mike-burnsThough see also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chink_in_one's_armor [01:29]
BryceBotChink in one's armor :: The idiom "chink in one's armor" refers to an area of vulnerability. It has traditionally been used to refer to a weak spot in a figurative suit of armor. The standard meaning is similar to that of Achilles' heel. Grammarist provides a sample usage by The Daily Telegraph that they find acceptable: "Such hype was anathema for the modest professional fighter, who has 22 victories under his belt, and not a perceptible chink. [01:29]
mercutioahh, so i wasn't being racist accidentally
it's just i was using a form that's not so common now.
googling suggests other people use "work out the chinks" together too.
and iron out the kinks
[01:38]
mike-burnsIt's a weird situation, linguistically: it's not historically offensive, but it now is.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversies_about_the_word_%22niggardly%22 - here's another example of the same situation.
[01:42]
BryceBotControversies about the word "niggardly" :: In the United States, there have been several controversies concerning the word "niggardly", an adjective meaning "stingy" or "miserly", because of its phonetic similarity to the racial slur "nigger". Etymologically the two words are unrelated. Word origins "Niggardly" (noun: "niggard") is an adjective meaning "stingy" or "miserly". It can be traced back at least to the Middle English word nigon, [01:42]
mike-burnsI'd avoid using it ... though I'd also avoid using "kink" to replace it because that word doesn't mean that. [01:43]
mercutiowhat would you say [01:44]
mike-burns"issues" [01:44]
mercutiosmooth out the abrasions? [01:45]
mike-burns"... often manage to streamline everything, work out the issues, or ..."
Yeah, smooth out abrasions seems nice, too.
[01:45]
mercutiowork out the issues seems to have negative conotations to my mind [01:46]
mike-burnsHm, maybe "rough edges" then?
"Abrasions" is nice, too.
[01:47]
mercutiorough edges makes it sound like everything is hacked together
if you're talking about any company you're doing work for and say that things are a bit rough around the edges and they're not a startup it's kind of painting them in a bad light.
[01:48]
mike-burnsTrue, true. [01:49]
mercutiojust like it's hard to take someone seriously when they say that he.net are into slavery. [01:49]
mike-burnsRight. [01:49]
mercutiothat said, it's okay for someone like I with no affiliation to say that he.net seem rough around the edges if they'd allow that DNS issue it happen.
the thing is DNS isn't their core service.
and it's like an addon of sorts. if cloudflare did the same thing i'd be much more disconcerted.

brycecI'm familiar with "chink in...armour" but I'd never use "chink" outside of that very specific idiom. [09:52]
sjacksoThe dict.org reponse for 'chink' is interesting
most of the definitions have obvious etymological connections except for the racist one
also, I got k-lined last night without much explanation and today I'm allowed back on freenode. Strange.

"yes, sir. we will roll a truck to install your version 6 server."
[14:55]
mercutiohahaha
they probably do
because who can plug in a router?
actually on that note, i notice that quite a few people here stick wireless base stations in non ideal places, which makes their wifi worse.

sjacksomercutio: what's non-ideal in this case? [15:45]
mercutiosjackso: at least here often wireless routers go in the kitchen
which is at one edge of the house, around multiple walls etc and can get signal degredation
although that might be partially from people having phones in kitchen, and dsl being common here
