but the data center itself is loud so i can't generally tell

rackmount servers are generally annoyingly noisy nathani
Which is why you lock them away in other people's buildings and do everything possible via idrac/ipmi etc

Datacentre noise isn't loud enough to cause hearing damage

there's an odd zen factor to camping w/ a crash cart for hours on end, milk tea in hand, nothing but fan noise filling the air~

Yes, just bloody annoying
And remarkably fatiguing
yeah it's amazing how much difference it makes at the end when you have ear plugs
