ChanServ sets mode: +o mercutio jpalmer: opinion question: overhauling my resume. I like the way it's turning out, but at first glance, visually.. I'd like something that sets it apart from a million other black/white resumes. I've done my headings and such in a dark blue (almost, but not quite black, for a bit of a differene) but what do you guys think about possibly putting a small logo of the company next to each of the certs I've listed (I'm only listing relevant certs, and
My assumption is, *if* that was a good idea, everyone would be doing it, instead of the plain black/white resumes you see all over the place. but, thought I'd solicit thoughts from you guys :) mercutio: i think for marketing roles it's more important for presentation
for tech roles a lot of them just seem to look for keywords jpalmer: agreed wrt marketing, but this is for a strictly technical role mercutio: of course it depends where you're applying jpalmer: yes, I'd definitely have a "no logos" version as well for the more.. traditional places. mercutio: i talked to a recruiter one time that seemed to think tech people were impossible to deal with jpalmer: (which ironically, are the places I'm least interested in going to. lol) mercutio: but there's quite a lot of technical focused recruiters
and they may be better for giving a broad opinion
it doesn't seem that uncommon for technical roles to have quite boring looking cv's jpalmer: honestly, I've lost any/all faith in "technical recruiters" if I never speak to another one the rest of my life.. I'd be cool with that. mercutio: and i think that's partially not being that interested in being glamorours
glamorous
heh jpalmer: sure, I get that. boring cv's/resumes are the norm. "tech people aren't creative" and all that. mercutio: what kinds of roles are you looking to apply for? jpalmer: meh, I'll probably just leave well enough alone. mercutio: and do you generally get interviews when you apply? jpalmer: honestly, I'm not een looking. it's just an excercise I go through yearly. mercutio: i've heard of people here finding one or two people without mcse
and then deciding they're the interesting looking ones
:) jpalmer: I do, I actually get a pretty decent rate of phone calls/interviews when I do. mercutio: if you get phone call / interview then yeh, you probably don't need to stick out further in your resume jpalmer: as for the types of roles, I enjoy doing things at scale. so tools like puppet/ansible/jenkins, haproxy, maxscale, etc.. those are the tools I am using and would like to continue using. maybe not those specific tools, but that.. genre. mercutio: yeah that should be easy to get a job with jpalmer: what started me down this path: I've been working for the last 6 years with linux. prior to that, I was a nearly 20 year BSD admin. I happened across a handful of job postings for BSD people.. and.. thought about floating my resume to a couple of them.
would love to get back to the BSD world. but as I said, not unhappy with the linux world. heh mercutio: netflix? :)
i don't really know what bsd jobs are aroudn these days jpalmer: nah, I'm not into the big mega companies.
netflix/amazon/google etc are not interesting to me.
I like smaller companies, smaller teams where I get to touch a lot of things.. not silod/pigeonholed into whatever my teams responsibilities are. mercutio: Yeah same
They use free BSD though jpalmer: yea
I just hate hearing things like "yeah, thats the networking teams problem though. lets focus on our doohickey" and similar stuff. give me a company with 50-500 people, anytime. mercutio: The biggest concern I have heard about BSD is finding more people who know it if the existing leave
A lot of people seem to believe in domain related experience
50 is huge to me jpalmer: while somewhat valid, the reality is most of the unixes are similar enough that.. once you figure out it's package management, and admin quirks.. they're really all about the same. mercutio: I know
Employers and managers don't always know jpalmer: "oh, I guess I shouldn't use killall on this platform, because it doesn't do the same thing as killall on the last platform" lol mercutio: Use pkill jpalmer: hehe I meant that as an example of the "admin quirks" you have to figure out :P mercutio: Yeah don't let Linux users on Solaris
You shouldn't generally use pkill anyway
You should kill the right pids jpalmer: anywho, thanks for your input. I'll stick with the plain/boring resume. I kinda was leaning that way honestly, I was worried the logos would make it seem like I was trying to draw attention to the certs, when the opposite is true. I'm trying to get them to focus on the experience. mercutio: what i find amusing is windows admins trying to do linux
something isn't working right so they want to reboot straight away
experience is definitely what most people seem to care about jpalmer: hehe the opposite is also true. linux admins trying to do windows can be entertaining as well. mercutio: although 20 years doesn't seem to help over 10 years
6 to 10 is generally enough that people look at what the experience entails.
sometimes with 20+ years people don't have modern knowledge too
but it seems you probably do :) jpalmer: fair point. I've noticed that m resume listing 20 years of experience gets fewer results (same format and everything) and I suspect that it's because people think "20 years, old codger is stuck in his ways with old/ancient tools. no way he's going to understand devops/cloud/ ci/cd, etc mercutio: yeah so list the modern stuff jpalmer: yep yep mercutio: and yeah you can probably drop old experience off your list and just put in years jpalmer: the experience section between the two is identical. the "20 year" resume, just lists 2 more companies. mercutio: interesting
are you doing the linkedin thing? jpalmer: (as a stats nerd, I keep track of which I've sent where) the 10 year resume gets approximately 30% more "initial contact"
yeah, as soon as I get the resume done, I'll be updating linkedin to reflect the new version. mercutio: well good luck :) jpalmer: danke. thanks for the thoughts. mercutio: where are you based? jpalmer: I'm in FL mercutio: ahh ok jpalmer: I think if i do start floating my resume, my next gig will be remote. I did remote most of my career. Then the last 6 years, I've been driving an hour each way to "local-ish" companies. I actually enjoy driving, so that doesn't bother me. but they've started a few multi-year construction projects now.. so it's gotten a bit frustrating. mercutio: all my work is remote
it's good and bad jpalmer: yep mercutio: i reckon if doing long commutes working irregular hours to shorten the commute at a minimum is good jpalmer: nah, these are 9-5's lol so I'm rush hour both ways :P mercutio: yeah jpalmer: I didn't mind it before the construction. a nice drive, let me relax and forget about the office before I got home to the wife.. mercutio: you know that IT is one of the top industries for perks like flexible working hours? jpalmer: yessir mercutio: at least here a lot of places give a time you have to be there between, but you can start early or late jpalmer: where are you? mercutio: new zealand jpalmer: ahh, I was thinking you were UK based. cool mercutio: i was thinking you were when you said danke jpalmer: oh, lol
my grandfather was mostly german. "danke
"danke" just kinda carried over from him. mercutio: yeah i've heard it before, i had to google to check where it was from
i guessed it was danish ***: mnathani has joined #arpnetworks
