JC_Denton: so in a ZFS vol, is raid z2 really worth it for a 4 disk array (3 TB disks)?
***: mrsaint has joined #arpnetworks
mrsaint: ehlo
I did an order this morning and no responce yet? shops closed today ? :)
***: mrsaint has quit IRC (Quit: leaving)

brycec: JC_Denton: really depends on how valuable that data is to you. :p I wouldn't say it's not worth it though.
JC_Denton: brycec: why's that?
brycec: "how valuable" == risk of losing data in this case
If the data is rather important, sure raidz2 is worth the reduction in capacity
There's also the zfs property "copies" which can in a sortof way mimic that duplication for certain specific data sets
JC_Denton: i wish there were human parseable stats of how often another disk fails during resilvering
***: DaCa has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 246 seconds)
dne is now known as dne_

brycec: "More often than you'd like." :P
Personally, it's happened to me at least twice.
And that's not counting the time that I had both disks in a RAID1 fail at the same time.
JC_Denton: that sucks
went and restructured with a z2
makes me feel a little better
mercutio: you can also slice up a disk if you have some important data that isn't big, and just raid mirror across all 4 disks.
there doesn't seem to be much in the way of published disk failures
oh 3tb disks increases the number of failures, i do know that much
JC_Denton: heh
what about 6 tb disks :P
mrsaint: still waiting for my order. :(
any op around?
mercutio: mrsaint: orders usually happen during early evening
JC_Denton: 6tb are usually archive drives afaik
mrsaint: mercutio: I order this at 1.49 PM CEST this morning and no responce other then autogenerated email :(
JC_Denton: wd reds just released 6 tbs
huge :P
mrsaint: Would not mind completed order soo I can fix stuff.
I run hosting my self :) major one.
mercutio: well it is weekend too
but i suspect it will be soon
JC_Denton: i am wondering what those are like
they did look interesting
i got one 5tb drive to try
and it was really fast but really noisy
(toshiba)
mrsaint: weekend or not still its an order :)
should be completed when ever possible.
I hope :)
want my +1 anycast node up :)
JC_Denton: mercutio: ever try the reds?
iX systems seems to use them exclusively in their freenas systems and the red pros in their truenas systems
mrsaint: any arpnetworks ppl around at all or just customers?
JC_Denton: mrsaint: patience
mrsaint: just wondering :)
thinking of supporting this network with servers :)
:)
like I do with ircnet efnet and linknet :)
mercutio: JC_Denton: nope
mrsaint: anycast can take a bit longer btw
well bgp can
mrsaint: well its just bgp :)
***: dj_goku has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
mrsaint: But I wouldnt mind just get the vps up. I can prepare and fix my puppet stuff..
anycasting in this way just a bgp session and my asn announce same /24 everywhere. :)
mercutio: there's not many providers offering bgp
mrsaint: I know sucks. I doo since 10 years offer that. :)
was google like crazy today until a friend told me arpnetworks allow him to announce his /24 for his anycast stuff.
mercutio: heh
mrsaint: But I was expecting faster responce :(
mercutio: heh
yeh i've done a bit research on the same
and one place didn't even list pricing
and e-mail them, slow response, /and/ expensive
mrsaint: I got vmware host on colo in chicago but colo provider not allow me to do bgp :(
mercutio: steadfast will do bgp in chicago
at least they were doing such
but they have cogent :/
mrsaint: I actually asked one provider today. They have 21 locations globally but minimum order was 5k/usd a month. and I thought that was abit to much just to get my 1500 doomains in a dns at a few more places.
mercutio: yeh
mrsaint: cogent is cheapass : ) I got dual bgp 1gb with cogent for backup. but I have my dual 10G connections for default transit :)
mercutio: yeh but having any cogent active reduces network quality
mrsaint: not so sure about that. It works. and it works good. But its good and cheap to have as just "backup".
mercutio: well i suppose you could normally advertise to cogent with community to only export to customers
mrsaint: better paths then alot of providers in eu/us.
mercutio: yah reckon?
mrsaint: Nah I prepend my ASN Soo I dont get any traffic via them at all :)
mercutio: really?
mrsaint: if not my other 3 transit connections die.
mercutio: there used to be strange local preferencing and so on going on
with the whole netflix drama
mrsaint: I have no commit I have 1 gig fiber connection and pay 0.5 euro megabit :)
mercutio: i think at&t were forcing traffic down cogent?
cool
mrsaint: at&t sucks my big hairy balls for all I care. :)
I work with volvo IT and At&t sucks.
:(
mercutio: well at&t don't peer etc
mrsaint: takes me 4 weeks to get them to allow us announce one more prefix :) something that takes any other operator less then 24h to fix.
in filters. if any.
mercutio: do they require LOA?
mrsaint: whats that? They require change management and 3.5 week delivery :9
mercutio: it's some validation thing that you have authority to advertise the IP
most providers don't do it
mrsaint: yeah sure. I dont care. its a good thing like eu has ripe and RIR.
but still. You dont allow normally a customer to announce to your own network anything else then what belong to that customer. :) In some way you can have a lookup done and decide.
mercutio: yeh
a lot of people just do casual checking
mrsaint: thats just stupid. :)
but I dislike US.
:) Im sorry but way behind eu in fiber and connectivity
mercutio: RPKI has made close to zero progress etc.
i'm not in EU or US myself.
i'm not quite sure how we sit for connectivity
probably worse than US or EU :)
mrsaint: hehe :) if u need any vps in eu let me know :)
I got hosting in london amsterdam frankfurt and stockholm x 2 :)
vps takes me 10min to get up :)
mercutio: i wouldn't mind a vps in EU actually
i have bad vps's in EU :/
i have a bad one in london
is your london hosting on linx?
mrsaint: I have good connection
mercutio: in lon whatever you want Im on vmware :)
8xgig connection to box :)
in lon ams fra :)
10g in sto x 2
mercutio: haha
why do you have 8x1?
is it to different providers?
i just run smokeping from different locations for measuring
mrsaint: why not :)
mercutio: but UK host keeps having downtime, it's own issues etc.
mrsaint: I dont like 10g nics that dont fit :)
I havent had one 1 hour of downtime last 5 years.
mercutio: i've got a friend who used to live in the UK, and they had terrible internet there.
like adsl 1 :/
mrsaint: I do consult for a company with services that has 99.99998% SLA on uptime. I try to keep the same my self.
ive been on irc since 93 but never thought about having a supportchannel somewhere. Maybe its time.
Even if the crew does seem to be offline here atm
:)
a msg on irc pings in my mobile currently soo :) im always around.

nån mer som e sugen o rejsa mot skid säg till. :) Han behöver nå utmanare annars vinner han? rasm?
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
mrsaint: sorry wrong chan :)
no ops yet?
RandalSchwartz: you expect *what* on a weekend? :)
mrsaint: If I get an order I answer when I check mails Usually every hour :)
RandalSchwartz: my experience is that it's more of an 18 to 24 hour cycle here.
since we're mostly supposed to be self-sufficient.
mrsaint: yeah sure we in eu do expect more :)
RandalSchwartz: Uh - there are ISPs that charge more and you get faster service
if you want that, the door is that way -->
mrsaint: yeah but i want my door to be this way
<---
RandalSchwartz: so ... be prepared to wait.
it's how they keep the costs down
mkb: you realize it's the weekend too
you're probably not getting anything until monday
mrsaint: cant wait I got time now for fix. not tomorrow :) Im oncall I need to work :)
RandalSchwartz: again - you are choosing the wrong ISP then
if you want a machine in 55 seconds, go to digitalocean.com
mrsaint: hmm email say within 24h soo I wait until 1pm and I will nag :)
RandalSchwartz: yeah, as I said, typically 18-24 hours.
mrsaint: I dont want to buy from digitalocean I did consulting for them :)
RandalSchwartz: nagging never helps, by the way.
what did you do for them?
mrsaint: firrwalls :)
RandalSchwartz: if only they provided a ZFS-on-root solution for FreeBSD, I might recommend them higher.
fur-walls?
mrsaint: fbsd is old :)
RandalSchwartz: indeed. and therefore proven.
mrsaint: but I like it and i do have couple 1000s fbsd vpses.
RandalSchwartz: I have a DO box to do poudriere builds for my ARP box.
builds a lot faster on SSD>
mrsaint: can have fbsd ssd disk box at my place np :)
I have a couple gaming sites run their servers at me and its fun :)
but they run behind my cdn to make it faster :)
RandalSchwartz: I'm so amazed at how poudriere has made my life simpler
no more "portmaster build hell" where I get halfway through and then it fails because of incompatible switches.
mrsaint: hihi
RandalSchwartz: and then many of my services are broken until I sort that out
usually 2-3 hours later
if poudriere can build it, they can all get installed together.
mrsaint: if you want vps anywhere in Eu. London amsterdam frankfurt or stockholm it takes me 5 min to fix

mercutio: heh
mrsaint: how difficult can it be to get an VPS in United states of americas :)
mercutio: peoplei find using DO usually compare it to amazon
mrsaint: amazon sucks great hairy balls :)
mercutio: yeh the "cheap" amazon has very restrictive iops limits or something
it throttles hard
mrsaint: yeah I need to setup 2500 servers in amazon by end of this year :) Sucks.
mercutio: why not just run your own cluster with that number?
i can understand when you want to run a few servers wanting to use external parties
mrsaint: coz volvo whould not buy from a consultant :)
mercutio: oh right
mrsaint: they want to buy from a global tier 1 op
mercutio: microsoft?
mrsaint: amazon in this case. but we put winblows in MS cloud :)
mercutio: i just thought microsoft may be better than amazon
for someone huge and expensive and slow
mrsaint: hhaha they want me to add credit card before i can do shit. Brbr
RandalSchwartz: "they"
mrsaint: I create server with my ssh key not work on root.
hmm
Password Reset is processing...
i wonder what the password will be
:)
as the sshkey defrault that I add doesnt tel what login its added to : COuld be root
***: dj_goku has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
mrsaint: hurms
anyone know digitalocean default login user ? if not root ?
RandalSchwartz: depends on the image type
for freebsd, it's not root.
something like freebsduser
ahh... FreeBSD
no... lowercase
so you need to login ssh freebsd@YouRBoxName
Luckily, that user has password-less sudo
mrsaint: i chooose centos 6.7
RandalSchwartz: not my OS. No idea.
you and your pretend-unix OS!
mrsaint: I add sshkey but still never say what to login with
RandalSchwartz: I'm sure it said... maybe you ignored that.
mrsaint: mikael@atlantis:~$ ssh root@45.55.231.143
