Here's #1 (Feb 07, 2014 10:44:32 -0800) <brycec> 05:44:06 ::: brycec was kicked from #arpnetworks by ZNC [You have been disconnected from the IRC server] mnathani_: @log_search kicked by BryceBot: No matches found. mnathani_: anyone use X11 forwarding to Windows Client? -: brycec mnathani_: local or over internet? brycec: Yes
(both) mnathani_: within vpn or bare brycec: Always ssh at a minimum mnathani_: probably a better term than bare brycec: "X11 Forwarding" suggests something like ssh -X mnathani_: what client on the windows side did you use?
and does the server end need any special config? brycec: Ages ago, it was Hummingbird. Recently, Moboxterm
*Mobaxterm
reminder that in X, the server is what's driving the display, eg Hummingbird or Mobaxterm ;
The client is the application mnathani_: so whats the remote end called? brycec: Specific configuration? No not really. But keep in mind mechanisms like xauth that may need to be set to allow the connection from the client. (Usually this is automagic)
Remote end is a server that runs an X11 client that connects to your X11 server.
(client or clients - run your whole desktop if you want :) mnathani_: ahh there is a server, and an x11 server which are not the same brycec: Right. mnathani_: this is magical
linux server hosted apps appearing as native in windows
remote server works better with xrdp though brycec: Unsurprising
X11 is raw, uncompressed, and will saturate a 10mbps connection doing nothing more than opening a text editor at 1024x768 mnathani_: might be beneficial to have a windows box close to remote host, run xll forwarded and rdp into the windows box to get benefits like copy/paste support missing from xrdp brycec: Or use something else like vnc or nx ***: dj_goku has joined #arpnetworks
