kthelenAny ARP support folks here? [12:05]
RandalSchwartzanything we can help with?
if not, then email support@
best way
[12:07]
kthelenHave a VPS that is unresponsive, and I'm locked out of the portal
Tried emailing support, no response yet
[12:07]
RandalSchwartzyeah, support is typically 24-hour turnaround
locked out of portal how?
[12:07]
kthelenCan't remember password, can't reset because email address associated with account is hosted on said VPS [12:08]
RandalSchwartzthat would be a two mistakes. :(
perhaps you'll remember to fix both of those next time.
[12:08]
kthelenYeah, I know. Been forever since I've had to use the portal. [12:09]
RandalSchwartzin the meanwhile, likely you'll have to wait a bit [12:09]
kthelenOkay, thought I'd check [12:09]
***kthelen has left [12:09]
RandalSchwartzHmm. now that you mention it, I bet my portal email points at the VPS host
I should change it to my gmail addr
I keep the password in 1Password though
so I wouldn't be locked out by that

up_the_ironsRandalSchwartz: you can define an "alternate" email address in the Portal as well [13:40]
RandalSchwartzahh... that's probably what I'll do then [13:41]
wxyzup_the_irons, for memory upgrade we need to reboot the vps right? [13:41]
up_the_ironswxyz: yup [13:41]
wxyzok, i'll wait don't want to lost my beautiful uptime :p [13:41]
up_the_ironswxyz: what are you up to? [13:42]
RandalSchwartzlong uptimes are like big swinging d**k contests. :)
a sign of immaturity at best.
I reboot often.

vcs:(
im small
[13:43]
RandalSchwartzat least replace it with mariadb [13:43]
up_the_irons$ uptime

vcsway to make us all look bad [13:44]
wxyznice one up_the_irons :P [13:44]
vcs:P [13:44]
up_the_ironsLOL [13:44]
RandalSchwartzpackage integration? [13:44]
up_the_ironsup_the_irons googles mariadb [13:44]
vcsRandalSchwartz: don't most distros include mysql but not mariadb
you have to download it etc
build from source
[13:45]
RandalSchwartzup_the_irons - it's monty's followon to mysql [13:45]
vcsalot of people dont like that hassle
and the maintanence that comes with it
[13:45]
RandalSchwartzvcs - debian distros yes [13:45]
vcsah [13:45]
RandalSchwartzbut they are trying to work that out
the problem is that maria installs like it's mysql
so both of them share the same paths
and debian can't do that
but fedora is just fine with it
and there's a freebsd port already
totally integrated
[13:45]
vcsnice [13:46]
up_the_ironsnice [13:46]
RandalSchwartzit's also faster than mysql
and has features for per-row columns
essentially giving you NoSQL flexibility
and it's 99.99% compatible with mysql
I interviewed monty two days ago for FLOSS Weekly
so my new mantra is "just say no to mysql... replace with mariadb please"
[13:46]

***amdprophet has joined #arpnetworks [13:49]
RandalSchwartzyou can also get RPMS there... even though Debian upstream won't host them
so it's just a matter of adding a repo
[13:50]
vcsDont run debian servers of any kind [13:50]
up_the_ironsunless u want the uptime I posted above
(Ubuntu 9.04) ;)
[13:51]
vcs:P
thats pretty ace tbh
[13:51]
up_the_ironsLOL [13:51]
vcsno sort of leaks or anything
thats the true test of code
to run that long
[13:51]
up_the_ironsthat's kvr02 BTW, so you guys who are on that box, enjoy that uptime [13:51]
RandalSchwartz... http://kb.askmonty.org/en/spamexperts-migrating-300-servers-to-mariadb [13:52]
up_the_ironsyeah and it is a true test b/c it is a real production system running VMs all day long, not an idle machine doing nothing [13:52]
RandalSchwartz... http://kb.askmonty.org/en/mariadb-versus-mysql-features
heh... one of the incompatibilities: Timings may be different as MariaDB is in many cases faster than MySQL.
[13:53]
vcslol
ill have to try it out

***ifthen has joined #arpnetworks [15:52]
ifthenDid /usr/ports/x11/xorg last night on my FreeBSD shell here last night. Took a few hours, froze once, but I have the xclock running. Thanks to ARP networks.
That is make install clean.
[15:56]
RandalSchwartzhope you did that inside a tmux. :) [15:58]
ifthenno what is that?
ignorance is bliss
[15:59]
RandalSchwartztmux is like screen, but better
great if you would like to go away and come back
[16:01]
ifthenok I run screen but will check it out. [16:01]
RandalSchwartzyeah, I used screen for years, started tmux six months ago, and won't go back [16:02]
ifthenis it a unix thing? [16:02]
RandalSchwartzuh - you just said you're on freebsd
I presume that's unix :)
[16:03]
ifthenyes [16:03]
RandalSchwartzcd /usr/ports/*/tmux; make install [16:03]
ifthenbut I didn't know which end of the server/client thing [16:03]
RandalSchwartzsame place screen is
it's a direct better replacement for screen
[16:03]
ifthenRandal why do you prefer it? [16:04]
RandalSchwartzit's better
... http://www.wikivs.com/wiki/Screen_vs_tmux
[16:04]
ifthenFWj
Well screen is hard to configure.
ok will check out wiki.
[16:04]
RandalSchwartztmux has far more config options, but most of the defaults are sane.
my .tmux.rc is still only about 10 lines
the first three things I install on every new freebsd box: portmaster, tmux, and zsh
and then I launch my tmux session for *everything else*
[16:05]
ifthenthanks for tips [16:06]
mike-burnsI couldn't figure out ctrl-a ctrl-a in tmux.
Or maybe it was ctrl-a space.
[16:06]
RandalSchwartzI use ^ as my escape [16:07]
mike-burnsSure. [16:07]
ifthencontrl -a gets me out of screen kill all windows [16:08]
RandalSchwartz^ d for me is detach
I exit by going to each window and exiting that specifically
then it auto exits
or I just close my window at this end, and it auto-detaches
tmux supports external scripting
all the internal commands can be run with "tmux command..." in a shell
so you can get pretty crazy
RandalSchwartz wanders off
[16:09]
ifthenI actually enjoyed watching the screen text roll by last night.
So much of it
so many little hitches that don't seem to matter.
I noticed a lot of visits to tld .hk
x.org didn't field many requests.
