johnny-o: "how often are equipment failures" would be an amazing question to have a definitive answer for
presumably because you would likely have access to travel back and forth in time at will
***: gizmoguy has joined #arpnetworks
plett_: johnny-o: Or have a large enough set of hardware that you can make statistical conclusions from it, like Backblaze do with hard drive models
***: mkb has joined #arpnetworks
johnny-o: i still wouldn't consider that definitive

qbit: up_the_irons: any update on that thunder request i put in on thursday?
Lefty: same question here
up_the_irons: I didn't reply to your ticket?
and sometimes I have a hard time associating IRC nicks with your guys' tickets (in which I only see the email addresses), so you might need to remind me...
basically, we're sold out of Thunder until I can provision a new host, which I'm going to do today
qbit: up_the_irons: you didn't reply to the ticket, just fyi.
up_the_irons: qbit: can you PM me the link to the ticket. I want to see if my email got lost
-: up_the_irons reads scrollback
up_the_irons: mike-burns: mhoran qbit : I do not sing AC/DC to myself when Thunder is mentioned, but how I probably will haha
mike-burns: Thun-dah! Na na na na na NA na na.
qbit: :D
up_the_irons: johnny-o: thanks for your feedback on price; I find your perspective interesting
mercutio: jpalmer : I find your bcache discussion interesting too...
mkb: mhoran karstensrage : we had two hosts with over 2000 days uptime once.. we simply needed to retired them because they were getting old. but never a crash ;)
mkb: nice
up_the_irons: mike-burns: lol
About equipment failures, they happen. Not often, but they happen. Even on a bare metal dedicated, you need to keep that in mind. Part of the reason we developed Thunder was to help against bare metal dedi failures. Sometimes people have only 1 box or 1 hard drive. This is bad planning, but people do it. When that drive dies, or the PS on the box, then you're screwed.
mkb: not that there aren't a million other failure modes, but no dual power?
up_the_irons: it was just an example
we do have dual power on everything
-: brycec was about to ask the same thing re: dual-power (and I specifically avoided mentioning power failure in my minor diatribe earlier because I figured everything was dual-power)
brycec: At the risk of inciting a riot... You told me you were going to provision more hosts this weekend. :P
qbit: lol /me riots from riot

mercutio: i sense a storm is coming

brycec: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_bV_FGZbr0
mercutio: what game is that?
BryceBot: YouTube video: "There's a storm coming in The Terminator" by James Carter
brycec: I'm guessing https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14471/terminator-ccg
(Subject matches, cards look basically identical...)
Yep, http://kardkrazy.ecrater.com/p/18692143/terminator-ccg-theres-a-storm-coming
mercutio: apparently it's a rare card
i take it mike has the card?
mike-burns: I have a Google Image Search memorized that gets me an image for the card.
JC_Denton: saw ccg and initially thought about mtg
karstensrage: up_the_irons, what im mostly concerned about wrt to whichever, VPS or dedicated, is the idea that i cant have any say in the matter, its fine to reboot the server or w/e but i need to be prepared, like could you do it monday instead of saturday, and the saturday is with no warning
i dont probably care about the context of why the VPS needs to be rebooted, its more like w/e it is, can you PLEASE wait until monday
so like if you said, well you pay X for this server and we get reboot it randomly whenever we want
then what do i pay Y for so you dont do that
so that i can have that expectation, which I already have but am not getting from the VPS provider that im using
mercutio: karsten: i don't think that there have been any recent host failures, but if there are then if a reboot happens outside of a maintenance window it's usually uncontrolled
are you sure that it's not just your kernel or such causing a reboot?
brycec: karstensrage: As I mentioned before, ARP will announced will in advance of planned maintenance. That's your chance to ask them to reschedule. Anything uncontrolled or emergency, well... That's only ever going to be out of your control, no matter how much money you pay.
*well in advance
mercutio: also if you have a specific virtual machine that you're having issues with rather than a general question then sending support ticket is generally the best way to go
brycec: (Even if it's just "hey, why did my VM reboot on Saturday?" - Support can most likely check and see if it was a host or process issue)
***: Stan___ has joined #arpnetworks
Stan___: Hey guys, is anyone from support active? Sent 2 emails yesterday and didn't get a confirmation email, nor reply which is very un-you :)
brycec: That does sound un-them, especially the lack of the auto-reply
If you didn't get the autoreply, then /something/ technical went wrong. Did you double-check that you sent it to the correct address?
Stan___: Yeah, and the thing is, I've had it happen before. Seems to be the connection with Tenderapp
sent it to:
RP Networks Support <support@arpnetworks.com>
And both Emails I knew from Garry
Garry Dolley <gdolley+tickets@arpnetworks.com>,
Garry Dolley <gdolley@arpnetworks.com>
brycec: Stan___: And who's your mail relay? (what smtp server did you send through?) Given that mail is "outsourced" (to Tender) and out of ARP's direct control, I'm not sure how much they can do...
(but at least we can cover the basics)
Stan___: Gmail, we use Google apps for Business :)
I'll try from a regular Gmail account, one sec
brycec: (Okay I stand somewhat-corrected, MX record is ARP's - I have no idea how mail ends up at Tender, but I'm just a customer, not someone that knows the internals)
I use my GApps account all the time, never had an issue emailing ARP
Stan___: Just sent it from a regular @gmail, fingers crossed :)
I can ofcourse use http://support.arpnetworks.com/discussion/new as well, never did before
Wtf even creating one there doesn't work :-/
brycec: doesn't work == no autoreply?
If doesn't work == doesn't create a ticket on support.arpnetworks.com/discussion then that would be very weird.
Stan___: Not even that, it doesn't add the new 'discussion' as the system calls it, to the discussions overview
brycec: Did you get the "Your discussion was created successfully."
message when you clicked create?
Stan___: I think so, let me try again
brycec: Stan___: And did you look under "All" discussions, not just "Unread" (it will be "Read" because you just opened it)
Stan___: Yup, checked all :)
brycec: Crazy... Worked for me. https://www.dropbox.com/s/krbebr98qhu3x8s/screenshot_2017-05-15_14-23-49.png?dl=0
BryceBot: Dropbox photo: "https://www.dropbox.com/s/krbebr98qhu3x8s/screenshot_2017-05-15_14-23-49.png?dl=0"
Stan___: "Your discussion was created successfully. You may have to wait a few moments while your comment is being automatically moderated."
brycec: How did you end up in a moderation queue? Weird.
Stan___: I think I know why. It's a pretty extensive email (as I'm wont to do) with details on a new range we need to announce. It seems to trigger the 'Look, maybe these articles will help you' thing. Only after clicking "Go to my discussion" was it opened. However, if that happens with emails, it enters the void
brycec: The auto-suggest always comes up, no matter how irrelevant :p
But indeed, perhaps it's due to length.
Stan___: Does it? I don't know :D However it is listed now
Still no emails though
brycec: I can confirm that a "Your request has been received" email is sent/received when creating a "discussion" (per my email preferences, which I assume are the defaults)
(And that email too includes the irrelevant auto-suggestions)
Stan___: That moderation message is weird though... and usually I can get ahold of someone through the chat but that one's off(line) as well currently.
-: brycec just got a reply to his test discussion too
Stan___: Ah, yeah, me too
Sent a really small email and that one did get the confirmation email. Maybe it is the length who knows. Glad I rediscovered the support desk though :) Thanks for helping brycec!
brycec: np
up_the_irons: Perhaps something got flagged and the ticket is in the spam queue
Seen it happen before
karstensrage: we did not reboot any servers

JC_Denton: up_the_irons: what type of h/w raid is on the metal systems? (the $40/m addon)
brycec: "Hardware RAID (Max 4 HDs) for $40"
I'm *guessing* it's the LSI cards that have been seen on Twitter/Instagram
JC_Denton: that's my assumption as well :D

JC_Denton: yep...
up_the_irons: Either 3ware or LSI. But the LSIs we generally flash to IT mode and use in our Ceph cluster. So they provide no RAID functionality per-say
JC_Denton: ah
thunder sort of tempts me. sort of.

not to mention the migration headache
