WhoWhatWhen
mnathani_anyone know what the technical requirements are to setup nntp services including binary support? Specifically setting up the peering so incoming posts are propagated to other providers and posts from other providers be available on this nntp service. What server side software would one use? [00:38]
mercutioi wouldn't bother doing nntp these days
better just to use one of the few nntp servers still going if you relaly want to do it
[00:39]
mnathani_Its more of a theoretical how would one do it these day type question [00:42]
mercutioi'm not sure
i played with some leaf thing years back
like 16 years bakc :)
nothing seemed amazing back then
and i doubt it's much better now
you need an upstream feed
[00:43]
mnathani_kind of like internet transit? [00:44]
mercutioi think INN was the big nntp server
yeh
ahh it's Leafnode I used.
[00:44]
mnathani_http://leafnode.sourceforge.net/ [00:45]
mercutiobut that's dif
i seriously wouldn't recommend it these days
it was like 10 years ago that most providers stopped their nntp servers :/
and years before that where things got flakey
[00:45]
mnathani_did you ever use UUCP ? [00:47]
mercutioonly indirectly
i had e-mail on a bbs that got it's feed via uucp
[00:48]
mnathani_did you dial in to the bbs? [00:49]
mercutioyeah [00:49]
mnathani_or telnet over dialup internet [00:49]
mercutiodialup
i ran a bbs too
[00:49]
mnathani_mid 90s? [00:49]
mercutioyeah
in the mid to late 90s there was a high ratio of sysops to users
and there was also quite a high ratio of programmers to non programmers :)
(i wrote my own bbs software)
[00:49]
mnathani_would you say the sysop number has stayed the same, but the users have multiplied exponentially [00:50]
mercutiowell bbs's died
there's not really a similar environment to back then
[00:50]
mnathani_shell providers are kind of similar? [00:52]
mercutiohardly any shell providers
and it's not really the same
[00:52]
brycecProbably as many as BBS still around :p [00:52]

mnathani_what was the fist dialup speed you guys used? 9600 baud ? [18:05]
mrsaint1200/300 bps
:)
but im OOOLD :)
that was on c64
but those days where dialup ppp to reach a shell to irc but first irc was when using amiga.
back in 93
[18:14]
........ (idle for 35mn)
mercutioi used 1200 i think
but i disabled colour cos it slowed it down
[18:51]
mrsainti spent hours downloading demos and games :)
that would today take less then a ms to download :)
o maybe a sec atleast :)
i ran BBS for 6 years :)
[18:52]
mercutiowell with xmodem it'd still take ages :) [19:05]
mrsaintYeah I liked zmodem :) [19:06]
mercutioyerh
it kind of sucked you couldn't upload/download at once
or chat
there were some fancy programs
i kind of wish all that stuff got improved before bbs's died
but it never really got fixed
[19:06]
mrsaintthats why I used iSDN where one channel could download and one could upload/chat [19:07]
mercutioyeh they don't have that here
well they had isn
isdn
but it was expensive
[19:08]
mrsaintamerica dont have fiber to endusers either I guess :) [19:09]
mercutioyou paid per minute per channel for calls
as they were classed as business calls
[19:09]
mrsaintyeah :)
nowadays I can get 1000/1000 at home for less then 50 usd :)
[19:09]
mercutioi'm in new zealand
they do well fibre here to end users
well it's coming
some people can already
there's 1000/500 in one city, and 1000/20 in some other city
and 200/200 in most cities
in the affordable category
you can get gigabit direct links too
[19:09]
mrsaintYes but transit out of the country might be the limitation [19:10]
mercutioie non gpon
yeah
[19:10]
mrsaintiVE got 80Gbit cable between stockholm and amsterdam :)
soo I mean.. fiber is nice :)
[19:11]
mercutiodark fibre? [19:11]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [19:11]
mrsaintwell its like more.. part of a fiber.. :) [19:11]
mercutioyou mean you can do up to 80 gigabit though? [19:11]
mrsaintwe call it vaivelenght [19:11]
mercutiorather than 80 gigabit dedicated. [19:12]
mrsaintits 2x40Gb. [19:12]
mercutiodark fibre is single wavelengths here [19:12]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [19:12]
mercutioand you can do 10 gigabit on one fibre strand
but most people use two
[19:12]
mrsaintI can do 24 wavelenghts on one fiber here. its nice.
good filters nowadays
[19:12]
mercutioerr single strand i meant
i duno
i don't actually know much about it :)
[19:12]
mrsaintbut one month from now Im leaving to thailand for 6 months.. [19:13]
mercutiobut once this whole fibre thing started happening the cost of dark fibre halved in price [19:13]
mrsaintand at my house in village my wife come from. Ive been struggeling to get more then 2Mbit on 3G connection. [19:13]
mercutioso if you're close it's cheap way to do 10 gigabit [19:13]
mrsaintand I have to work from there soo I need more then 2Mbit.. for confcalls etc to function good.. [19:13]
mercutioeek
i think thailand is one of those places where it's hard for foreigners to get good internet quickly
like you can join up to 3g etc
but you might not even be able to signup for adsl if you don't "live" there
[19:14]
mrsaintyeah its not about foreigners.. I ask my wifes parents to order. and they cant get anything else then a pole antenna and a router with wifi and in the end its a simcard in the router..
its in the middle of nowhere :)
I asked for fiber/copper I would pay for the 5km cable to put up. but cannot get it :(
In phuket my friends get fiber np and 100/100 its easy to get.
EVEN though my vps in the biggest iSP in thai get me 50kb/s to sweden :)
[19:15]
mercutio5km cable may be cheaper than you think [19:17]
mrsaintyeah its supercheap labor cost..
:) soo np..
[19:17]
mercutiostill not cheap though :)
are there any wireless isp's?
actually for 5km why not see if you can do your own wireless?
[19:17]
mrsaintwell just finnished building my office+doughter bedroom 7mx6m building 2.5m hight.. less then 1 month finnish 5 people working 7 days a week at a total cost lets see in dollars... less then 3000 usd. [19:18]
mercutiohaha [19:19]
mrsaintYeah but I have no free line of sight to the big "pole" where there is 3g. [19:19]
mercutioyeh i find the whole thing kind of weird
you can probably hire a cook, and maid, and so forth
[19:19]
mrsaintYeah its supernice up north of thai.. go down to phuket it would be 15000 usd
ah yeah.. maid is 100 usd/month
or nanny :)
[19:19]
mercutioit's even "normal" [19:20]
mrsaintYeah
but its aloooot of money for the girl.
I mean average income for a thai in north is less then 200 usd/month
but I go thai and continue my consulting but remotely.. Make the same a month invoicing beeing remote.. :)
soo its nice..
Skipping snow here in sweden :)
[19:20]
mercutioheh
i'd like to visit thailand some day
[19:22]
mrsaintBut here we get "paid" when we have baby and have a job since before.. 80% of our income for 1.5 years.. So my wife get that while we there. and food etc is supercheap soo :)
oh I watch some "tv" from new zeeland now :)
[19:23]
mercutiodunno if i do
so bangkok is way cheaper than phuket here
because direct flights
[19:24]
mrsaintwell my baby girl is 6 months on tuesday and its gonna be good for her to know her mothers parents and things. [19:25]
mercutiohmm acutally it's not direct
it's via malaysia
[19:25]
mrsaintYeah.. within thai is supercheap flying.. [19:26]
mercutiosounds exciting [19:26]
mrsaintIm gonna go every month for 1 week to Beijing.. due to work.. and its like 1/5th of the price as flying from sweden. so my customer loves it :)
and I dont mind as I can skip renew my tourist visa I just get new 30d everytime :)
[19:26]
mercutioheh
it seems strange that that is so accepted :)
[19:27]
mrsaintwell Im there for "holiday" and go abroad to work 1 week a month.. They dont care. :)
but who does have 6 months of holiday ? :) I dont know anybody can do that..
But I do think I will be home june-aug and then leave again :)
my worst fear is driving car in thai.. :( specially with my wife and baby in the car.. Alone is ok. But with family im terrified.
[19:28]
mercutiomrsaint: well thailand is cheap to live in [19:33]
mrsaintSure is :) [19:33]
mercutioyou could easily have a holiday between jobs/contracts [19:33]
mrsaintWell im fulltime contracted since 5 years.
:(
[19:33]
mercutioi think most people wouldn't mind a 3 month holiday [19:33]
mrsaintbut yet they accept 10w vacation a /year :) [19:33]
mercutio6 months starts getting into the "uhh what do i do with all my free time" [19:34]
mrsaintYes.. thats why Im gonna cover for the oncall during my 8-12 working hours I have planned.. as its like 02.00-08.00 :) [19:34]
mercutioumm some people who do winter only / summer only jobs holiday the rest of the time
like say you were ski instructor
but i hear of people with jobs like that, where they'll actually go somewhere else in the world where it's winter
so they can keep doing it :)
[19:34]
mrsaintYeah.. I dont really need to work at all. I can have income anyways due to income from my hosting services.. But I would kinda "crawln on the walls" [19:35]
mercutiothailand is about +5/+6 GMT? [19:35]
mrsaint+6 [19:35]
mercutioahh so it's like 9:30 am there now
err 8:30
but hangon, it'll be the middle of the night for you right now? :)
[19:36]
mrsaint[03:35] [mrsaint(+i) (zZzZ)] [4:sinisalo/#arpnetworks(+cnptz)] [Act: 1,7,9,16,17,20,24,26,28,29,30,32,40,42,43,47,50,52,53,69,77,97,98,99,100,102,104,106,109,110,111,113]
:)
[19:36]
mercutioso yeah you're +1 atm
and omg
[19:37]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [19:37]
mrsaintIve been watching new james bond and starting drinking and could not really end drinking :) [19:37]
mercutioyou have way too many irc windows open [19:37]
mrsainthaha :)
I know to much people :)
03:36 -!- Irssi: Uptime: 148d 9h 40m 12s
hehe
thats bad.. I should do apt-get upgrade more often on my shell
but dont wanna loose conversations.
[19:37]
mercutioweechat makes that easy
you can do upgrades without losing connections/conversations
[19:38]
mrsaintwell I like my screen + irssi
been using screen since 93 :) soo why change a working concept
[19:39]
mercutioi was using dos in 93
does that mean i should use dos?
i didn't realise screen was that old
[19:39]
mrsainthehe :)
started with ircII ended up with BitchX and finnished with irssi
[19:40]
mercutioi started with ircii too
i wrote my own irc client that i used for a while
[19:41]
mrsaintand dcc bots in "warez" ircchannels [19:41]
mercutioit was mostly just because normal irc clients used up too much ram. [19:42]
mrsaintyeah.. I do look for someone for a coding project of mine .9 [19:42]
mercutioit didn't do anything fancy other than having decent line editing [19:42]
mrsaintBut I might end up asking a college.. I do have 400 coders at office. [19:42]
mercutiofor some reason all of the normal irc clients use up heaps of ram [19:43]
mrsainthehe yeah.. [19:43]
mercutiolike weechat is using 42mb right now
mercutio had 24mb of ram when he wrote his own
[19:43]
mrsaintbut I dont care of rams really i have plenty of it.. [19:43]
BryceBotThat's what she said!! [19:43]
mercutiothe irc protocol is really simple
yeah now days it's less of an issue
that's why i don't even use it any more
[19:43]
mrsaintwell I run ircservers since 96.. :)
and actually still oper on efnet not that Im active since 2000 but still oper.. :)
But Im thinking of installing a server on 10g port to support centos and other distos..as ftp/web mirror.
just for the fun of it
