mattx86is anyone here good at reading smartctl output?
I've never been sure about smartctl output.. always kinda fuzzy
http://mattx86.org/pub/smartctl-all-sda.txt
AFAICT, it's "ok", it's just not in the database, so the attribute values may not be correct
[01:52]
...... (idle for 27mn)
LTif the drive thought there was a problem with some of the attributes it would usually write something in the error log
as an extended test passed ok I would say it's fine
[02:25]
mattx86ok [02:35]
I just spotted the SMART Error Log section that I'm sure you're referring to
besides the SMART Self-test log structure section

mattx86one more question: would you guys say that KVM performs better than Xen?
the reason I ask is that my linode (Xen) vps is always slow when typing recently
I'm gonna disable my QoS and see it if helps

looks like my adsl is what's (still) acting up *sigh* [03:04]

mattx86I just received an e-mail about this: http://www.realsoftware.com/web/
sounds awesome from the bit I skimmed over
for those of you into web development ^
[08:17]
mike-burnsIs that Visual Basic? [08:20]
mattx86the realstudio/realbasic stuff is like vb, but its cross platform [08:21]
mike-burnshttp://www.realsoftware.com/web/gallery/debugging_thumb.png
Oh that's not what I wanted.
http://www.realsoftware.com/web/gallery/debugging.png
[08:21]
mattx86that's basically what realstudio looks like
almost exactly in fact
reminds me of Delphi for PHP
except I didn't like that heh
[08:22]
mike-burnsYeah. [08:23]
mattx86in any case, this at least looks interesting [08:23]
mike-burnsI don't think the Web is ready for WYSIWYG.
Which I think is what this is?
[08:23]
mattx86btw, runrev, which is similar to realbasic/realstudio, has also had a web version for a little while
but runrev is "out there" in terms of syntax
yeah, looks like it, more or less
I'd considered rolling my own wysiwig interface/framework in PHP and XML
[08:24]
mike-burnsrunrev is an Algol syntax? [08:26]
mattx86I've got my own PHP framework (not yet released), but I'd basically dismissed the webgui idea as being overly complicated and too limiting [08:26]
mike-burnsYeah. [08:26]
mattx86hm.. not sure.. only tried the desktop version once
I still get e-mails from them, but its nice to see what they're up to
er, if you said anything after I mentioned the e-mails I still get, I accidentally did Ctrl+L on xchat and cleared the window's buffer
I meant to do Ctrl+L in firefox for the address bar ;)
[08:26]
mike-burnsAh I didn't, you lucked out. [08:30]
mattx86hey, do you guys know off hand if US-residents have to pay EU's VAT on services?
I didn't think we did ... but this vps provider tells me otherwise
(I'm signing up for ARP soon enough; I'm getting a US and UK provider for redundant service(s))
[08:32]
LTVAT is different for products/services - I think you're exempt for products that are shipped out of the EU, but not services [08:35]
mattx86hrm [08:37]
LTout of interest what UK provider are you using? I have a vps in .nl that's a bit unreliable and could do with a new home [08:39]
mattx86it came down to a toss-up between goscomb.net and portfast.co.uk, because of the distro I plan to use, I need full hardware virtualization (HV)
I strongly considered bytemark.co.uk, but they don't allow custom VPS's on their KVM setup (I'm assuming they use KVM in PV mode)
so, with goscomb's lightning fast response times to e-mails (even on a sunday!), their hardware setup and routing peers, I decided to go with them
basically, the only providers I considered were ones with IPv6 and HV mode
I did run across 4 EU VPS providers that weren't listed at http://hosting.4or6.com/ and they're now the last 6 on there
with portfast being one of them
I can post the e-mails where I was asking those first three about their hardware/software if you want
portfast tho, is basically identical to arp
[08:40]
LTI'd never heard of portfast either... interesting. good work digging up those extra v6 providers [08:48]
mattx86although, you might have to request that you get placed on a newer node with a redundant PSU
in fact, I would, if you decided to go with them.. but yeah, check it out
yeah, np
the thing with goscomb is that they don't use redundant PSUs, but they kinda compensate for that by have a RAID50 SAN
having*
thats my take though; not their words exactly
portfast actually peers with goscomb, but looking at http://bgp.he.net/AS8916 seems to indicate that they don't pull all of goscomb's routes
so that's kind of a turn off
[08:48]
LTnot having a redundant PSU isn't the end of the world anyway, so long as there's someone around to hot-swap it relatively quickly. I mainly need it for backup dns/mx so 100% uptime isn't paramount [08:53]
mattx86plus the fact that portfast kind of feels like a 2-man show or something along those lines
however, the portfast guy did reply to me around noon saturday in the UK
ah
the second time, yesterday (monday), I sent an e-mail at what would have been around 2pm in the UK, but he replied around 11pm in the UK
so, not sure about what happened there exactly
relatively simple 2-question e-mail
the first one on saturday, he replied to in about 2.5 hours or so - it was about 7 AM here when he replied, so I was happy
it wouldn't have been a big deal really, except when I noticed how much faster goscomb was replying every time
felt like the right choice
[08:53]
LTquite a big difference in ram for the price though [08:59]
mattx86RAM, bandwidth, and disk!
128MB, 5GB, 50GB -> 512MB, 20GB, 100GB
[09:00]
LTtrue... did you look at sovps? that's another one that's popped up since I last looked at the 4or6 list [09:01]
mattx86but I figured for the routes, the SAN, and fast service that goscomb seems to have, it was a better deal in the long run
I did.. they also do blueroom whatcha-call-it
yeah blueroomhosting.com
RRD Labs
there's a post on webhostingtalk, where they say sovps is the cheaper service they provide, with less/unmanaged support
I can't remember what exactly I didn't like about them, except that their sovps site looked kinda funky
(although it's basically the same layout as blueroom, but different colors, etc)
I'd only e-mails those three providers though; goscomb, portfast, and bytemark
I've only emailed*
btw though, you might click the dedicated server link at the top of 4or6; you might find a provider that does both dedicated and vps that's not listed on the vps page
but I better jump on this vps installation with goscomb before they close (that is, if they ever sleep) heh
[09:02]
LTthanks for the insight... you've obviously put quite a bit of thought into it, save me doing so [09:09]
mattx86I know I don't hehe
ah, you're welcome
[09:09]
LTand can definitely recommend arp for your US VPS [09:10]
mattx86yeah, they seem like a good bunch
that's why I scouted a nice UK VPS for so long
[09:11]
btw, if you've never looked at webhostingtalk, check it out
providers will often post coupon codes in the advertising -> vps subforums and what not
no need to register.. i have an account I believe, but that's not the original intent I had when signing up years ago
er, meant to say its free to view/search w/o an account
people also post good/bad reviews of providers and ask questions and stuff
^ that was my original intent with the account
[09:17]
LTyeah.. already know about that thanks, but reviews for the smaller providers seem to be quite rare
anyhow, must be off
