sorressean: How do the two interfaces we have on dedicates work? Are they connected to the same networks/would I be limited to 2 gbit/s if using two? (Thinking of setting up lagg since I might be potentially mirroring)
brycec: sorressean: http://support.arpnetworks.com/kb/dedicated-servers/about-the-dual-1-gbps-gige-nics-on-arp-metal-dedicated-servers
answer: yes you can lagg
and probably should
sorressean: brycec: thanks!
brycec: no problem
sorressean: hrm. if they're going to two switches I could potentially get faster speeds by using a load-balancing stype of scenario?
type*
brycec: Perhaps, but not well. You'll have issues caused by your MAC flopping back and forth creating, probably won't see much better than GBE. (if it were a single switch, those can be configured to bond ports together)
***: nesta has joined #arpnetworks
sorressean: ah. there goes my hopes. :p
brycec: (Oops I forgot a there.)
mercutio: even lagg to the same switch won't give single threaded performance over gigabit
brycec: I assumed that was understood. I shouldn't assume things...
mercutio: brycec: you'd be surprised how many people don't realise that
brycec: Or would I? :P
<-- rarely surprised, but oft disappointed.
mercutio: ahh
mnathani_: what are the kinds of things people use shell accounts for? Like devio.us ?
can they compile and install programs in their directory?
brycec: Yes
(And I answered this question lastnight/yesterday :P)
mnathani_: in this channel?
brycec: yep
mnathani_: I guess I should read the scrollback
brycec: 2015-10-15 19:30:52 brycec email, text web browsing, code dev, testing connectivity
2015-10-15 19:31:10 brycec Also IRC bouncers, but we frown on that
(GMT-7)
mercutio: heh i compiled a binary on devious, and then it stopped working
i was surprised by how many active users devious has compared to inactive
because i've had an account for ages and hardly ever use it.
brycec: you and me both 15:21:16 ⤷ | i was surprised by how many active users devious has compared to inactive
mercutio: Date: Wed, 28 Apr 2010 00:13:17 -0400
that's when i was approved
the form must have been online, it's not in my sent mail so i dunno what i said to them
brycec: "test firewall remotely, maybe hosting some web content remotely... and as a better out-of-band-access than dsl"
mercutio: cool :)
yeh it's prefer i had any vps's
brycec: And you apparently found us from undeadly.org
mercutio: oh
that'd help
mnathani_: how much bandwidth does the devio.us shell server consume?
***: streak has joined #arpnetworks
mercutio: i dunno i tried downloading a couple of 10mb files
and it was giving me around 20 megabit
even from somewhere like 7 msec away
so either it's rate limited or there isn't that fast a pipe on it
brycec: mercutio: Funny story...
the tl;dr is the hardware/cable is bad or dying
For the longest time, we had a 10mbps link
Then one day, remote hands bumped something and it turns out we have a GbE link
I have no idea what our Internet feed is though
(or maybe it's only 100mbps, I can't remember)
(And yes I know the link is currently 100mbps. I'm going to assume+hope that's what it's supposed to be.)

mnathani_: how much data transfer does the devio.us box do per month?
I bet it uses a lot of swap, given the 2gb ram
mercutio: Memory: Real: 754M/1347M act/tot Free: 656M Cache: 381M Swap: 265M/2055M
depends what you call a lot
12:18AM up 46 days, 42 mins, 24 users, load averages: 0.91, 0.89, 0.89
only premium users can run background processes.
mnathani_: I wonder if I would qualify for an account?
brycec: but you already have an account :p
mnathani_: really?
brycec: Oh misread who said what
sorry :)
mnathani_: lol
np
brycec: Also, I have no idea what our monthly usage is
mnathani_: how much of a donation is required to get a premium account?
brycec: We're not currently taking donations, sorry
(we don't have the legal crap setup to legally take money)
fwiw I can show you http://i.imgur.com/di94xum.png
mnathani_: hmm: as per FAQ: You can donate monthly $2 or $3, depending on whether you want 1 or 2 background processes.
***: streak has joined #arpnetworks
brycec: Well good luck finding a donate button :P
(And I'll update the FAQ next chance I get)
mnathani_: does devious put you in a jail, or can you list contents of like /home for instance?
brycec: Jails, on OpenBSD? ;)
feel free to list all 6000 accounts in /home :P
mnathani_: chroot maybe? I don't know
brycec: Still no
[we don't]
mnathani_: how about cpu limits to ensure no one uses more than their fair share?
brycec: Yes CPU and memory limits (login.conf)
I feel like I covered all this in the talk...
(or was it someone else in #arpnetworks that talked about watching the talk)
mnathani_: I started watching didnt end up finishing though
brycec: All the technical details are in the first 15-20 minutes
mnathani_: its still open in one of my many tabs
brycec: lol
or you can just keep asking question :)

mercutio: mnathani: it may be your bras or whatever that you're connecting to getting ddos'ed, or someone on it being ddos'ed.
of course searching for BRAS comes up with something else.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadband_remote_access_server
BryceBot: Broadband remote access server :: A broadband remote access server (BRAS, B-RAS or BBRAS) routes traffic to and from broadband remote access devices such as digital subscriber line access multiplexers (DSLAM) on an Internet service provider's (ISP) network. BRAS can also be referred to as a Broadband Network Gateway (BNG). The BRAS sits at the core of an ISP's network, and aggregates user sessions from the access network. It is at the BRAS that
