[11:41] Here's a salute to ARP for being up today. Amazon S3 is apparently having a major outage, and their status dashboard hasn't updated to reflect that because their status dashboard is affected by the outage. [11:42] ah, apparently I am late in saying this. The status page is working again; they're just having an outage. [11:57] sjackso: No, that really was a thing - they couldn't serve the red icons on the dashboard for a while because the image files were hosted on the broken bit of S3 https://twitter.com/awscloud/status/836656664635846656 [11:57] TWITTER: The dashboard not changing color is related to S3 issue. See the banner at the top of the dashboard for updates. (Tue Feb 28 19:17:47 +0000 2017, retweeted 1020 times) [11:58] plett: I know, but they had solved that problem by the time I wrote here [11:58] Still hilarious. Maybe they should host their status board on google cloud or something? [11:58] Ahh [11:59] Indeed. The irony is amazing :) [12:01] Perhaps. At the same time, their services aren't _supposed_ to break to this degree. That's why regions have availability zones, replicas etc. [12:02] Pretty mind-boggling that it broke at all, especially to this degree. [12:02] yes, the whole 11-nines of availability thing is looking tattered today [12:06] 11 nines I cannot even begin to fathom that [13:00] for such a major outage there weren't that many posts on outages@ [13:01] i didn't actually read the content, i just saw the subjects go past [13:44] i would be easy to brag that we have great uptime, in the face of big player outages, but at the end of the day, if we were the biggest host in the world, we might also have the same problems. Sometimes it's nice to be small. [13:50] 1) if facebook is down for 5 minutes, it should be "no big deal" [13:50] 2) if intrastructure requires external services there should be very close to 100% uptime [13:51] and more and more people seem to want to rely on external services rather than keeping things in house. and i think that software has to have better solutions for that than straight redundant infrastructure [13:51] I hesitate to gloat when a competitor/something I don't like suffers an outage, because that could easily be me someday. [13:52] some credit card systems will go into offline mode if their credit card processing goes down [13:52] but because offline means signature everything slows right down. [13:52] and places that resort to cash-only often have most people abort purchases here :) [13:54] but amazon the shop is trying to take the place of shops, and i dunno if amazon itself had an outage, but it's effectively the same as a retailer having their credit card processing stop [13:56] (There's a brick&mortar Amazon bookstore in my local mall. It feels a bit... ironic, I guess. But it's a real nice experience: perks of having a physical bookstore - browsing, skimming, etc - with Amazon pricing.) [14:02] there used to be a bookstore here, i think it was barnes and noble [14:02] and they had couches etc [14:02] it was like 3 storeys [14:02] but then they closed up [14:02] i preferred it in a way [14:03] the only problem was the prices were really high compared to amazon [14:03] and i think that it went into that problem area of people would sometimes browse there, then buy from amazon [14:03] the same thing is happening with shoe places here. [14:04] it's mitigated slightly from cheaper parallel imports from asia to get costs down. but people want convenience and cheap prices at the same time. [14:04] i kind of like the idea of decoupling, like you go to a shoe shop and you pay money to check out shoes, and to have someone help you, then you can buy online or there. [14:05] where they can offer more competitve prices becuase you've already paid for checking out the shoes. But after I receive the SYN/ACK packet from that remote server something else happens. [15:12] "Me", or my Kernel I suppose send out an "R" packet, my program didn't send it. Now this RST third packet is not needed for me. Is it neccessary to have Kernel send RST on its own (being TCP) link, or I can turn it off with "setsockopt"?
