WhoWhatWhen
mercutiohmm i thought u-verse was the verizon one
how wrong am i :)
is it like verizon fios where it's fibre or vdsl or whatever is convenient at the time?

mhoranFiOS is always fiber.
But Verizon has this weird checkout flow where if FiOS is not available they recommend you get plain old DSL (not VDSL).
I wish there were VDSL options. :(

mhoranThat doesn't sound right.
Every install I've seen has an ONT (optical network terminal), which has either coax or Ethernet coming out of it, to a modem.
Definitely fiber.
[07:43]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [07:44]
mhoranThey're installing right now in my building, and they've drilled holes in the external walls to bring fiber in.
If Verizon is selling FiOS as VDSL somewhere, that sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

pyvpxVDSL would be fiber to the curb, at best. VDSL needs a dslam, like any other DSL tech. [08:03]

mercutiomhoran: it may be area dependant, which means if you see one that's real fiber, others you see are more likely to be fiber too :)
i think what's happening is people are calling FTTC fiber, as well as FTTP/FTTH
although the verizon one i recall had high ping, so it may not have even been FTTC
[13:19]
mhoranI'm sure there's consumer confusion, but I'm fairly certain Verizon wouldn't be selling two different products under the same brand.
And likely some folks are getting confused with the checkout flow which sends you down the DSL route when FiOS is not available.

mkbat&t has been calling us for years telling us to upgrade to fiber
I've seen the installations down the street, it's not fiber to anything closer than the DSLAM

brycecI can confirm most of what's been said. eg. With Verizon (and Frontier), if you're not careful you may end up with *DSL. Either because FiOS wasn't available, or simply because you asked for "Internet service" assuming it would be FiOS, as opposed to explicitly asking for FiOS service (or requesting a speed that *DSL cannot service).
As far as AT&T and CenturyLink, their "fiber" is fiber to the neighbourhood POP
(but not last-mile/FTTH)
At least in the majority of markets and every install I've worked with.
[19:49]
mhoranI'd be fine with this FTTC and VDSL from the DSLAM. We have very few options in the Northeast in general.
Fortunately they're putting FiOS in my building, and while I don't want to give Verizon money, it has already motivated Time Warner to fix their shit.
[19:51]
brycecAnd so many terms, especially with similar or vague names (IIRC Verizon/Frontier's DSL is "high-speed Internet") really aggravates consumer confusion.
lol, nice
[19:51]
mhoranTime Warner has native IPv6, which is awesome. Verizon provides no IPv6, and you have to jump through hoops to use (and not rent) your own router. It's quite ... odd. [19:51]
brycecI happen to be moving to a FiOS-served area and I'm happy to ditch my comparatively expensive Comcast connection for a juicy symmetric connection :D
Not to mention avoiding the looming Comcast caps
brycec has transferred 2TB this month alone just uploading backups, fuck Comcast's paltry cap
[19:52]
mhoranAh, yeah. Comcast is pretty terrible. Time Warner is great except for their oversubscription problem. [19:53]
brycecI've had no major issues with Comcast, aside from them "forcing" TV service on me (to pad their subscription numbers), and my rate going up lately. Other than that, I get faster than my sub'd speeds and it's got about 99.9% uptime.
Oh and that TV subscription (and free HBO) is practically useless to me since it doesn't work with HBOGO
Soon though, sooooooon I will have fast uploads of offsite backups o/
