up_the_irons | anyone here with an X1 Carbon laptop? thinking of getting a used one...
or an X390 (which is new) brycec: lol that view is only half! seems I have a lot of backlog to catch up on... | [16:58] |
mhoran | Yes.
I have two X1 Carbons and a T480s. X1 Carbon is great. I needed a bit more RAM and so I went with the T480s, which is the same size as my old X1 Carbon. Just don't get the 2nd gen with the terrible touchbar. | [17:00] |
mike-burns | +1 to all of that.
Like mhoran said, know what you're getting into: the T-series is a more powerful laptop, and the T...s is just-slightly-larger than a Carbon (just barely). But the X1 Carbon I have is great. | [17:02] |
up_the_irons | I've been on the T-series for quite some time
but I want to travel with something lighter yet not have a small screen | [17:04] |
mhoran | Well the T...s is smaller.
14" screen. Just like the X1. But yeah X1 is great. | [17:04] |
up_the_irons | all the 14" screen models, that I've seen, had low contrast ratio on the displays (which I tend to be picky about) | [17:05] |
mhoran | But there's no discernable size diff between my X1 and T480s. | [17:05] |
up_the_irons | what about weight? | [17:05] |
mhoran | This screen is ridiculously good.
Same weight. | [17:05] |
up_the_irons | ah
there's some X1 carbon's on ebay for only a few hundred bucks | [17:05] |
mhoran | The newer X1 is lighter than the newest T480s, but I'm comparing a two year old X1 with a one year old T480s.
Yeah they don't hold value well haha. | [17:05] |
up_the_irons | lol no technology does | [17:06] |
mhoran | I think Macs do a bit at least. | [17:06] |
up_the_irons | OK I'm going to look at the T480s too
what's the max memory on the X1 vs T480 ? | [17:06] |
mhoran | I think the newset X1 can have 24 and I have 24. Or maybe X1 max is 16? | [17:07] |
up_the_irons | Ah OK
16 is enough for me wow the T480s has a 700:1 contrast ratio screen; that's really good | [17:11] |
mhoran | Yeah it's really nice. | [17:11] |
up_the_irons | X1 Carbon weight starts slightly less. 2.49 lb vs. 2.9 lb (T480s)
a bit less than 1/2 a pound | [17:16] |
....... (idle for 30mn)
5th and 6th gen X1's are still pricey used
but 4th gen, still with a 700:1 CR screen, is better might be the sweet spot | [17:46]

mnathani | I have an X1 Carbon from work. It is awesome. Wish I had more RAM though
The docking station rocks. One USB type C and you are good to go - dual monitor, ethernet, multiple USB and Power all taken care of | [20:07] |
......................................... (idle for 3h20mn)
mhoran | Yeah -- I hate that you have to get a "docking station" to get all the things in a USB-C, vs. the plethora of USB-C dongles out there. The dongles can't do 4k@60p over the USB-C but the $300 docking station can. :( | [23:27] |
