when people showed him that even if you submitted bug fixes for things like heartbleed they never got pulled in
and trying to remove ancient code like the win16 compatibility you would be shuned
or they saw a well written patch and decided to deploy their own faulty one
most of openSSLs problem was the management for it was just 2 or 3 people
