Using the serial console? :P "I don't know how I would get to the console for that though."
RandalSchwartz: Yeah, I don't know anything about how to do that.
   brycec: ipmitool -I lanplus -L OPERATOR -H $IP -U calyptix -E sol activate 1

well, use your username too *oops*

Don't use mine, it probably won't work :p
RandalSchwartz: doesn't that have to be enabled in freebsd?

or is it always present when booting?
brycec: Configuring your OS is an exercise left to the reader.

i.e. I don't know what FreeBSD does, I run something else on my dedi.
RandalSchwartz: Yeah... I seem to recall that you have to do something during installation to enable the serial console

caseyandgina: Is there a way for me to rename my VPS's? Change the names to something more useful than e.g. caseyandgina-543bca?
***: awyeah is now known as awyeah-afk
mkb: in the portal somewhere you can set a service label I think it's called
caseyandgina: yeah, I did that, and it shows up after the other name and a comma.

but what is that other name? It's not the UUID...
mkb: I assume it's some internal identifier
caseyandgina: also when it comes to Service Names, it also adds a suffix only there - but how to change the seemingly hardcoded "Generic VM" or "Debian 8.0 VPS" strings?
mkb: I'm sure up_the_irons finds it useful for the identifiers to come with the customer name...

 email support@arpnetworks.com.
   caseyandgina: nah
mkb: I'm not sure what goes into that but I do know they are configured differently depending on the OS

so if you change the OS
caseyandgina: right, sure would be nice to be able to see what those parameters are, and control them directly, via the control panel.

it's a black box now. You try a generic VM set up yourself, vs. a Debian one blown away, and get different emulated hardware...but there's no direct way to control these settings.
