Wraithanup_the_irons: Put in the request for my ARP, with links to the ISO i'd like to have loaded into the CD [08:24]
cedwards: ping [08:36]
cedwardsWraithan: pong [08:37]
Wraithancedwards: since up_the_irons gave the go ahead, I was curious what wiki software you were planning on using it [08:37]
cedwardsI prefer dokuwiki [08:37]
Wraithans/it$/for it/
Don't they have funky syntax?
[08:37]
cedwardsI don't think so. supposed to be mostly compatible with mediawiki or moinmoin syntax. [08:38]
WraithanAh ok
Maybe it was a different one I was thinking about
[08:38]
cedwardshttp://www.dokuwiki.org/syntax [08:38]
WraithanYeah, looking at it now [08:39]
cedwardsI think it's pretty simple syntax, but I maintain four dokuwiki installations so I've spent a lot of time with it. [08:39]
WraithanLet me know when you put it up, I'd be interested in helping populate it [08:40]
cedwardssure [08:42]
WraithanHopefully I will be migrated to ARP soon [08:43]
cedwardsI'm watching The IT Crowd on streaming Netflix. Even though I've seen these episodes a dozen times, they still crack me up! [08:46]
WraithanNever seen it [08:47]
cedwardshilarious. normally I don't "get" a lot of British comedy, but this really appeals to geeks. [08:48]
WraithanSo British geeks are similar enough to us american geeks? [08:49]
cedwardsthis looks like it might have full episodes - http://www.sidereel.com/The_IT_Crowd [08:52]
RandalSchwartzit crwod is great
new series coming soon
[08:54]
cedwardsRandalSchwartz: I'm excited for season 4! [08:57]
RandalSchwartz"have you turned it off and on again?" [09:03]
cedwardsone of my favorites is the "Gay: A Gay Musical" episode. [09:05]
WraithanThat suggests there are straight musicals.. [09:12]
***ziyourenxiang has quit IRC (Quit: ziyourenxiang) [09:13]
cedwardsWraithan: you'll have to watch the episode to understand. It's hilarious. [09:15]
RandalSchwartzvery gay musical [09:15]
cedwardswell, assuming DNS has propagated, I give you http://arpwiki.com [09:27]
RandalSchwartzRandalSchwartz creates pingwiki.com [09:28]
cedwards..and bgpwiki and ospfwiki and.. [09:29]
RandalSchwartzI don't like that this isnot official
I don't think I'll contribute to it
[09:31]
WraithanRandalSchwartz: up_the_irons approved it, and if it ends up being useful and he has the time he plans on hosting it himself and making it official [09:34]
RandalSchwartzoh ok [09:35]
CESSMASTERwhat do we need a wiki for [09:35]
RandalSchwartzto keep from repeating the same stuff over and over here [09:36]
cedwards+1
RandalSchwartz: I understand your concern about it being "unofficial", which is why I waited for up_the_irons to give his feedback first.
I just think we've seen enough repeated questions that it'd be worthwhile for us to document them.
[09:37]
***prowl has joined #arpnetworks [09:38]

WraithanI have contributed. [09:46]
prowldear arpnetworks: is there anyway to 'reinstall' the default chrooted apache1.x in obsd ? [09:46]
WraithanWhat is there to 'reinstall' if you want a default config there are lots of examples across the net [09:47]
prowlo.o [09:47]
WraithanWait, apache1? [09:47]
prowlWell, looks like someone installed apache2 over what we had going on. I have missing files.. etc. [09:47]
WraithanPeople still use that? [09:47]
prowlit comes out of the box in openbsd 4.5, afaik [09:48]
WraithanWraithan isn't an *bsd user [09:48]
RandalSchwartzyou should be able to rebuild it from source
do you have an up to date /usr/src ?
[09:48]
prowlsure do. [09:49]
RandalSchwartzthe source is in there somewhere
you could start by blowing away the apache dirs just in case
[09:49]
WraithanI am looking foward to migrating [09:50]
prowl:/ [09:51]
WraithanWhat do you guys use for DNS... as I can't figure out namecheap's DNS stuff [09:54]
prowlfxdomains [09:57]
Nat_UBWraithan: Host your own, namecheap is ok but full-control is better :) [10:03]
WraithanI've never hosted my own DNS heh
I guess I could figure it out
[10:03]
Nat_UBSure...however for 1 or 2 domains, the registrar is a tad easier [10:04]
WraithanI can't figure out how to use my registrar's stuff to point at my server [10:04]
Nat_UBEverydns.net was the bomb...however they are part of DynDNS now [10:04]
WraithanIt seems my only options are to point at another name server, or if I select their hosted stuff, I don't see a why of setting my domain to point at my server [10:05]
Nat_UBAre they the nameservers you used?
Maybe you have to use their Free DNS, I don't see a DNS setup area either
[10:06]
RandalSchwartzI'm using afraid.org for my secondary DNS
so far, so good
[10:10]
cedwardsI host my own ns1, ns2 and ns3. [10:11]
jdoeWraithan: obsd forked apache forever ago. [10:13]
WraithanNat_UB: yeah looks like it is the FreeDNS stuff
I was using linode's before, I figured I should start the switch now for that sort of stuff, so it is just a matter of changing an IP when I get my server online
[10:15]
Nat_UBLinodes DNS takes forever... [10:17]
WraithanAgreed
If I host my own DNS do I just tell namecheap's DNS stuff my IP?
[10:17]
Nat_UBYou need to create a nameserver, where you tie the name to IP..
There is a separate section for that
[10:19]
Wraithanfuck me, I try to setup the DNS stuff on their free DNS stuff and it told me I can't put my domain on their free stff
blah
[10:27]
jdoeif you don't want to do it yourself and want something relatively quick/painless, zoneedit.com
heh
[10:33]
WraithanFinally found it
'All Host Records'
[10:35]
cedwardsWraithan: no experience with bind/tiny/etc? or just don't want to bother with it yourself? [10:35]
Wraithanis the name of the area you go to
what the fuck
cedwards: No experience with those, and I don't even know how I would point it at my server unless I can give a bare IP address for the name server stuff
[10:35]
cedwardsWraithan: I use BIND (I know it's not the favorite around here) for my "core" domain. that has ns1.domain.org, which has populated zone files.
Wraithan: when I register a domain someplace, I set the nameservers to ns1,ns2.domain.org, which then defines/provides the DNS information.
Wraithan: if you want to spend the time to learn, I'm happy to help. Although all I know well enough to teach in BIND.
[10:37]
WraithanThat doesn't make any sense to me, how to do set them to ns1.domain.org when ns1.domain.org is providing the DNS for domain.org ?
Well got the DNS working through their servers
http://www.lessthanthreesoftware.com/
wooo
for the record, I am not a sysadminy person... I know how to do the basics that is about it
[10:40]
cedwardsbest way to become a "sysadminy" person is to do ;) [10:46]
WraithanOr ask the sysadmin at work if I buy him a 6pack of good beer if he will do the hard stuff for me
lo
I may do that for the DNS stuff, buy him some beer to get him to teach me how to do it
[10:47]
bob^^i'd recommend buying a copy of DNS and BIND from o'reilly :)
(even if you don't intend to ultimately use bind, it's still a fantastic book)
[10:50]
cedwardsI would like to migrate away from BIND at somepoint, but it is what I have the most experience with so I generally default to it.
I'm also the DNS guy at work, and our setup is fairly complicated. At one point we had two masters and five slaves, plus forwards spread across three datacenters andin and out of DMZs.
I'm sure there are more complicated setups, but I've since slimmed it down. complication is rarely secure or manageable.
[10:51]
bob^^i do all our DNS in work too
use BIND for everything
though i'm looking at changing to something else for our recursive boxes
(isp)
that said we don't have any real problems with bind9
it's been great so far
[10:59]
cedwardsother than the constant stream of security issues and patches, it works great ;)
BIND is like the sendmail of the DNS world.
[11:04]

prowl uses slice/linode/arp and loves them all
[11:08]
bob^^jdoe: powerdns is the one i'm looking at :) [11:08]
jdoebob^^: I've used it for exactly that (isp, recursor) ... although I used it for the auth dns as well.
although split onto separate machines.
[11:09]
bob^^looks like a nice product [11:09]
jdoeyeah it's pretty good... the only real problem is the lack of a decent interface.
