RandalSchwartzupgraded chris to 8.1p1, and all ports are now fresh
next - upgrade mabel from 8.0 to 8.1p1, and then all ports
using special instructions from http://forums.freebsd.org/showpost.php?p=94557&postcount=19
[07:48]
.... (idle for 15mn)
hmm. my upgrade seems paused at "preparing to download files"
how much preparation does it take? :)
[08:04]
nesta:o
hehe
[08:05]
RandalSchwartzit's building a fortress for them to land in. :)
"making runways..."

[08:05]

mike-burnsHah. [08:06]
RandalSchwartz"indexing..."
"re-indexing..."
[08:06]
jpalmerjpalmer suddenly got flashbacks of being like.. 10, and putting the kitchen chairs together, and draping a blanket over them. "I'll defend my fort until death!" [08:06]
nesta:d [08:10]
RandalSchwartzwow - the whole box is sluggish
i wonder what it's actually doing
[08:15]
bob^^rm -rf / ;) [08:15]
jpalmergive it a red bull. [08:16]
nestalol [08:16]
mike-burnsGive it a Four Loko. [08:16]
jpalmeryou're loco!
so, I bought one of those house vaccuuming robots. and, I'm not going to lie.. best. money. ever. spent.
[08:16]
bob^^hah!
a roomba?
[08:18]
jpalmerfiancee used to be a veterinary tech, so she'd bring home all kinds of cats.. the house is all hardwood and tile, so pet hair collects badly. we used to vacuum daily.
bob^^ I decided against the roomba, and got a different one. my friend has a roomba and I didn't care for it.
[08:18]
bob^^ah, which did you get?
i was strongly considering getting one so it can hoover my house while i'm out :)
[08:19]
jpalmerI got an XV-11 from neato. the reviews for it were impressive, and so far, it's done an amazing job. [08:20]
bob^^cool :) [08:20]
jpalmerand unlike a roomba, it doesn't bump into everything (it has a dizzying array of sensors, and onboard radar) [08:20]
bob^^bah, doesn't seem to be available in the UK yet [08:21]
jpalmercaveat: I have no rugs or carpet, anywhere in my house.
hah, send it to me, and pay shipping. I'll mail it :P
[08:21]
bob^^hahaha :D
i wonder how it would enjoy eating 240v ;)
[08:22]
jpalmerlol
the day we got it, my fiancee wanted to see how well it worked. so we spent like 2 hours vaccuuming the house, and mopping every square inch. it still filled the collection bin.
[08:22]
bob^^wow [08:23]
jpalmerit honestly didn't surprise me. one of the reviews I'd read (from an independant company) said that before he sent it back to neato, he had his carpets professionally steam cleaned.. and then ran it.. and it STILL picked up stuff. [08:25]
bob^^hahah
i'm going to keep an eye out for it arriving in the UK
[08:25]
jpalmerheh watch the videos for it. it's pretty cool. I can't help but to sit here and watch it while working sometimes :P [08:26]
bob^^lol
i'd do that too
[08:26]
jpalmer(which actually kind of defeats the point of having it. I bought it so it could clean while I do other things.. but if I'm just watching it.. I'm not doing other things!) [08:26]
bob^^it's a robot that's cleaning up for you, we've finally arrived in the future!
when i was very young i had a book about "computers" and robots
and what might come in the future
there was a section in it about robots that could clean the house for us
they didn't look like roomba hehe
[08:27]
jpalmeroh! and get this.. if it's cleaning and runs low on battery.. it goes back to it's charging station.. fills up, and starts up again where it left off (the roomba can do this too btw) [08:28]
bob^^yeah :)
that is very cool
[08:28]
RandalSchwartzok - hardbooted the system, and shut down all the services this time
it was probably competing memorywise
[08:28]
jpalmerI know a week or so ago, up_the_irons doubled the bandwidth for new VPS's. he talked about having a 1 time fee to upgrade existing vps's.. did he ever decide on how that was going to be done? [08:31]
.... (idle for 17mn)
RandalSchwartzyeay - files finally being downloaded
it did help to shut everything down

RandalSchwartz2 of 4 machines upgraded
it takes a lot longer to go from 8.0 to 8.1 on a VPS than I imagined
doing the other two tomorrow
[18:46]
finkRandalSchwartz: what's wrong?
are you rebuilding all your ports?
[18:47]
RandalSchwartznot in this upgrade, no
just took 90 minutes for the upgrade
and after that was done, I was getting into prime time
so I had to roll over to tomorrow
my laptop tests had shown closer to 30 minutes
so apparently I wasn't testing the right setup
might be the ZFS-on-raid that we have here
[18:47]
finkRandalSchwartz: how much free ram do you have on your zfs on root vpses [18:50]
RandalSchwartzvaries by machine
one of them is the $20/month deal
that's the one I upgraded today
four different machines, four slightly different plans :)
[18:52]
finkRandalSchwartz: maybe on the others, where you have more ram, it will go faster [18:56]
RandalSchwartzhard to tell
it's mostly read-only in the slow spots
trying to figure out what to change
[18:56]
.......... (idle for 47mn)
ziyourenxiangseeing as there are freebsd sysadmins here who might be running osx, anyway has had joy with 7.3-RELEASE X11 running on vmware fusion or parallels desktop 6? lubuntu installs and runs X11 no problem, but for freebsd the mouse doesn't work.
i copied the xorg.conf over.
[19:44]
RandalSchwartzisn't 7.3 EOLed? [19:50]
finkziyourenxiang: why not use 8.1? [19:50]
ziyourenxiang7.3 is "LTS". coz my server is still 7.3. i'm running a virtualised "test" setup for my server.
my server doesnt' have X though.
[19:51]
RandalSchwartzRandalSchwartz is confused
"X question" and "doesn't have X" don't grok
[19:52]
finkyou have an X windows environment on your server? [19:53]
ziyourenxiangi run squeak headless on my server. i'm trying to build cogvm on freebsd. the "stack" version of the vm builds, but crashes instantly when run. so now i need to have an X environment to build squeak cog "better".
fink, no, i don't.
[19:53]
RandalSchwartzsounds like you need to install X [19:54]
ziyourenxiangyes, i'm trying to install X on my virtualised freebsd running on my osx. no joy so far. [19:54]
finkor you could build a package on your working server and just transfer/install it [19:54]
ziyourenxiangwell, i got lubuntu running, but cogvm didn't compile cleanly either, so i stopped there. [19:54]
RandalSchwartzRandalSchwartz googles lubuntu [19:55]
finkziyourenxiang: i've never used vmware, but virtualbox running freebsd has worked quite well on osx for me [19:55]
RandalSchwartzI've used both. either one is fine
but you need to have the right packages on lubuntu
[19:55]
ziyourenxiangfink, with X? ok, i'll give it a try. [19:55]
RandalSchwartzit might not have installed with X11
especially in a virt env
[19:56]
finkziyourenxiang: no, i've never used X11 on freebsd, sorry [19:56]
ziyourenxiangRandalSchwartz, lubuntu comes with lxde, a diet X11 desktop. [19:56]
RandalSchwartzziyourenxiang - does it have a full x11 dev env though?
if not, you need to install more
[19:56]
ziyourenxiangfink, thanks. i have freebsd running in text mode for very long time now, on powerbook and macbook. [19:57]
RandalSchwartzx11 dev is rarely the same as x11 enduser [19:57]
ziyourenxiangRandalSchwartz, yes. i did a bunch of sudo apt-get blah. the compilation broke in some squeak specifics. it isn't that it cannot find the X11 headers/libraries. i know what to fix - same problem as on freebsd. but since i don't run ubuntu seriously, i stopped there.
never had the need to run virtualised freebsd with X11 until now.
[19:58]
finkziyourenxiang: i don't envy your situation ;) [19:59]
ziyourenxiangwell, the cog vm is 3 times faster (on silly benchmarks) so, while i don't *absolutely* need it on my server, i want it. :-) [19:59]
RandalSchwartzin a short time, it'll be the standard vm
we're already talking about making it so
and also debating the 4.2 release schedule. :)
[20:04]
ziyourenxiangstandard is no good, if it doesn't build/run on freebsd. [20:06]
RandalSchwartzit probably does
just something you have to work out
but yeah, I got stopped on freebsd too
I asked, didn't get much support
even for the *normal* vm
people who live linux lives don't realize how unfriendly they are to other actual unix platforms
all the crappy gnu-isms that sneak in
[20:06]
ziyourenxiangyep. [20:07]
RandalSchwartzas in, how could anyone possibly pick bash as a default shell. :( [20:07]
finkheh bash [20:07]
RandalSchwartzespecially since the standard ksh is available
and more recently, I've used zsh as my default
at least bash makes csh look tolerable by comparison :)
[20:07]
finkfink likes csh… [20:09]
RandalSchwartzgo read "csh considered harmful" [20:10]
finkRandalSchwartz: i'm not going to read it, because i might be enlightened, and i find that possibility disconcerting
blissful ignorance is where it's at
[20:11]
azmarco< RandalSchwartz> people who live linux lives don't realize how
unfriendly they are to other actual unix platforms
heh. would you mind passing that on to the rxtx folks?
[20:13]
RandalSchwartzwhat is rxtx
or are you going to make me google for it? :)

azmarco googles
azmarco doesn't rate the doesn't-have-to-google-shit that RandalSchwartz does
[20:20]
finkazmarco: how do you program the arduino? [20:22]
azmarcogcc-avr
for about 99% of the time. the rest, it's the arduino ide on windows
i am working on a port to make dev on obsd easier
fink: phidgets looks cool, but it also just looks like they made it more complicated than it needs to be
[20:22]
finkazmarco: well, i like it because you can use python [20:25]
azmarcospecifically, i don't get the need for all the usb
this is true
[20:25]
finkazmarco: usb is about as cross platform as it gets, nowadays [20:25]
azmarcotrue, but i have some 20g wire that disagrees heh [20:26]
finkazmarco: have you seen the sheevaplug? [20:26]
azmarcoyes [20:26]
finkazmarco: can you use python with the arduino? [20:26]
azmarcoi was trying to help port obsd to the seagate dockstar, which is *very* similar, but alas, my daughter was born
not that i know of, but i'm sure some one has python and the arduinos talking to each other
[20:26]
