vcsHey, anyone resized their root filesystem on BSD before in KVM? I cant seem to find my disk device, just the individual partition /dev/wd0a
is it safe to just use growfs without using disklabel
[08:13]
toddfhah
growfs reads disklabel to see how much to grow it
[08:15]
***schmir has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) [08:16]
vcsahhh ok, so im guessing what i read was a really old tutorial [08:16]
toddftry the man page
DESCRIPTION The growfs utility extends the newfs(8) program. Before starting growfs, the partition must be set to a larger size using disklabel(8). The growfs utility extends the size of the file system on the specified special file.
[08:28]
vcstoddf: i did read that, but I can't run disklabel since there is no /dev/wd0 [08:30]
toddfdid you type: disklabel -E wd0
?
there is no /dev/wd0 nor should there be. there is however /dev/wd0c. please understand why. ;-)
[08:31]
jpalmerI think this might be a wise time to remind everyone of the importance of backups. done BEFORE attempting to manipulate a disk ;) [08:33]
vcsjpalmer: that I am one step ahead on :P [08:34]
jpalmervcs: awesome. [08:34]
vcsthe only thing that would annoy me however is if i had to re upload it all
at 1.5 mbit/s
[08:34]
jpalmervcs: it never ceases to amaze me the number of times I see an experienced admin make that fatal mistake. [08:35]
vcsyep [08:35]
jpalmervcs: if you have another vps, you could scp it from one to the other over the local lan. [08:35]
vcsif i really wanted to be careful
i would upload it all to my colocated box
well technically its not mine lol
[08:37]
jpalmerbut then you fall into the same upload/download speed limitation. local lan is many times faster than over the WAN [08:38]
vcsyep
jpalmer its alot of data
i will be very careful doing the growfs
will get read up on it more later tonight
[08:38]
jpalmermock it up in a lab environment first! [08:39]
vcsgood idea :) [08:40]
***zeeby has joined #arpnetworks [08:43]
zeebyHi, are you guys still waiting on additional hardware for your vps offerings?
And if so, do you have anything in asia or eu?
[08:44]
toddfto the best of my knowledge (customer here) there is only the one site. the order page should reflect availability of hardware.
all I can say is it is worth the wait for the price and services. well worth the wait.
[08:46]
zeebyI've been told that the service is very good; we're trying to move away from another provider which has been a nightmare
and you guys are one of the few who support openbsd as well
[08:46]
toddftell me about it.
I looked far and wide.
[08:47]
zeebyI take it you run openbsd as well :) [08:47]
***robotarmy has joined #arpnetworks [08:47]
toddfso many are using the openvz which may as well be 'jail with the word VPS stamped on top' tech for linux it isn't funny
grep todd /dev/MAKEDEV. tis me.
[08:47]
zeebycool, do you know which driver they use under openbsd for their vm's?
I've had a bitch of a time trying to explain to another provider that I need e1000 :/
But that seems to cause an information overload on the other guys heh
[08:48]
toddftime is not pleantiful, so I don't overload often. ;-)
em0 at pci0 dev 3 function 0 "Intel PRO/1000MT (82540EM)" rev 0x03: irq 11, address ...
[08:50]
zeebywonderful [08:50]
toddfsince it is kvm based, it has been realized that it is the bios itself that provides an improper mpbios table on UP systems, real hw wouldn't provide one at all, upgrading the bios would not permit the F12 option to let customers boot from cd on their own, and that is deemed necessary here. ;-)
hence the 'config -ef /bsd' 'disable mpbios' being the only workaround to maintain your own kernels.
[08:51]
***Sunil has joined #arpnetworks [08:52]
zeebyyeah, had to do the same on a xen based one as well [08:52]
toddfprobably using the same bios ;-) [08:53]
coobrawhen can i get a vps here :( [08:53]
toddfso there's basically an open offer here that kvm can be updated if someone figures out a bios that works with the newer kvm sources and still provides an option (f12 or otherwise) to optionally boot from the cdrom through the vnc interface.
coobra: look at the order page, it should give the most info any of us have.
[08:54]
coobra;o [08:58]
toddfgenerally speaking, order placement sooner gets you a vps sooner, hardware is either available, and provisioning happens overnight, or hardware is not available, and provisioning happens overnight once hardware is available. [09:00]

RandalSchwartzlucky - any request might take up to 48 hours or so
depends on the backlog and availability of critical resources (Gary) :)
apparently, you also have to completely power down your VPS too... not just reboot.
[14:55]
luckyhm, ididn't read that anywhere. [14:59]
RandalSchwartzdidn't read what?
I know only because Gary told me after he did it.
wasn't something I had "read"
[14:59]
luckythat you have to powerdown the VPS for him to go ahead and do it. [15:00]
RandalSchwartzNo no
he can make the change.
[15:00]
luckyor do you only have to power down to make it take effect? [15:00]
RandalSchwartzbut yiou won't see it until you power down [15:00]
luckyah, that's no worries then. [15:00]
RandalSchwartzhe's basically editing a file to point to the new media
but that's read only on a cold start
ok - enough chatting at 40 cents a minute (cruise ship satellite)
