nathani: you around?
trying to figure out how to put this Bell HH3000 ONT into passthrough mode
yup Im here
did you get your b1 number and password?
nathani: yeah I have it right here
Do I set the WAN mode to 'WAN Ethernet'?
what device do you want the public IP to land on?
dont need to change WAN mode
nathani: my Mikrotik router
hook up a port from one of the LAN connections over to WAN Port or Ether 1 on Mikrotik
yeah its connected that way now
open the gui / Mikrotik admin
get to interfaces
click the +
add a new pppoe client interface
Dial Out tab > put in the b1# and password
back to General Tab > select the interface hooked up to the Bell Modem / Router
you will need to configure NAT for the pppoe-out1 interface and your LAN / Bridge
nathani: just to be clear, am I supposed to have the ethernet cable in the red port marked as WAN or the yellow ports marked as LAN?
on the Bell device, LAN
and you dial out from behind that port even though it is giving you a private IP if you DHCP and have Internet connectivity
oh I see what you mean
you will be using 2 public IPs essentially
yeah
one for the BELL / NAT
and Wifi will be using that one as well
other for your Miktrotik
what model mikrotik?
mine maxed out at about 240mbits/sec so I can't use it in my network
CRS125-24G-1S-1RM
nice
dslreports.com had somone terminate the fiber directly onto CRS - if you are feeling adventurous and specifically since you have only Internet and no Phone or TV
nathani: problem is I can't get the fiber from the room where its at to the CRS
i would have to move the CRS
I don't get on with the CRS devices. I've tried to use them as switches and the vlan config is incomprehensible
I've got dozens of CCR boxes, they're great. And many dozens of virtual mikrotiks. It's just the switches I don't get
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgXHc0xCccw
YouTube video: "99 Problems but a switch aint one - cisco parody" by Kenny hicks
plett: yeah, RouterOS VLAN configuration is terrible to grok
staticsafe: It's fine on the CCRs. I make heavy uses of vlans and bridges on them
plett: im on of those people who buy a managed switch and use it like a dumb one
so I just need to switch and NAT atm
flat L2, no VLANs
I almost always need vlans when I'm using a switch
The most common use-case is a trunk port from a router to a switch containing 4 or 5 vlans, and the switch breaks them out onto different ports
And there's frequently special devices which need to be on multiple vlans
And some of the examples in http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:CRS_examples#VLAN are just WTF
staticsafe: ##mikrotik suggests you will get max 250 Mbps with your Mikrotik device
" mducharme | you might be able to offset that drop by using something like fasttrack"
Mikrotik's routers are a friendly UI on top of linux networking functionality. So if you understand things like iptables and brctl then they're awesome. The problem is that they've done the same with the switches - but you need to understand the underlying switch chip instruction set to make any sense of them
nathani: http://www.speedtest.net/result/5925053353 with fasttrack enabled
and you are on gigabit profile?
nathani: yeah
the installer verified that before we left
you are getting your upload so theres that
he*
I didnt test mine with Fasttrack
but wouldnt go over 250
how much more if you bypass the mikrotik?
nathani: http://www.speedtest.net/result/5924949073
my full speed, depending on the speedtest server
I dont think these speed test sites do justice to gigabit links
http://www.speedtest.net/result/5925070329
they don't yeah
probably should do a iperf test with a localish server
download a large linux ISO torrent
it will likely use most of your pipe
630 Mbps down, holy shit, nice
too bad it doesnt come with a static IP
i'd buy bandwidth from you if it did
lol
did I mention its unmetered?
it's probably banned for commercial use
yea they say no servers etc
lots of speedtest servers have 10 gig links now
any public iperf ones?
i dunno about iperf
i mean speedtest.net ones
iperf.he.net
lol
last i knew speedtest doesn't support > gbe clients though
