menu entries are stored there
/etc/default/grub has settings
/etc/grub.d i think is where the entries can be modified
then "grub2-mkconfig" when you are ready to rewrite that file

Yeah they made it "better" by breaking it up into multiple files and not being clear about their relationship
I found a awk pipeline on some redhat site that was supposed to print out the list by parsing all the files
fun fact: grub2-set-default is so happy it doesn't indicate a failure if you give it some crazy number like 1000
there is significant wisdom in freebsd/other of a single config file v. this break the thing up over hundreds of files path linux distros have taken.
