sorresseanHow do the two interfaces we have on dedicates work? Are they connected to the same networks/would I be limited to 2 gbit/s if using two? (Thinking of setting up lagg since I might be potentially mirroring) [13:05]
brycecsorressean: http://support.arpnetworks.com/kb/dedicated-servers/about-the-dual-1-gbps-gige-nics-on-arp-metal-dedicated-servers
answer: yes you can lagg
and probably should
[13:07]
sorresseanbrycec: thanks! [13:07]
brycecno problem [13:07]
sorresseanhrm. if they're going to two switches I could potentially get faster speeds by using a load-balancing stype of scenario?
type*
[13:10]
brycecPerhaps, but not well. You'll have issues caused by your MAC flopping back and forth creating, probably won't see much better than GBE. (if it were a single switch, those can be configured to bond ports together) [13:14]
***nesta has joined #arpnetworks [13:15]
sorresseanah. there goes my hopes. :p [13:15]

mercutiobrycec: you'd be surprised how many people don't realise that [14:14]

mnathani_what are the kinds of things people use shell accounts for? Like devio.us ?
can they compile and install programs in their directory?
[15:15]
brycecYes
(And I answered this question lastnight/yesterday :P)
[15:20]
mnathani_in this channel? [15:21]

[15:21]
mercutioheh i compiled a binary on devious, and then it stopped working
i was surprised by how many active users devious has compared to inactive
because i've had an account for ages and hardly ever use it.

mercutioi dunno i tried downloading a couple of 10mb files
and it was giving me around 20 megabit
even from somewhere like 7 msec away
so either it's rate limited or there isn't that fast a pipe on it
[18:36]

brycecmercutio: Funny story...
the tl;dr is the hardware/cable is bad or dying
For the longest time, we had a 10mbps link
Then one day, remote hands bumped something and it turns out we have a GbE link
I have no idea what our Internet feed is though
(or maybe it's only 100mbps, I can't remember)
(And yes I know the link is currently 100mbps. I'm going to assume+hope that's what it's supposed to be.)

mnathani_how much data transfer does the devio.us box do per month? [21:01]
I bet it uses a lot of swap, given the 2gb ram [21:10]
mercutioMemory: Real: 754M/1347M act/tot Free: 656M Cache: 381M Swap: 265M/2055M
depends what you call a lot

only premium users can run background processes.

(we don't have the legal crap setup to legally take money)
fwiw I can show you http://i.imgur.com/di94xum.png
[21:29]
mnathani_hmm: as per FAQ: You can donate monthly $2 or $3, depending on whether you want 1 or 2 background processes. [21:34]

mercutiomnathani: it may be your bras or whatever that you're connecting to getting ddos'ed, or someone on it being ddos'ed.
of course searching for BRAS comes up with something else.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadband_remote_access_server
[23:52]
BryceBotBroadband remote access server :: A broadband remote access server (BRAS, B-RAS or BBRAS) routes traffic to and from broadband remote access devices such as digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAM) on an Internet service provider's (ISP) network. BRAS can also be referred to as a Broadband Network Gateway (BNG). The BRAS sits at the core of an ISP's network, and aggregates user sessions from the access network. It is at the BRAS that [23:53]
