cedwardswhat do the admins think about setting up a VPS wiki? I'm sure that'd be beneficial (and ease up the support requests). [09:19]
homosaurwiki wiki [09:20]
dxtrcedwards: Actually I think most people who get a vps here knows what they are doing .P [09:23]
RandalSchwartzit would be nice to share discoveries though [09:24]
aemthats what you think!
lol
[09:24]
RandalSchwartzother than by sitting in IRC [09:24]
aemI think its a great idea cedwards [09:24]
cedwardsdxtr: I think that is the idea, but we've had plenty of support requests and troubleshoot conversations.
dxtr: while it is aimed at skilled users, I think it'd be helpful to share common things we've seen so far.
[09:26]
dxtrcedwards: "Today I saw a tree" [09:26]
cedwardsyou know what i mean [09:27]
finkcedwards: i think it's a good idea
RandalSchwartz: i think i found out what was locking me out
[09:32]
RandalSchwartzwhat? [09:32]
finkon boot, member:openvpn starts after pf; my pf.conf refers to tun0, but pf can't find that interface, so it can't parse its config file, so i get this error: pfctl: Syntax error in config file: pf rules not loaded; which results in me being locked out after boot
-member
[09:33]
RandalSchwartzeww. that may be my situation too
so what's the workaround?
yeah - I refer to tun0 in my pf too
[09:34]
finkRandalSchwartz: just tried rc.conf's cloned_interfaces, that didn't work
i'm going to try /boot/loader.conf
[09:35]
dxtrSo... How's life guys?
And old man RandalSchwartz ofcourse
[09:36]
aemhehe
pretty good dxtr
[09:38]
dxtrNo plans of getting doomsday drunk or something tonight? [09:39]
RandalSchwartzHmm. I had no problem restarting pf with no tun0 device [09:40]
finkRandalSchwartz: maybe it's this pf rule of mine: `pass inet proto $int_proto from { lo, $localnet, $vpn_if } to any`
dmesg says: ,o IP address found for tun0:network, /etc/pf.conf:148: could not parse host specification
[09:43]
RandalSchwartzhmm. I don't have one of those [09:44]
finkthat should be "no"
RandalSchwartz: btw thanks for your help the other day
[09:44]
...... (idle for 25mn)
RandalSchwartz: got it! i wrapped the 'tun' in pf.conf with parentheses : ( tun ), or more specifically: ( $vpn_if )
fink celebrates
[10:09]
homosaurhey, i'm having trouble sending function keys to my server on VNC. i'm on a macbook. I know I must be messing up the key combos for function keys
anyone have an idea
[10:09]
finkhomosaur: what's your vpn client? [10:09]
cedwardsi haven't tried vnc on my mac, sorry. [10:09]
homosaurusing chicken of vnc [10:11]
RandalSchwartzaha - there ya go [10:12]
finkhomosaur: i had trouble with chicken too, which i like
try jollysfastvnc
[10:12]

homosaurfink: i could never figure out how to enter a password [11:13]
finkhomosaur: a password for what?
jolly allows you to paste as text into the vnc window
[11:13]
homosaurfink: the vnc server. there is a box for it on chicken [11:13]
finkhomosaur: it asks you for a password after you click connect
homosaur: it's ok, i have 'duh' moments too ;)
ok, it's outside time!
[11:14]
homosaurfink: i don't know then, it just isn't working
fink: oh i see, you have to activate the software
[11:16]
finkhomosaur: free activation [11:19]
homosaurfink: yep, it sure worked
dang, i really wish i could figure out what is going on with chicken. i sure would like to not have to pay $40 for a vnc client
oh i guess jollysfastvnc is optional pay. i guess i will use it for a couple of weeks and i'll send some cash if i find that i'm using it

cedwardsbroke down and just placed my order for my second machine. [13:39]
aemheheh
I was thinmking of getting an openbsd one
[13:40]
RandalSchwartz"you can't eat just one" :) [13:40]
cedwardsaem: I installed openbsd at work in my lab yesterday. Seemed to me like a less user-friendly version of freebsd.
..along with some odd security claims.
[13:43]
RandalSchwartztheo's paranoia helped me sleep at night for 8 years :)
but having made the jump recently to freebsd, I'm not looking back
[13:44]
aemcedwards: yeah but for some reason I like it ;-/ [13:45]
cedwardsI may continue to play with it in my lab, but I don't expect to move any production services to it.
this second one will likely replace my Debian stable Linode, putting all but my home mail server on FreeBSD.
[13:47]
DaCacedwards: but only openbsd has opensmtpd :) [13:57]

up_the_ironsmick_laptop: not really [16:40]
mick_laptopa friend that i recommended just bought one today, wanted to know if I could help him set it up today, or tomorrow
i think it takes ~1 day
[16:40]
up_the_ironsmick_laptop: yeah i'll most likely do all orders today / tonight; i slept a lot last night (sorry to those two had open support requests that I didn't get to), so I'll be up all night tonight working :) [16:46]
aemhey up_the_irons thanks for setting my PTR but I kinda messsed up, meant for it to be rip. in front of it.. whenever ya have a minute :) [16:54]

aemhow is ipv6 reverse dns done with arp? [17:27]
...... (idle for 26mn)
up_the_ironshttp://support.arpnetworks.com/faqs/main/reverse-dns [17:53]
aemyeah I read that
then I googled ipv6 reverse dns and read lots of pages
;-/
noob stylez
[18:03]
up_the_ironscedwards: regarding a wiki; i generally see it as another thing to have to maintain (spam, etc...), although I like the idea of sharing knowledge. i'm a little partial toward wiki's (in a bad way) b/c I've seen so many that suck. lots of un-curated information by people that can't write, is kinda worse than no info at all [18:09]
aem: ipv6 is a big subject :) [18:14]
aemhehe I bet
its pretty daunting to me alright :P
[18:15]
up_the_ironsi'm still reading RFCs on it... [18:15]
aemyeah I read the RFC :-(
will read again heh
[18:15]
up_the_irons: would I be using a tunnel broker? am I on the righ track? hehe [18:26]
RandalSchwartzyou don't need a tunnel broker
not for the VPS box
[18:28]
aemokay hmm
back to square one
damn
aem snaps fingers
[18:30]
amdprophetup_the_irons: we're going to beat you in the playoffs ;) [18:31]
RandalSchwartzthe vps box has ipv6 already allocated
the allocation is listed on your portal page
if you're running a nameserver, you can have the entire reverse delegated to you, or you can ask for just a few specific reverses.
in that sense it's just like v4.
RandalSchwartz wonders if any of that helped. )
[18:36]
aemah great [18:42]
***ziyourenxiang has joined #arpnetworks [18:42]
aemthank you
I wonder how many ipv6 reverse is acceptable
I will email and ask :)
cheers RandalSchwartz
[18:42]
RandalSchwartzRandalSchwartz bows
RandalSchwartz hits head on desk
ouch!
well - if you're gonna do more than a few, you should just man-up and take the delegation. :)
[18:43]
aemyes that means learning how to run a DNS server right? (fear)
lol
[18:44]
RandalSchwartzit's not that hard
the tricky part is finding a willing secondary
[18:44]
aemsomeone told me that I can run dns from my own vps for myself, but thats rubbish right? it must be a seperate machine eh? [18:45]
ziyourenxiangno & no [18:47]
up_the_ironsamdprophet: :) [18:47]
amdprophet:P [18:47]
up_the_ironsaem: no tunnel broker needed on the vps [18:47]
homosaurhey guys, i'm new with dealing with mail and i wanted to know what is the least amount of software i can run to send mails out from the server. i do not need to receive mail at this server [18:47]
RandalSchwartzthe default sendmail will do that
but I'd put postfix on, just in case
more options, especially for throttling
[18:48]
up_the_ironsaem: you can run a dns server on the vps itself, but usually people do it on another box for increased reliability [18:48]
RandalSchwartzand you'll still need to find a geographically diverse secondary [18:49]
ziyourenxiangup_the_irons, you make it sound as if the vps is not reliable :-) [18:49]
homosaurRandalSchwartz: postfix, gotcha. that's what i figured i should use [18:49]
up_the_ironsziyourenxiang: i know, i was afraid it might sound that way ;) [18:49]
aemok
cheers for the info guys

cedwardshomosaur: If you just want outbound email from the server(s) for things like reports I stick with regular, default sendmail.
homosaur: if you're going to allow connections from the outside world, postfix is much better.
[19:51]
finkpostfix wins on security [19:51]
cedwardsdefinitely. but if its just bound to localhost so the machine can report to you, I don't worry about it. [19:53]
