It pauses, and then it goes to to the FreeBSD boot prompt ("F1 FreeBSD" or whatever), and then it understands what I'm typing.

I used an Android VNC client.
So now I have a tiny tiny screen and the worst of all keyboards. mercutio: but proof that it's your desktop having issues
you can use usb otg adapters on most phones btw
