How sensitive are people to servers being pinged? Well it varies, but there's a reason ICMP defines an unreachable code 10. (eg netflix01.ring.nlnog.net) Would you consider one ping per minute insignificant? Probably. But that opinion is not shared by Netflix and their NLNOG node. mmm kellytk: it really depends on the server i imagine things like google and facebook are pinged a LOT I'd think so i had cogent block icmp echo tests once it was damn annoying, as i was using the host for monitoring actuallyi think it was the replies that were blocked, i forget but to ip one different it was ok it was making no sense at first that was with steadfast. and yeah nto using steadfast anymore the weird thign is that changing the outbound path, where the responses so that it still routed via cogent, but a different cogent router made it work i think that's what it was.. it was years ago, and i tcpdumped both ends etc. but i assume that some providers do some kind of icmp rate limiting at times. If it was cogent it probably wasn't ICMP that was blocked, rather the link was probably down Or the packetloss was 80% nah tcp worked just not icmp and to an ip one different it was ok is it this month leap second, or last? last month.. few mercutio, why i like to use L2TP tunnels .. you can use the LCPs to graph a little more better even if it;s just for connection monitoring http://imgur.com/DAfpDRI ICMP wrapped in UDP from ARP to my AA in UK need to tune RRD to declare 150ms as optimal e] [Vomit Face]" That's what she said!! 18:05 <@fc31> wearing a nappy eek BryceBot, no Oh, okay... I'm sorry. 'e] [Vomit Face]"' hate this tablet sometimes wasnt even in this channel :-/ hahaha hotw's that better than smokeping? mercutio: so I see another ISP bites the dust gizmoguy_: woosh? yeah did it really bite the dust? or are they just dropping customers? we'll have like 3 left by the end of the year sold all their customers to M4/callplus group wow http://www.nbr.co.nz/article/m2-buys-wooshs-9000-customers-ck-p-176151 that sucks. it's paid content gizmo i'm not paying $145 for 6 months yeah. my work pays :) yeh it's cheaper for a business i think well per person yeah we do have 2000ish employees if it was somethign more reasonable i'd consider paying it, as there is some good stuff i was never a fan of woosh anyway i tried using it once, and it's like isdn speed :/ with huge buffer bloat, slow speeds, high ping yeah, the network engineer guy there was doing some pretty neat things though they just had 0 money they had plenty of money i thought they were too early probably so iw as reading about AU internet the other day i been wondering if i should try moving to australia as can't afford to buy houses here anyway. well singular :/ my wife works w/a doctor who's doing some work in NZ somewhere but it really seems that australia is far behind nz with regards to internet m0unds: how's she working with him if he works in NZ :) he lives in the US, has a house in the US, and is temporarily working in NZ i might have to find a doctor soon. they're turning smart drugs into prescription only :( ahh i see. mercutio: australia is sooo bad for internet but is in the US right now because the exchange rate is awful and makes 1/3 what he makes in the US in NZ mercutio: "smart drugs"? gizmoguy_: oxiracetam, noopept cognitive enhancing mercutio: yip NZD/USD is tanking so bad at the moment ( and it's intentional :( ) gizmoguy_: it seems that vdsl in nz is way better than most internet in australia the best you can get is like 100/40 on nbn fibre which is available hardly anywhere but even their cable is capped for upload below 10 megabit yea, i think he said it was 1.00 NZ -> .60 US or something its' .66 US i think 1 nzd to usd oops @exch 1 nzd to usd 1 NZD -> 0.657609196007 USD (as of Sun, 26 Jul 2015 16:01:02 -0700) yea, .66 is up_the_irons on vacation? staticsafe: he's in germany. ah m0unds: i was looking at house prices in the US recently, and it's so much cheaper there than here. actually, california is similar. but florida etc is way way cheaper. CA is a joke, price-wise way overinflated the house i live in here in NM would easily go for $900k+ my uncle lived in a crappy 2 bedroom house in san mateo, CA outside of san jose and sold it for almost $700k at the height of the housing boom (~2005 ish) m0unds: it's bad here too shitty houses are like $800k That's what she said!! but most are for auction actually this place looks ok for $700k http://www.realestate.co.nz/2580952 but still seems mediocre at best. although i think that house is in the shitty internet area. lightning strike nearby tripped all my afci breakers. damn hear my ups beeping its head off san mateo still looks expensive i was using santa clara for my california reference. yup, might be worse now due to all the derpy startups in bay area santa clara doesn't seem that bad http://www.zillow.com/homes/for_sale/Santa-Clara-CA/pmf,pf_pt/19553873_zpid/13713_rid/featured_sort/37.464503,-121.615906,37.215018,-122.12883_rect/10_zm/ ouch if i assume 1 usd = 1 nzd it seems similar pricing to nz. but salarys are more like 1 usd = 1 nzd anyway afaik mine is twice the size od that, has a bigger lot and is 1/3 that price yeh well florida is like that for pricing too yeah, fl is pretty inexpensive yeah i kind of assumed florida would be expensive co is more than nm but less than ca so i was kind of surprised at the difference i was looking in tampa though lots of people are moving north to or and wa, and east to az, co and tx from ca from what i understand of the US i'd probably rather live in or or wa than az, co, or tx. http://panam.cbc.ca/videos/live/video/cbc-pan-american-games-closing-ceremonies.html Pitbull is presently performing in Toronto it's near impossible for people in nz to move to the us though i've got a friend who did, through a multi-national company. and even then it took more than one application Don't forget Alaska. Nice and cool up there. CO isn't terribly hot, but they get snow (Not that "lots of people" are moving there. But it's the next area of the world I think I'd like to live) Snow++ :D yea, i've heard lots of awesome stuff about alaska especially if you like doing stuff outside my friend's brother is in the USAF as a combat controller and got stationed up there in between deployments That's about all there is to do in Anchorage - be outside, do outdoorsy things. yeah, that's fine by me that's part of why i'm still in NM, because there's stuff to do outside if i didn't live here, i'd probably move back to colorado Yeah CO aint bad either. I could conceive living there. (Though Denver traffic sprawls out and is generally awful) yea, i'm originally from boulder and prefer north of denver or southwest is nice (durango, telluride, etc) durango's just 3.5 hrs from us, so we go up there pretty regularly Ah yeah, nice Some fireworks I recorded the other night - https://www.facebook.com/mansoor.nathani/videos/10153087048988546/?l=8693931352029030016
