***: [FBI] has joined #syminet syminet: you're right up_the_irons: syminet: ah cool syminet: is logger your bot? ;-) up_the_irons: [FBI] is my logger btw ;)
yup!
it's new, that url it just printed won't work yet ***: syminet is now known as mark_
mark_ is now known as syminet syminet: that must have made you so grateful! ehehe up_the_irons: syminet: believe me it did ;) syminet: but check it out so I goto the back to plug in the cart... and on the back of the server in these little plastic clamps I notice ... a little star wrench!
grateful x2! up_the_irons: syminet: hahaha nice! syminet: mode/syminet [+e] by services.
..ok so my nick is regged. ty for the help there. :-) up_the_irons: ah there ya go, channel is registered
np at all
s/channel/nick/ syminet: so then the other one ... this is part my ignorance here up_the_irons: syminet: i also hadn't used IRC in years before i worked at Revver a few years ago. the CTO there made everyone use it for comm. now I use it for everything syminet: i used to be on irc *all the time* back in the mid-late 90's
quit around 2002. It's kinda l33t tho, considering AIM and all that up_the_irons: it's great for groups, scrollback, useful bots, etc... -: syminet nods syminet: when I first started it was all free accounts and guys would run bots and rename the binaries to things like 'ls' and shit so ps aux and top would look ok.
until you see that this guys 'ls' has had the same fucken pid for like, 5 hours. =P
...yeah that was it, eggdrop. they would rename that. wow... talk about a blast from the past. :-) up_the_irons: yup! syminet: irc is so cool that way. It's like the unix of the chatworld or something. :-) up_the_irons: definitely syminet: So what about you? If you're nearly out of space... what next? up_the_irons: i'm not really out of space for my own stuff
it's just a little hard to sell the space in my carrier cab to any joe off the street
so i generally say i'm out of space syminet: tell me about it ... sigh up_the_irons: but for people i know and trust, i got space syminet: right on up_the_irons: my next thing is to (hopefully) fill up the remaining space with virtualization servers
and once that is filled, it'll generate enough revenue to expand my cage syminet: right up_the_irons: so i'd pop in cabinet #4, and just keep going
at which point it may be easier to sell colo out of syminet: i guess i'll see it soon enough. three cabs per cage? up_the_irons: but honestly, colo is really not an attractive business anymore
i like *big* roomy cabs, so I could only get 3 in my cage, yeah (at its current size) syminet: i agree - i have only two colo customers and have to deal with unexpected shit like star screwdrivers. up_the_irons: like I told Dima, I do "friends and family" colo.. as in, if I know you and you're cool, let's rock and roll. But otherwise, it's not really worth it syminet: fact is, you've been there done that with all the shared BS, etc., ad infinitum up_the_irons: too many unexpected problems, yeah
and jeez, the margins blow, and i mean BLOW syminet: amen to that up_the_irons: ppl don't understand the cost of power, cabinets, strips, cables, etc.. etc..
why bill $100 when it costs you $90? there are easier ways to make $10 ;) syminet: its google and facebook ... free everything, right?
yahoo mail...
all the flaky assholes who promise "unlimited bandwidth and domains" for $6/month... up_the_irons: yeah, like you've probably seen in my FB/Twitter updates, Google can really do damage
if Google decides to compete w/ EC2 and give away free VMs, I gotta look for another business model ;) syminet: right up_the_irons: cuz at that point I can kiss my VPS biz goodbye syminet: but how the fuck are they affording all this? their ads CANNOT be supporting the kind of infrastructure they have. up_the_irons: InMotion Hosting, a good company (you've probably met Todd), gives like 200GB of disk space for like $10 or something.. that's crazy, i don't wanna compete with that ;)
syminet: why not? their ads make a metric f*ck ton of money syminet: they do but not that much? I advertised with them, didn't pay much and got not a single lead (3 years ago, keywords: "Debian dedicated servers server")
gmail, google apps... no way man. up_the_irons: but man, some search terms are like $30 per click syminet: Never met Todd - is he the one who bought the corpcolo cage? up_the_irons: yup syminet: The blonde guy - OK yeah I've seen him but he looked busy so I didn't bother him. up_the_irons: that's him syminet: cool up_the_irons: syminet: btw, do u have dual power supplies in the server u wanna colo with me?
(deciding which power strip to put you on) syminet: no. that would cost like, money and stuff. ;-) up_the_irons: hahaha
ok syminet: Of course, my PDU's were setup for that... I mean it was two plugs.
on the same circuit. =P up_the_irons: so dumb ;) syminet: You should see their catalog. "We run 911 centers!" up_the_irons: jesus syminet: http://www.digitalloggers.com/
Military radio recorder! up_the_irons: haha
syminet: how many IPs are u gonna need?
i'm writing up your service order syminet: ok remembering... i think i went to rma one and the guy who called me had such a thick chinese accent i could barely understand. up_the_irons: jee
*jeez
1 IP subnet (/30) is included; additional are 50 cents per IP
you'll get a free IPv6 /48 block too :) syminet: eheheehehe amen to that.
how much if I do two with a single IP each? Any diff in price?
btw I was thinking of emailing Robert Cresswell and asking him if he might be interested in sharing a cab, so we can *properly* share power. =P
I told him you're starting in the space business and he got your email from me after that. up_the_irons: syminet: IPs are independent of the servers, so if you need 2 IPs, it'd bump you up to a 8 IP block (/30 = 4 IPs, 1 usable, /29 = 8 IPs, 5 usable)
syminet: haha, funny :) syminet: understood.
hahah
basically 2U then + an 8IP block. The 1U @ $79 is done but I'm considering my phone systems and/or a personal server.
If I have another backup nameserver with you, /
then my phone systems could be hosted on it but better to put this into its own place, too. up_the_irons: syminet: oh, hehe, i'm already done writing it up for 1U ;)
just sent it out syminet: no worries up_the_irons: if u want to start right away with 2U, no problem, just let me know and i'll amend it syminet: amend plz up_the_irons: ok -: up_the_irons fiddles
syminet understands ... sry up_the_irons: np
oh, i actually had the due at signing wrong anyway on the first one... syminet: so we averted unnecessary extras ... excellent! :-) up_the_irons: syminet: with 2 servers, i'll give ya 2 switch ports, but in the future know beyond that and you'd need your own switch
syminet: LOL, it was wrong in your favor ;) syminet: can I take it back?
;-)
ok. Aaron suggested a 3550 series? I believe. Bang for the buck. up_the_irons: syminet: revised sent
3550 is good, yeah
it really depends if u need Gig ports
lots of the Cisco 10/100 high density switches are dirt cheap (and good) b/c they have very few GigE ports syminet: but take e.g. mysql replicated situation - the switch needs GigE locally, but internetbound is different. up_the_irons: correct
so you try to get a good 48 port 10/100/1000 switch, even just for internal communication, and the price really gets up there syminet: charged for anything going out of the outhouse. :-) up_the_irons: hehe
syminet: btw, are you getting some use out of the /24 block i gave ya a while back? syminet: LAX01 ... ehehe up_the_irons: hehe syminet: I am using them, but will not just run up to a customer and say "IP Change!" ... that's increasingly a bad thing to do. up_the_irons: syminet: right syminet: so we take it more carefully. I'm trying to decide if it should be the firetruck, or the paramedics.
:-) up_the_irons: syminet: yeah, well, in general no need to renumber at all; just put new customers on it
syminet: hah, got it working: http://irclogger.arpnetworks.com syminet: it's working perfectly here.
geez.. so what am I going to do when I'm acting like a drunken idiot? :-)
and new customers will be on it - but I tend to stress dedicated.
btw Dima is a supercool person! I think I pissed him off with a deal I had with ticketmaster. up_the_irons: syminet: feel free to /kick [FBI] whenever you want (actually if you just tell him "off", he'll leave), it's mainly just me playing around with the bot..
syminet: yeah Dima is cool.. but why'd a TM deal piss him off? syminet: He was right! Those guys are a problem and no one should deal with them.
It's an interesting deal. Dima is like, a soulful purist. And I respect that totally. up_the_irons: yeah he's very much a purist syminet: But I had to get those IP's in order to pay for their servers (6 machines) ... up_the_irons: ticketmaster is a shady company, so i'm not surprised syminet: I knew it was a (very) dark grey thing, but corpcolo got me some blocks.
I knew if I could keep them for say, 6 months - I could pay for their servers
(the new ones I bought for them)
ticketmaster is a joke! anyway... up_the_irons: you had to get new blocks just for ticketmaster? syminet: this was 2-3 years ago but I got a couple blocks. up_the_irons: were they big? syminet: they did pay for the servers, anyway.
And they left. up_the_irons: at least u got the server cost back syminet: And I sold them to better people.
right. up_the_irons: nice
syminet: what kinda servers are u buying these days? i remember years ago u had those super low power ones syminet: same up_the_irons: wow
cool syminet: but they are supermicro (I don't build each one myself anymore) up_the_irons: i like supermicro; my 2 latest servers are pretty beefy supermicro's syminet: I think it's good to go with a company that understands what you are trying to say. :-) up_the_irons: hahaha syminet: hrmm .. brb up_the_irons: k ***: [FBI] starts logging #syminet at Sat Aug 01 03:21:59 2009
[FBI] has joined #syminet up_the_irons: cool, got [FBI] in runit, so it is supervised syminet: I remember once we piped MegaHAL into channels
It was hysterical up_the_irons: oh nice
i should run a megahal bot syminet: I have your agreement - but would like to sign it electronically and/or is there a web-place to provide billing details?
an https place? up_the_irons: syminet: you remember the portal? https://portal.arpnetworks.com
unfortunately, there is no place to enter billing info there syminet: I do up_the_irons: syminet: do you have my GPG pub key? you can just encrypt it and email it to me syminet: no
I understand the principle but the details have escaped (via trying to verify almost anoyone in mutt - it always fails!)
*anyone up_the_irons: syminet: don't worry about it if it is a pain
we'll see each other in person, you can just gimme the billing info then syminet: no worries - check your inbox. -: up_the_irons checks up_the_irons: syminet: that works, u r brave :) syminet: i know.
its to you, i hope i don't regret it plz. ;-)
delete it!
:-)
brb (my neighbor just got home with like 6 girls) up_the_irons: syminet: i'm just worried about all the networks that email traversed before it got to me (unencrypted) ;)
omg syminet: You're completely right.
argh
I'll watch that card daily
hrm brb up_the_irons: hehe
take yer time (6 girls, yowza) syminet: its 3. I'm totally serious man I live on Main St. HB.
bah - I've been drinking too much too (as usual) - I'm so sharded.
But what you sent Subject: Revised earlier is definitely a go. up_the_irons: syminet: ah cool
syminet: next week is a real busy week for me, so we'll see about setting up then. perhaps next weekend or early the following week syminet: sounds good. up_the_irons: cool! syminet: let me know when it went through OK ... so I can call the bank to cancel the card. ;-) up_the_irons: haha
syminet: u have rails for the servers, yes? syminet: not yet. I don't know enough about it to sell it.
It would be dishonest to sell it if I didn't really know what I was doing. up_the_irons: syminet: the rackmount rails?
:) syminet: oh! uhm you meant not the ruby-type
Yes - I have plenty. up_the_irons: yep
ok great
cuz i don't do shelves
;) syminet: you did with me tho baby. ;-) up_the_irons: hahah
yeah but now i make the rules ;) syminet: can we rail one, then not rail (use a board) - this has proven really helpful here.
so we rail each other one
if not, no probs. up_the_irons: sorry, but we gotta rail everything so it is secure syminet: np up_the_irons: i have like 1 unrailed server and i'm gonna take it out syminet: so no more boards from home depot measured to size? :-D up_the_irons: syminet: nope ;) syminet: I mean hey ... it woerkz!!! up_the_irons: i had to use books last time, but that cuz freakin CorpColo lost the rails to one box of mine that they moved, and I *specifically* told them to put the rails in my cabinet. I made very clearn instructions, that was like #1. and of course, they dropped the ball...
pisses me off syminet: I bought like, a CD-plugin (5" box) and found it was nearly the width - and so I could shove pamphelts and motherboard manuals along the top and it worked!
WELCOME TO THE ENTERPIRISE
*ENTERPRISE
brb up_the_irons: haha syminet: it shouldn't be this way. ever. people call me anal but you *really* need to make sure.
I also bought a special 10" monitor - put it in my cab with a keyboard. One night I came in to work... and it was gone.
Victor was totally cool about it - gave me the combo to the cage - but that cage has since been sold. up_the_irons: syminet: they took your monitor out of your cab? syminet: no way to prove that - I dont think it was intentional.
possible i was dumb enough to leave it on the floor. its ok i let it go.
i put it in there for obvious reasons tho ... !! so i would have it as opposed to making sure i had something in the trunk at all times. up_the_irons: right syminet: less worrying... up_the_irons: best to take care of it yourself and not worry syminet: the guy with me was like, "I thought this was a secure facility?"
(customer) up_the_irons: LOL syminet: talk about backpedaling ... argh up_the_irons: hehe -: up_the_irons is hungry up_the_irons: cd $kitchen syminet: cat $food >> kitchen
