WhoWhatWhen
***pyvpx_ is now known as pyvpx
milki has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
[00:35]
brycecWell I guess I can guess which host zeit.arpnetworks is on :p [00:50]
mercutiohaha
it'll be back soon
are you on the notification list for that kvr?
[00:56]
brycecmercutio: I have my own monitoring [00:58]
mercutioi mean for prewarning [00:58]
brycecthat alerted me to it being down [00:58]
mercutiohopefully it wasn't too intrusive [00:58]
brycecmercutio: Oh, no but I saw the tweet [00:58]
mercutioit should be back in about 10 minutes [01:00]
brycecCool good to know [01:01]
And there it's pinging again [01:08]
mercutioi underestimated :) [01:08]
brycecIt's back up, cool [01:09]
mercutioyip it's all done now :)
hmm that was under the minimum estimated downtime.
[01:15]
brycecBetter shut the host down to make up the rest of the time
Wouldn't want people getting any ideas
[01:22]
mercutioheh
i dunno i think most people have expectations of 0 downtime now
actually most is probably not the word :)

mnathani_anyone experience not being able to click the start button while connected to a windows 10 box via RDP? [11:41]
brycecHm, nope (not that I [almost] ever *click* it, there's a key for that :p) [11:47]
mnathani_neither click nor using the key worked for me
something to do with the RDP session
[11:48]
......................... (idle for 2h3mn)
RandalSchwartzanyone here with experience with icecast? [13:52]

brycecLong time ago [14:15]
mercutiomaybe explorer locked up mnathani_ ?
i've seen a few weird situations with windows 10 and explorer.
[14:16]
brycecThat would be odd because I was 95% certain the start menu is controlled by dwm.exe [14:16]
mercutiowell explorer issues can cause the whole start bar at the bottom of the screen to run into issues
hmm now i'm not sure if that's called start bar or there's some name that includes system tray start bar, quick launch, and the running applications.
dwm is the "window manager" apparently
[14:17]
***nclee has joined #arpnetworks [14:20]
brycecMight even say the "desktop window manager" ;) [14:21]
mike-burnsDa Window Managa [14:22]
...... (idle for 29mn)
RandalSchwartzI'm looking for icecast running at arp to which I can connect my DJ software running on my laptop
that way the stream will have a public address.
[14:51]
brycecRandalSchwartz: http://www.caster.fm/ offers a free plan
(literally just the first google result for me; no affiliation or experience)
[14:52]
RandalSchwartz"no direct stream URL"
so that won't work
[14:53]
brycecAh only their Pro plan offers that [14:53]
mercutioi'd suggest just trying to do it and see how it goes
easy enough to test
[15:03]
brycecJust remember passwords and other such access control ;) [15:15]
.............. (idle for 1h7mn)
mercutiobryce: there used to be tv and radio analogue receivers that you could just send a signal to and they'd bounce it out further
with no security :)
as much as security is nice the idea of free speech is kind of nice too :)
[16:22]
brycecmercutio: free speech is swell until it's consuming your entire bandwidth quota
(I'm mainly concerned about nefarious people streaming their own crap)
[16:30]
mercutioyeh the internet is probably more dangerous :) [16:35]
***mkb has joined #arpnetworks [16:49]

kellytkI'm attempting to connect to the VM Management Server for my VPS but I'm having trouble with the keypair I use. Is ed25519 supported? [16:57]
mercutioit may not be [17:02]
kellytkIt wasn't covered in the KB article [17:08]
mercutiowell ed25519 is quite new [17:18]
....... (idle for 30mn)
brycecI can confirm that neither ecdsa nor ed25519 work
Which is NO surprise at all given: OpenBSD 4.5 (GENERIC) #2052: Sat Feb 28 14:55:24 MST 2009
Come on up_the_irons, that's like 8 years old
Oh only 7
At least rsa still works...
[17:48]
kellytk:-( [18:00]
mercutionearly 7 [18:01]
brycecAll the same, there are children on the Internet younger than that box [18:01]
mercutiothere are two years on the internet
err two year olds
[18:01]
brycecmercutio: 7 -4 days [18:02]
kellytkThat won't turn out well [18:02]
brycec@date Feb 28 14:55:24 MST 2009 [18:02]
BryceBot6 years, 51 weeks, 5 days, 4 hours, 3 minutes, 12 seconds ago. [Interpreted date: Sat, 28 Feb 2009 13:55:24 -0800] [18:02]
mercutioheh [18:02]
brycecNot even 4 days, just ~2 days shy of 7 years :P [18:02]
mercutioheh
ecdsa would be nice
i haven't actually used ed25519
[18:03]
brycecI realize up_the_irons doesn't like rocking the boat, but it's just a "serial server"... how much can break from an upgrade? [18:05]
mercutioserial can break [18:06]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [18:06]
mercutio:) [18:06]
brycecI'd use ed25519 if more key managers/agents supported it. (gnome-keyring, PuTTY, etc)
mercutio: I thought that box just "telnetted" to the various hosts, no actual serial involved?
[18:06]
mercutioit's still a serial console :/
however it works
like ipmi serial involves no serial either
[18:07]
brycecExcept that it's vulnerable, I assume. [18:07]
mercutioi just bought a null modem cable
how new age :)
[18:07]
brycecbrycec has oodles of null modem cables, and even a couple straight serial cables [18:08]
mercutioi had some stuff like that in my garage
but my garage was dangerous
there were two garages, one caved in the other was just unsafe
(from earthquake)
[18:08]
brycecYou make NZ sound awful, like California :p [18:12]
mercutioheh
it's similar to california in that it gets shallow earthquakes
with high momentum but low magnitude
[18:12]
........ (idle for 39mn)
kellytkWhat RSA key size would provide comparable security to ed25519? [18:52]
.......... (idle for 49mn)
up_the_irons"there are children on the Internet younger than that box" LOL brycec [19:41]
***kellytk has left [19:41]
up_the_ironsbrycec: from my understanding, we'd have to go through every single OpenBSD version from 4.5 to now, in order to upgrade. The effort / reward just isn't there. Not many people are asking for new key support.
but it's definitely a nice-to-have
[19:43]
brycecWell you're *supposed* to go through every release for upgrades. If you're feeling lucky, you can definitely make the leap, but expect some changes from 5.5 to temporarily break logins.
(Or just do a new install because, in theory, all your personal stuff can be boiled into $HOME, pkg_add $(pkg_info), and siteXX.tgz :P)
[19:49]
up_the_ironsyeah i think it would be far better to start from scratch [19:51]
.......... (idle for 48mn)
mkbwasn't time_t around that time?
certainly between 4.5 and now
oh "some changes from 5.5"
[20:39]
brycectime_t was 5.5 as I recall
which is what I was alluding to with "expect some changes from 5.5 to temporarily break logins."
(Having upgraded a system straight from 4.9 to 5.8)
[20:40]
mercutiobryce likes living on the edge
but yeah that and one other update were annoying iirc
i accidentally upgraded from 32bit to 64bit once
[20:45]
brycecmercutio: I was curious what would happen :p (it was a clone of a production system, so no harm) [20:46]
mercutioand then i figured i'll just go with it :) [20:46]
brycecI've unpacked macppc on a sparc64 system. Suffice to say, it didn't come back from reboot.
(The dangers of doing headless upgrades)
[20:46]
mercutiohaha shit [20:46]
brycec(and not paying attention) [20:46]
mercutioi actually haven't had many issues with headless upgrades
there's a kind of apprehension about it though
[20:47]
brycecMe either, happy to say. Except for PEBKAC above. [20:47]
mercutioi used to boot openbsd from floppy
and do network installs
which was good on older gear
like my home router pc like 15 years ago

up_the_ironsAnyone work with commercial grade WiFi products? Like, you provide wireless mesh networking to a city or simply small neighborhood [22:19]
mkbyes I often exchange packets with such devices :) [22:26]
up_the_ironsnoooo ;) [22:27]
mercutioup_the_irons: are you going to provide city wifi? :) [22:33]
up_the_ironsmercutio: perhaps and office building or two, if the numbers work. We've been approached about this several times. [22:34]
...... (idle for 27mn)
mercutioAre there antennas everywhere there ? [23:01]

up_the_ironsmercutio: i haven't visited the site yet (going next week), but I don't believe there are antennas [23:18]
