caseyandgina | How about setting up a Slack team for ARP Networks? More clients will use it, and it's still accessible via IRC...
easier to stay connected to from a variety of devices, get offline messages, etc. | [11:50] |
mhoran | Thumbs down.
I'm sorry, but Slack is a terrbile experience for people who already have to be in multiple teams. Every time I have to join another slack team I cringe. Also, I don't see any benefit over IRC, especially given web IRC clients. | [11:55] |
mkb | irc is a lot easier to get into
don't you need an account for slack | [11:58] |
mercutio | i prefer discord to slack
discord is kind of gaming biased, but it has nice things like really good search although i think irc is fine for arp | [11:59] |
mhoran | Plus, having a fragmented (IRC vs Slack) chat experience would be a bummer. | [12:12] |
mike-burns | -1 Slack, +1 IRC, -1 to more than one communication band, but +1 to moving all of the communication to another band if up_the_irons thought it would increase sales or in some way improve the platform. | [12:20] |

sjackso | +1 for remaining in IRC, for what that's worth. Adding a low-volume freenode channel to life is easy, adding a slack team to life is obnoxious. | [13:18] |

caseyandgina | for those of us who use multiple slack teams already, I disagree, having to open a separate program for IRC, and losing whatever transcribed when disconnected, is more burdensome. I personally prefer IRC, but Slack is way more user-friendly and still works fine via IRC.
and well, I prefer the features of slack, like offline messages and basic formatting | [14:03] |
mercutio | i use tmux/weechat | [14:04] |
caseyandgina | I use both slack teams via IRC, and slack teams which themselves are an interface to a freenode IRC channel :P | [14:04] |
mercutio | and i just connect to my irc and everything is there | [14:04] |
caseyandgina | Foswiki does the latter approach
their IRC channel is accessible via Slack | [14:04] |
mercutio | slack has issues like unless you pay lots of money you ca't see old messages
they expire quickly | [14:05] |
caseyandgina | you can log messages yourself just like with IRC
not very quickly at all generally a couple months IRC doesn't give you ANY history, you have to log it yourself clientside | [14:05] |
mercutio | well it's logged for me :) | [14:06] |
caseyandgina | except what happens when your connection is interrupted | [14:06] |
mercutio | and #arpnetworks actually has web accessible history
it doesn't casey well at least not for long | [14:06] |
mkb | irc is nice because you don't have to worry about history
nobody expects that you can see stuff you didn't reply to (and they ask again if it's important) | [14:09] |

nathani | Lol @: The Swedish lyrics of Boten Anna tell the story of a female IRC user mistaken for an IRC bot by the vocalist who later finds out the truth; subsequently, however, he states that she will always remain a bot in his eyes. The song is based on an actual experience of Jonas Erik Altberg (a.k.a. Basshunter), who explained the situation in an interview with the Finnish website Stara.fi. His friend said
he would create a bot with administrative capabilities to keep order in his channel, #BassHunter.se; when this happened Jonas saw a new user with administrative capabilities named "Anna" enter the channel, and naturally thought this was the bot. Months later, he learned that Anna was actually not a bot, but was his friend's girlfriend; the embarrassment, he says, inspired him to create the song. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boten_Anna | [17:46] |
BryceBot | Boten Anna :: "Boten Anna" ("Anna the Bot") is a song by Swedish eurodance musician Basshunter, which appears on his first studio album, LOL . Due to the song, Basshunter became a noted artist in his native Sweden, as well as Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Israel and the Netherlands after the release of the single in 2006. The song topped hit charts and, on 3 May 2006, was named Norway's official Russ-song of the... | [17:46] |

caseyandgina | Hi, I added a new VPS to my account, but don't seem to have been allocated a new IP for it... | [23:49] |
mercutio | caseyandgina: submit a ticket? | [23:52] |
caseyandgina | I just did... | [23:52] |
mercutio | ahh | [23:52] |
caseyandgina | I guess the control panel interface is fairly limited way to add services...I can't add an IP block that way | [23:53] |
mercutio | yeah | [23:53] |
caseyandgina | for now I can just shut down my other VPS and use it's IP | [23:55] |
mercutio | you can do install with ipv6 | [23:55] |
caseyandgina | nah, learning ipv6 right now is over my head :P | [23:56] |
mercutio | ahh ok
yeah you could temporaily shut down the other one | [23:57] |
