medumare inbound connections on port 25 purposely blocked? [12:58]
anti can connect to my vps just fine on port 25, so no [13:01]
medumi see nothing with tcpdump when i try to connect on port 25. i changed opensmtpd to a different port and it worked fine [13:02]
antmaybe there's a filter somewhere else? [13:03]
medumhm. maybe my isp [13:04]
antactually this would be reasonable. most end-user shouldn't run mail-servers so there's no need for outbound smtp (clients should use the submission port). and blocking end-users from using smtp is great to reduce spam [13:06]

jpalmermany ISP's block 25 outbound. [14:37]

jdoeOH EM GEE ME TOO LOOL
medum: your isp likely blocks 25. Happily that's what 587 is for, open that up in your MTA of choice (with auth/whatnot) and ... yeah.
[23:07]
mike-burnsI stopped running my own mail server recently. Fastmail FTW! [23:09]
mercutioit's got more and more complicated to run your own mail server... [23:19]
finkfreaking spam, man [23:20]
***fink has quit IRC (Quit: fink) [23:21]
jdoeI don't agree, but whatever works for you.
I find it's pretty much set it and forget it.
[23:24]
mercutiohmm [23:24]
jdoe... but I only provide mail for myself. [23:24]
mercutiodo you get much spam?
do you sign with dkim?
domainkeys?
do you have spf records?
rbl blocking? grey listing?
etc etc...
[23:24]
jdoedomainkeys is dead, I sign with dkim, I have braindead spf records, I use two rbls, I don't greylist intentionally. [23:25]
mercutioso dkim, and spf is something extra to do [23:25]
jdoe(but postscreen greylists as a byproduct of existing when someone uses ssl)
sure, but you don't HAVE to do either.
[23:25]
mercutioi hate greylisting myself
mm
[23:26]
jdoeme too, and I would prefer if postscreen didn't do it. [23:26]
mercutiodepends if you want to send email to yahoo [23:26]
jdoebut since I'm not about to submit a patch to let it pass around openssl state.... [23:26]
mercutiotbh most of the spam i get comes from yahoo or gmail
and is signed
i think people send through there cos they're more trusted?
[23:26]
jdoein any case, email is a solved problem.
if you constantly need to maintain it, you've done something very wrong.
[23:27]
mercutionah i don't need to
but i'ms aying it's more complicated than it used to be
[23:27]
jdoesure, but it's one-time effort.
you setup spf/dkim once (or however often you want to roll dkim keys)
rbls/spam filtering/whatever once.
etc.
[23:28]
mercutioyeah, but you understand this stuff pretty well? [23:28]
jdoeI guess? There's always someone smarter. Or hundreds/thousands of people smarter ;) [23:29]
mercutioit's like the level of knowledge required has got higher
i have been running my own mail server for over 10 years.. i'm not exactly putting in the "too hard" basket or anything
but every now and then i've had to implement things along the way
[23:29]
