc space
[15:05]
twobithackerreally? when did they add that? [15:06]
twiggzill be fucked if i remember how after two years ...i just use ezjail now for my own personal use
im not leasing them out to people for vps anymore so i dont remember, blame my barbituate and alcohol regiment.
[15:06]
twobithackerI remember Verio saying at BSDCan a few years back that they were going to submit their jail resource management code back to core
but I didn't think it ever happened
[15:08]
twiggzplus id rather a freebsd system inside of a real freebsd system compared to some ubuntu crap running freebsd on top of it...
which is probably what i have with arpnetworks
:/
but atleast its qemu and not xen...and its been stable.
i know this shit runs on some sort of linux
its the easy way out
[15:08]
RandalSchwartzarp runs kvm/qemu, and runs it on linux hosts
could the same thing work on freebsd hosts?
[15:11]
twiggzyeap.
for instance, qemu is the only VM software openbsd offers iirc
if it works on obsd, damn sure it runs on freebsd.
freebsd is much more up to date and offers alot more software in ports/pkgs than obsd does.
[15:12]
