So, uh... what happened with kvr21 at 03:25? My VPS was rebooted
(at roughly the same exact time as we lost power at my home)
for 90 fucking minutes.
(fun fact: my home battery backups don't last 90 minutes.)
(this has NOT been a good early start to my day, and I apologize for my profanity)
I am seriously curious about that coincidental timing
Definitely wasn't "graceful" judging by the chunk of null characters in my syslog:

(it rebooted earlier than 6am but was waiting for disk encryption password from me) RandalSchwartz: lot of nulls there. brycec: Yeah that tends to happen with unclean shutdowns, when the power is "yanked"
I've seen it plenty of times BryceBot: That's what she said!! ***: pcn has joined #arpnetworks
trobotham has joined #arpnetworks pcn: Heya, admins jpalmer: 1 admin, lots of happy customers :P brycec: 1 unhappy customer, 1 perturbed customer (both on kvr21) jpalmer: yeah, I saw your ealier messages. sounds like kvr21 had some issues last night brycec: sounds like.
But I learned a buddy of mine is on the same host, so that's funny/cool
After reviewing the logs and their timestamps more closely (read: more awake) I see that kvr21 died about 25 minutes before I lost power at home. The only logical conclusion is that the car that his the power pole was being run by an autonomous program running on a VPS on kvr21 - it cruised for awhile until eventually hitting the pole. pcn: I was wondering what the upgrade process was for a VPS storage? brycec: pcn: you're offered a choice of a second "drive" or just growing your current drive
simply email support@ about it pcn: brycec: Cool, I'll wait for the response. I def. want the current volume expanded. grody: odd, i had a power cut in the whee hours of this morning
sure that autonomous car wasn't a sub atomic particle car.. hitting two poles in two different places at the same time? ***: pjs has joined #arpnetworks RandalSchwartz: whee hours?
like when you go "whee" brycec: haha ***: phlux has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 256 seconds) mnathani_: my vps on kvr15 also was rebooted mercutio: i'm having a planned power cut soon, but i don't even know when yet mnathani_: Server Reboot Wed Sep 30 03:57:08 2015
thats Eastern Time mercutio: kvr15 was planned mnathani_
i mean it's a window for power mnathani_: Server Reboot Sat Sep 26 14:02:56 2015 mercutio: there were 3 planned and 1 unplannged reboot last night. mnathani_: s/unplannged/unplanned BryceBot: <mercutio> there were 3 planned and 1 unplanned reboot last night. mercutio: i just got up
:) mnathani_: :-) mercutio: weird power hasn't gone out yet brycec: mercutio: "Gremlins" is not really an acceptable reason/hypothesis for a service that I pay for :P
but I do get the point made grody: lol RandalSchwartz
kvr21 has been fine brycec: except for its reboot 10-ish hours ago... grody: at least since for 9 days, which i had to force a reboot
err
kvr24 sorry brycec: Are you sure you're talking about kvr21??
lol grody: :P
shit, i has 3 unpaid bills
not sure whether to cry and troll my mastercard again, or praise you for leniency or both
both sounds fitting
:) brycec: start with praise grody: have nothing for ARPNetworks
nothing but*
ask anyone who knows me, i will trash anyone who is slightly an ass - i cant fault you for anything, and you're not even regulated by EU standards
some companies here could take a leaf from you and be better
</brown nosing> brycec: Or simply put, up_the_irons++ grody: :) mercutio: brycec: sorry, i meant not sure what it is yet, i thought you'd be ok with that. brycec: mercutio: I'm somewhat okay
but not 100%
I'm happy to know that $people are still trying to figure out what happened
and aren't just shrugging it off
(if ARP were free, shrugging it off would be okay, "you get what you pay for.") mrsaint: any arp ppl here?
or just customers? brycec: mrsaint: note the /topic ;) gizmoguy: just rebooted a puppetmaster with 500 days uptime
everything still works?! brycec: gizmoguy: your irc does at least :) gizmoguy: by everything still works I mean it booted, and puppet clients can still sync
I was sure i had a thousand bandaid solutions I had improperly applied to that machine
<-- not a ruby hipster grody: eep
rubt
ruby too brycec: congrats, gizmoguy grody: and i thought python was an ass for whitespaces gizmoguy: ruby is interesting...
I'm trying to fix my Gem-bloat at the moment
and was sure I'd removed more than I should have
I suppose you get pip-bloat with python too brycec: Ruby bit me in the ass the other day - I assumed Array#concat was idempotent just because similar methods in Python and PHP were. That was a fun bug... mrsaint: I just wanted to talk to someone about maybe expanding arpnetworks concept to eu. -: brycec stabs Ruby brycec: mrsaint: they're planning to mrsaint: make them message me then :) brycec: Last I heard, looking at Germany mrsaint: I have good deals..
I do have dc in .de .uk .nl 2x.se grody: germany, really? mrsaint: ofcoz :) grody: i'd have thought NL had better resources brycec: up_the_irons does speak [some] German... mrsaint: Yeah but we have ring spanning over .se .dk .de .nl .fr .uk .se grody: i only know how to curse in german, and even that is limited mrsaint: i just launched 2 servers in canada.. sometimes I like interfaces where you click click and 2 min later box is up :9
I was running kvm and autoinstallations a couple years ago but now I do more managed vps servers and physical machines and vmware soo its more semi-auto installations.. but I do make more money then 5 bucks a server :9 up_the_irons: I can read and write general conversations in German. still hard to speak it though. brycec: ohai
er, guten tag grody: can ich disch fieken
proably spelt wrong
please say no.. im not ready for comittment just yet mercutio: i recognise ich
that's as far as my german goes
well i know guten tag too grody: my phrase, spelt wrong dich and ficken
it's self explanining really
i knew what it meant the first time a german bird said it to me
although i suspect it was the look in her eyes that gave that one away more than her words brycec: lol mercutio: grody: i thought you were saying that's what it meant
