mdmarco | does arp keep a local/private mirror of openbsd packages? | [12:36] |
nesta | I doubt that | [12:36] |
coil | never heard of one | [12:36] |
mdmarco | any trick to installing packages? pkg_add with $PKG_PATH -> No packages available in $PKG_PATH | [12:39] |
nesta | read the OpenBSD ports/packages section in the FAQ on the OpenBSD website
it's very simple | [12:42] |
mdmarco | i'm pretty comfortable with it | [12:43] |
nesta | cool, install your stuff then :) | [12:43] |
mdmarco | $ echo $PKG_PATH
http://ftp3.usa.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/4.7/packages/amd64/ $ sudo pkg_add python No packages available in the PKG_PATH Can't find python | [12:47] |
nesta | try
pkg_add -iv | [12:50] |
mdmarco | i did. no verbose | [12:50] |
nesta | see if it gives output, I rmember this issue myself
trying to recall yeh the FAQ is annoying on this one mh | [12:50] |
mdmarco | i can lynx(1) that url just fine | [12:51] |
nesta | yeh
ergh can't remember :/ | [12:51] |
mdmarco | and ftp(1) it just fine (the http://) changing to ftp:// it hangs | [12:52] |
nesta | try
um python-2.4.6p2 use the full name see if it does anything | [12:52] |
mdmarco | no dice
oh wait | [12:54] |
nesta | damn yeh I need to remember | [12:54] |
mdmarco | with the full url, it works | [12:54] |
nesta | yeh
lame | [12:54] |
mdmarco | i guess i am spoiled running -current everywhere else | [12:56] |
nesta | mh | [12:58] |

*** | schmir has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) | [13:14] |
mdmarco | nesta: fml. operator error. export $PKG_PATH vs export PKG_PATH | [13:20] |
*** | nakano is now known as nakano_ | [13:21] |
nesta | hehe mdmarco
you got it anyway? | [13:31] |
mdmarco | yea. works fine now | [13:34] |
nesta | awesome :) | [13:35] |
mdmarco | awesome would be packages via nfs heh | [13:36] |
nesta | unmanaged vps is what you bought :P
do any companies provide that sort of thing? | [13:36] |
mdmarco | true
what, packages over nfs? | [13:38] |
nesta | yeh | [13:39] |
mdmarco | i dunno. i do it at home
i like this vps tho. i'm pretty impressed | [13:39] |
nesta | ah okay
awesome :) they do rock | [13:39] |
mdmarco | i got mine as a failsafe really
i have a shell on a friend's box, but i'm trying to prevent the situation i'm in right now where i can't get to my stuff at home | [13:40] |
awyeah | I've been pretty happy with them as well. So far, no downtime except when I reboot for freebsd updates. | [13:41] |
mdmarco | i more or less block all ipv4 in, but ipv6 to a certain machine is ok
but, aiccu doesn't like reboots i guess, so i can't get back in so, once i get home, i'll setup an ipsec tunnel from home to the vps | [13:41] |
awyeah | Yeh
I'm also doing some VPNish stuff OpenVPN. My apartment's network is tunneled, and my parents' network is tunneled. | [13:43] |
mdmarco | so if i can't get home, i can get to the vps, then go over the tunnel. the tunnel will be over ipv4. ipv4 at home works, but, i block it. oops | [13:43] |
awyeah | So I can access my parents stuff from home as if it's on my network and vice-versa. Also I can access stuff on my network from the VPS as if it's local.
It's pretty neat to have those capabilities, eh? | [13:44] |
mdmarco | i *really* want to get a little alix box at my parents and my in-laws and have that setup tunnels between all of us so we can share stuff super easily
need funding tho ha | [13:44] |
awyeah | I'm using dd-wrt.
well, the VPS is the "concentrator" | [13:45] |
mdmarco | or maybe an armish box if we can get this port of openbsd going | [13:45] |
awyeah | but dd-wrt's got openvpn built into its vpn edition | [13:45] |
mdmarco | awyeah: how much traffic are you using every month for it? | [13:45] |
awyeah | Don't know yet, it hasn't been a month yet ;) | [13:45] |
mdmarco | heh | [13:45] |
awyeah | You know you can have them give you access to their cacti bandwidth monitoring softwaer
so you can check on your traffic | [13:46] |
mdmarco | i saw the link for that article but didn't click it | [13:46] |
awyeah | Just shoot an e-mail over to support@arpnetworks.com
Cause honestly, I don't think much traffic goes through the VPN stuff. | [13:46] |
mdmarco | but, that was part of the question behind packages over nfs. to save bandwidth | [13:46] |
awyeah | Also, this machine hosts web and DNS.
Don't forget though. Packages are usually fairly small and after the initial install, you won't be doing a lot. | [13:46] |
mdmarco | i know. i was just curious =) | [13:47] |
awyeah | yep | [13:47] |
mdmarco | at home, i have a perl -e in cron that pulls the stems of installed packages, and downloads any updated packages for them | [13:48] |
awyeah | Ah | [13:48] |
mdmarco | all of them go in one place, and i have $PKG_PATH pointing to nfs where they all are | [13:48] |
awyeah | makes sense
FreeBSD has a mechanism like that I can do "portupgrade -a" and then just sit back and watch | [13:48] |
mdmarco | obsd does too | [13:48] |
awyeah | oh, so you're just making it hard on yourself? :) | [13:49] |
mdmarco | i guess. heh. it's just a matter of setting $PKG_CACHE
but, i'd still need a way to get the stems of installed packages off each box everything at home is {amd64,i386}-current but 3 boxes are old. the 2 alix and a little one running on a 256m flash upgrading them is a hassle | [13:49] |
awyeah | yeh
well it's time for me to head home. i'll be back on later. | [14:04] |
