incin has joined #arpnetworks up_the_irons: anyone here use Slack? mike-burns: I do, at work. up_the_irons: channel poll: any interest if we had a public Slack channel? We have a private one for ops'y stuff... I've been using Slack for a while for various other projects, but I'm not a power user
the main reason I like it is because notifications
weechat-android is good, but drains my battery, so I tend to leave it off mike-burns: I wouldn't join a Slack group unless I had to. up_the_irons: roger that mike-burns: But there's possibly a large group of people who feel that way about IRC and aren't even in here to voice that. brycec: Can Slack be bridged with IRC? mercutio: there are slack/discord bots
so i suspect so mike-burns: There's a weeslack plugin for weechat.
And there is an official IRC bridge that everyone tries for a bit. mercutio: oh?
did it work well?
how have you found using slack in a work context mike-burns ? mike-burns: I like using Slack at work because there's a 0% chance I'll open it outside of work, which helps enforce a work/life balance. mercutio: haha mike-burns: (I, uh, really dislike using Slack.) up_the_irons: haha mercutio: speaking of bots, a bot in here could be nice brycec: BryceBot: o/ BryceBot: o mike-burns: Maybe a bot that sends a notification to up_the_irons when someone says his nick -- this could help with his battery issue? mercutio: one that can kick that thing that comes in fIorz: sounds more like the job for a client script or possibly a bouncer? mike-burns: Oh true. https://weechat.org/scripts/stable/tag/notify/ mercutio: there are a lot mike-burns: push*.* seem to be the mobile device ones. mercutio: what is libnotify? mike-burns: I think that's GONME?
GNOME mercutio: the mac notification thing seemed more popular
hmm pushsafer may be good? mike-burns: I don't see their pricing. mercutio: that's what i'm trying to find :) mike-burns: Same with Notify My Android. mercutio: 1000 additional API calls0.99 EUR (0.99 EUR / 1000 API Calls)
https://www.pushsafer.com/en/faq#answer2 mike-burns: Aha nice sleuthing.
That's not bad. mercutio: yeah it's cheaper if you buy more
but seems reasonably affordable
i suspect that something free will have terrible mobile clients fIorz: it's funny how a fundamental functionality of the communications network has been monopolized, isn't it? mercutio: yeah actually there really should be something free that is good enough mike-burns: Maybe Pushjet is free but you have to host it yourself? And I do know a good host ... fIorz: hehe :-) mercutio: More clients are under development; Web, Linux (GTK), Windows and OS X.
so it's android only atm
and i don't see an apple one
but it's bsd licensed.. mike-burns: Maybe someone else has made an iOS one. mercutio: i don't use ios mike-burns: Nor do I. mercutio: but it might hurt adoption a little BryceBot: That's what she said!! up_the_irons: BryceBot: no BryceBot: Oh, okay... I'm sorry. 'but it might hurt adoption a little' fIorz: I think on iOS you can't because apps just get terminated in the background when RAM is tight or something? mercutio: they even host the website on github up_the_irons: a bot to send notifications is an idea, but then the question is, *how* does that thing to do it? i'd like a push notification to my phone. but yeah, you guys are already looking at the push related services mike-burns: I don't see a third-party iOS implementation on GH, either. Oh well. mercutio: up_the_irons: yeh this one is free even mike-burns: up_the_irons: Android or iOS? mercutio: i'm still trying to figure out how to run the server... up_the_irons: mike-burns: android mercutio: the weechat side i think is easy
but this has multiple uses... mike-burns: A+. mercutio: you could notify all kinds of things :) up_the_irons: mercutio: which one are you looking at? mercutio: pushjet up_the_irons: ah mercutio: https://github.com/Pushjet/Pushjet-Server-Api.git
think this is the server mike-burns: But you might need the connectors and server-broker?
Very unclear how this fits. Maybe there are docs ... up_the_irons: hmm pushjet seems kinda cool mercutio: yeah i can't find good docs fIorz: is that using its own protocol, or just an interface to google's push service? up_the_irons: it uses GCM (google cloud messaging) mercutio: i wonder if this is too alpha fIorz: because then I think you have to pay google for access? up_the_irons: seems a little alpha yeah mike-burns: I thought GCM is free. fIorz: is it? -: mike-burns shrugs
fIorz shrugs, too mercutio: https://onesignal.com/
is this free? mike-burns: > Latest commit 7ddb7df on Oct 21, 2016 mercutio: yaeh i think it's not stable enough
err established enough mike-burns: I don't understand why OneSignal is "100% Free". mercutio: support contracts
for heavy users i think
https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/15/onesignal-series-a/ mike-burns: OK that makes sense. mercutio: it’s free for customers if they’re willing to share their interest and transaction data with large brands and advertisers, who can then use that data for better targeting. From a privacy perspective, Deglin said it’s similar to sharing user data with an ad network. mike-burns: oh. fIorz: another option would be just use SMS? :-) mercutio: you still need sms gateway
and then you pay per sms mike-burns: Email->SMS fIorz: well, sure, it's not free, but at least it's not a monopoly mercutio: idk, the current tech should allow to message without sms
also i reckon it's better if can respond too :) mike-burns: He just needs to know that he should open weechat-android.
This is what Yo is for!
http://www.justyo.co/ mercutio: https://airnotifier.github.io/ fIorz: and in principle, you only need a mobile phone, in which case you in principle even could support responses via SMS ;-) mercutio: am i missing something with this? mike-burns: Anyway, many phone providers offer email->SMS gateways, e.g. 5551234567@txt.att.net sends a text message.
mercutio: that needs an app on the other end. fIorz: (well, and a SIM, obviously) mercutio: oh so it doesn't provide apps? mike-burns: Right yeah, it's used by app developers. mercutio: this is way harder than i thought it'd be :)
onesignal looked promising, but harvesting user data sounds Evil (TM) up_the_irons: yeah in theory i could just do email to SMS but it just feels crude mike-burns: If you're willing to spend 1EUR/mo, you could try the Pushsafer weechat plugin. up_the_irons: i recon we've spent more than 1EU/mo just talking about this mike-burns: Ha! mercutio: pushsafer was free for the first API calls too
well pushsafer looked interesting but i can't for the life of me figure out how to create a private key
it just shows blank where it should be
their built in notifier has the same issue :) ***: jpalmer has quit IRC (*.net *.split)
