[08:26] *** mjp_ has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 246 seconds) [08:32] *** mjp_ has joined #arpnetworks [17:41] so bitcoin, eh? [17:54] Yup. I've made back all my losses from the 1200 I spent on 1 BTC in whenever to now... and then some. [17:54] it was nearly $2000 the other day [17:54] now it's around $2100 [17:54] pretty crazy [17:55] i've started altcoin mining [17:55] making about $4 USD/day if i do it 24/7 [17:55] with a video card i bought in 2014.. [18:29] That's pretty good! [18:35] yeah it's good enough i am researching buying more cards and doing on linux :) [18:35] at least during winter [18:57] how much electricity does it use? [19:06] it's winter, so that doesn't really matter right now :) [19:06] but quite a lot... [19:06] enough that i can notice the room is warmer when i mine overnight [19:08] * mkb thinks it's summer... :) [19:08] well for you it is :) [19:09] Summer is a state of mind. [19:09] i'm still wearing shorts.. [19:09] and i haven't used a heater yet, but daily high has shifted to around 15c.. [19:09] https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Support-Graphics-03G-P4-6162-KR/dp/B01KU2CIIY [19:09] now if they can only figure out how to run an ac and mine bitcoins at the same time [19:10] my research suggests that this card may not be too bad under linux [19:10] maybe with the internet of things my thermostat will start mining bitcoins [19:10] not being very loud or using too much power, while still mining reasonably well. [19:11] the extracting heat problem is actually very interesting [19:11] a lot of the worlds power consumption is now used by data centres. [19:12] and with modern globalisation moving power consumption to colder parts of the world seasonally is starting to make more and more sense [19:14] traditionally you never turn your servers off [19:14] I wonder if people like amazon do [19:15] I guess maybe it would be too fragmented... but maybe they can migrate [19:15] with clusters that's changing [19:15] yeah [19:15] but right now what's been happening first is cores are turned off when not used [19:15] in typical numa server configurations one side of the host can be not used at all under moderate load [19:15] oh yeah apply all the laptop power management to servers [19:15] and more [19:15] and only start to use the second half as load increases [19:16] but yeah if you had a vmware cluster of 20 servers or such [19:16] you can have 16 servers running all of the time [19:16] and 4 that are spun up as needed [19:16] and their are systems etc to power on/off servers as needed [19:16] adn like say in the middle of the night you may be able to shut some down and spread across fewer [19:16] * mkb looks angrily at IPMI [19:17] of course that'd be using centralised storage [19:17] and the centralised storage will still be pretty power hungry [19:17] and the power companies negotiate with power-heavy industry to do the work at odd times to keep load so they don't have to bring plants on and offline [19:17] yeah [19:17] I wonder if they'll start or have started doing the same with datacenters [19:17] and hot water is the same frequently [19:17] well google were talking about shifting load in europe [19:18] i think tehy have a data centre in iceland or thereabouts [19:18] google is in a fight here in south carolina because they're using so muchwater [19:18] haha [19:18] we have water issues here too [19:18] by people bottling water of all things [19:18] we pay heaps more for water than people bottling [19:18] acutally i think california had water fights too? [19:18] it's interesting how that differs around the world [19:19] yeah [19:19] from farmers using way too much water [19:19] while everyone else was meant to conserve water [19:19] some places it's plentiful and nobody is concerned at all and in others there's huge fights over who's using it [19:19] when their conservation made hardly any difference compared to farmers that were farming water-intensive things [19:19] when for things like farming you can do it in a different location for different crops. [19:20] globalisation creates so many issues [19:20] but it makes some things work a lot better if everyone would stop fighting and embrace it [19:20] and our farmers get to deal with flooding [19:20] though supposedly we're in a drought too [19:20] instead of sticking trade tarrifs on and trying to stay local for inefficient things [19:20] subsidising inefficiency etc [19:20] droughts can cause flooding [19:20] as the ground becomes hard [19:21] this was a storm [19:21] if you get a months downpour in one day [19:21] with no rain before [19:21] ah right [19:21] the ground will be hard and won't drain nearly as well [19:21] whereas if it's spaced out it'll be soft and absorb more [19:21] also roads will become more oily and slippery when it hasn't rained in a long time [19:22] so you have to be extra careful about stopping distance, which no-one is. so you have to assume that everyone is crazy :) [19:22] i love/hate driving in the rain here [19:23] people get extra impatient, and drive quicker [19:23] heh [19:23] and like say someone is crossing the road, and you're stopped at lights, then someone behind is more likely to beep [22:12] *** qbit has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
