kellytk: Does anyone value being able to sign in to a website with your emailaddress in addition to the username?
mercutio: yes
kellytk: May I ask why?
mercutio: i usually sign into web sites with email address
well there could be a username clash
adn then you have to use some annoying difficult username.
kellytk: Do you use the same email address for this purpose?
mercutio: like sometimes mercutio is taken :/
yeh
i refuse to be a number!
kellytk: Ok, so in essence it serves as your unique identifier. I get that, thanks mercutio
mercutio: i am not a number, i am a free man.
yeah
most web sites these days use e-mali y'know
you could probably just have e-mail
hmm does level3 usually have issues between san jose and london?
hmm it's find between los angeles and london
kellytk: I personally like when sites support usernames. Does anyone else?
mike-burns: I'm fine with usernames, but not as my login creds.
kellytk: May I ask your reason?
mike-burns: I can remember my email address; I cannot remember usernames. My email address is guaranteed unique.
kellytk: I'm in the process of allowing both. What I'm wondering is if usernames have become antiquated. I've been away from web dev for nearly a decade
What use do you see in usernames if not for login credentials?
mike-burns: Honestly, not much. But I guess handles like on Twitter or Trello.
Of the five or six Web apps I built for clients last year, 0 involved usernames and all involved email+passwd. That's my anecdote.
kellytk: How many of them were content sites with user generated community?
mike-burns: Two that I can think of.
But one of them uses GitHub auth instead of email+passwd. GitHub, in turn, uses email+passwd.
kellytk: How were their identities displayed to others if not by username?
mike-burns: it showed their username.
kellytk: Ok, so it seems the trend is moving away from usernames as auth credentials, and back to social handles
mike-burns: Email+passwd for auth. Username for display.
kellytk: Right
mike-burns: It's like age or gender or whatever other profile data.
kellytk: Thanks for your input mike-burns
mercutio: so i complain about packet loss on vultr, and they tell me that they've removed my smtp block
