back up riht now
*right
(brycec, btw) mercutio: yeh it did KILLALLHUMANS01: took down all my shit when I needed it most ***: BryceBot has joined #arpnetworks
brycec has joined #arpnetworks KILLALLHUMANS01: oh look brycec is back how nice brycec: shutup, KILLALLHUMANS01 mercutio: what are people here doing for encrypting file systems on laptops? brycec: luks
(because Arch)
/boot is unencrypted, partition 2 is luks-encrypted, contains LVM PV with swap and other file systems
key storage is a USB key that stays with me mercutio: so you backup the usb key?
is that key+passphrase or just key? brycec: Nope. But I also have a text key, super long, on paper somewhere
That's just keyfile mercutio: ahh
do you just need they usb key to boot?
then you remove it? brycec: Correct
except at home
because lazy mercutio: yeah i'm only thinking about laptop brycec: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm-crypt/Encrypting_an_entire_system#LVM_on_LUKS https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm-crypt/Device_encryption
mercutio: I meant when laptop is at home
I leave the key in it mercutio: oh right i get yah brycec: It's a tiny USB thing, sticks out like a small bump mercutio: yeah i've been reading stuff around there
and there's ecryptfs etc too
ahh, mine are huge brycec: luks is pretty standard/common, etc mercutio: and all the modern laptops seem to still hardly have any usb ports brycec: mercutio: Consider an SD card too/instead mercutio: oh brycec: those tend to fit close-to-flush mercutio: i wonder if it'd take sdcard
i'm thinking asus zenbook atm
cos it's cheap and 1080p
x1 carbon looked nicer, but relaly expensive here.
ahh it does have sd card support
oh cool! brycec: Man that kvr21 crash could have really caused me havoc, I was in the middle of a apt-get dist-upgrade. mercutio: eek
apt-get syncs all the time at least. brycec: Yeah it picked up where the install had been cutoff mercutio: it should recover
sweet brycec: It did, hence "could have" and not "might" mercutio: oh right
i didn't know if you knew the situation yet or not
could have could also mean you don't know yet whether it's broken or not.
that apt-get based zfs thingy had zfs snapshots for upgrades.
but lack of good snapshotting on most linux systems is kind of a bit of a sore point ***: nesta has quit IRC (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
