hello im considering moving to freebsd from ubuntu im currently at linode and there are a quite a few mandatory migrations that i cant control so they take down my linodes and do something, then bring them back up does arpnetworks do similar things? what is a mandatory migration? 14:08:54 up 69 days, 14:02, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.05 this was provisioned 69 days ago they put my linode in a queue to be migrated i dont know why linode has had several critical xen maintenance things for older hosts this year isn't linode doing forced migrations from xen to kvm sort of forced more like strongly encouraged i do like linode dont get me wrong i dont like the forced migrations i dont like ubuntu anymore so im looking for a good alternative the way to get freebsd on linodes, seems hacky at best id rather have bsd native well, arp likes bsd a lot, apparently karstensrage: I've been through one host reboot at ARP since getting a VPS there in 2014. It's a good choice if you want to use bsd. i run ubuntu xenial lts on it, but everyone else here appears to be a bsd fan last i saw linode provides DNS too, does arp provide that? you mean forward dns? they host DNS if youre a customer so i can provide DNS records for my sites and they serve them karstensrage: You can configure reverse DNS for your IPs, but no, there's not a DNS service like Linode's. hmmm your domain registrar may have dns service though incidentally i've never hosted dns at the same hosting provider anywhere i usually have domain registered at one company, dns at one company, and hosting at another going to head out now, but if you're looking for a host karstensrage, can't go wrong with arp total of 1 ticket submitted in 3.5 years I've had no complaints with Arp for, um, 7 years? A long time. i don't think i've ever had an unintentional/unwanted reboot either my old dedicated was applying rebootless kernel updates with ksplice, 1000d+ uptime karstensrage: just set up your own nameserver? cloudflare do dns namecheap do dns i think too but i prefer running my own dns :) yeah, it's so much more flexible and it's automatically in your backup so many registrar's do DNS for free, it wasn't worth for us to develop our own *registrars karstensrage: ^^ hazardous: how did you find the stability of doing rebootless kernel updates with ksplice? it always fascinated me, but i've never tried it myself karstensrage: one of my own VMs here: $ uptime 15:48:55 up 1739 days, 13:10, 1 user, load average: 0.08, 0.02, 0.01 $ yeah yeah, bad for security, but... the longest running production host we have: $ uptime 15:43:14 up 2397 days, 9:55, 2 users, load average: 1.60, 1.76, 1.73 $ which is going to be retired soon... i feel bad... one of our resolvers: $ w 16:26:02 up 2116 days, 4:25, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00 $ wow, there's no load mnathani: how are you finding ZFS to be on your new VM? mercutio and I were debating on how well it would run with "low" RAM. I'd be curious to know how ZFS in a VM would work too I've done it, and it works fine, but you have to have enough RAM in my experience 4GB was good, but lately i've seen setups with smaller amounts i tried linux with 768mb zfs before and seemed to give worse performance yeah that sounds way too low well it seemed ok, but it was low enough to decrease disk performance up_the_irons, thats fantastic thanks sure are you part of arpnetworks or just happy customer? i'm the owner :) :) ok, good to know sorry my opinions are biased ;) yeah i imagine lol two DC's los angeles and germany are there plans for more? not at the moment, we have our hands full with 2 and we span two big markets with what we have I had an interesting request the other day, they wanted hosting specifically in Florida, because it is the closest latency-wise to south america (or so they said) linode has 6 dc's linode hosts at he.net for west coast hurricane electric right? but dallas, newark, singapore, where abouts are you? bay area then having 6 dc doesn't matter? ? well 10 msec vs 20msec latency probably isn't noticable im running a service customers all over oh do you distribute? its not for me yeah yeh from that point of view it's a bit more complicated. cdn is a lot simpler for a lot of applications i dont serve anything static up_the_irons: I'd still help you with an NYC DC! mhoran: I appreciate it :) up_the_irons: off topic, but you just accidentally made reference to a great film. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fMICrBHs34 (@40 seconds) YouTube video: "The Muppet Movie - El Sleezo Cafe (Extended Scene)" by StephenTheLoon wait how did i do that ;) I assume it was the mention of latency. /s i didn't watch it , too loud in starbucks I didn't either, didn't care. I know of the Muppets, and it seemed perfectly senseless that the Muppets would be discussing as specific and computer-y a topic as network latency. Hence the sarcasm/joke. oh /s is sarcasm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony_punctuation#Other_typography Irony punctuation :: Irony punctuation is any proposed form of notation used to denote irony or sarcasm in text. Written English lacks a standard way to mark irony, and several forms of punctuation have been proposed. Among the oldest and most frequently attested are the percontation point proposed by English printer Henry Denham in the 1580s, and the irony mark, used by Marcellin Jobard and French poet Alcanter de Brahm during the 19th century.. @ud /s /s: Indicates the presence of sarcasm. Example: "Man, I wish George Bush could take another 4 years, especially after his work on torture- who'd have thought such a fair and moral decision could have been made?\r/s" somehow in my mind i had just changed /s to /stupid sarcasm is the lowest form of wit :) make sense :) in the clip, a man is thrown bodily out of a sketchy tavern, complains about how awful it is, and when asked by Kermit "Why not complain to the owner?" growls in response "I am the owner." it's an imperfect reference, though, because we very rarely have bar fights here! I am a newbie when it comes to both freebsd and zfs, I managed to get zfs on root as the installer had an option and it was pretty easy. i wonder when ubuntu will add zfs root to installer maybe it has for the next release dne: nice
