awyeah: Hey how do all of you back up your freebsd boxes? I'm using duplicity/duply, but it's a pain in the ass. Anything simpler?
grody: depends what you're backing up.. most of my FreeBSD box are in VPS with small initial disks and use rsync to a main backup server
awyeah: Well ideally I'd like to back up the whole thing, which is what I'm doing with duply/duplicity right now
because otherwise I will invariably forget to put a certain directory in the backup

relrod_ is now known as relrod
grody: there are the built in options dump & restore which can simplyfy file system backps across a network
havent used them much myself, but they are quite effective
awyeah: Yeah I've used those on my box locally here, but only to play with. Maybe I should give them another look
grody: aye, just remember to run them through SSH tunnels though (iirc they dont have network crypot built in)
crypto*
i've long deployed a different strategy now where i use ezjails.. i can fresh install and dump the jails back in a short space of time.. save so much hassle
in the outer OS, use as little as possible - that way you really only have one folder to backup
awyeah: that's a really good idea
all my web stuff is in an ezjaiul.
ezjail.
But my database, dns, mail, that stuff is on the main box.
basically, other than mail, anything that accepts incoming connections from the world gets jailed.
mercutio: WOW
microsoft donated to openbsd.
grody: sweet
do remember reading they had lecci bill issues earlier this year
glad my electric costs aren't that much
brycec: Not only that, but a *Gold* contributor
aka "More than Google" heh
mike-burns: I put everything in git repos, then back up ~git using tarsnap.
awyeah: hmm that's an interesting strategy mike-burns
mike-burns: ~% ls ~git | wc -l
53
awyeah: that's a lot of repos
brycec: You think 53 is a lot? lol...
(ie. "that's so cute")
grody: hah
never thought of using git for backups
reminds me.. got to pull a large backup transatlantic for an upgrade (which is going to nuke my setup again)
bloody heck my mail servers reject an awful lot of connections (mostly RBL based rejects)
mercutio: brycec: i saw it said gold, but couldn't see anywhere what that meant
brycec: mercutio: more than $25.000.
(assuming you're talking about the MSFT donation to the OBSD Foundation)
mercutio: cool well it looked like that was how much it used to cost them normally
err more than
and now they hav lots of money :/
brycec: Don't ever let that discourage you from donating though. There will be a time when the corps don't donate and they'll rely on their bank
mercutio: although i'm sure they prefer to sepend more of it :)
yeh there was bank stuff before
err spending of previous mone
y
shit i need my coffee :)
awyeah: I have often thought of using git for etc folders.
brycec: There's git-annex too which tracks the changes, but doesn't store the files themselves.
awyeah: interesting
So can you still go back to previous revs?
brycec: That's my understanding
mercutio: you can always just add some files to it
you don't have to track everything.. just do backups for things that don't change?
but yeah if you store /etc/passwd everywhere you may be reducing your security
well /etc/shadow
i like keys over passwords anyway
wow, another 0 day flash exploit
awyeah: right that's true.
But I could .gitignore passwd and master.passwd
mercutio: @weather akl
BryceBot: Auckland International, New Zealand: Overcast ☁ 45°F (7°C), Humidity: 66%, Wind: From the South at 13 MPH -- For more details including the forecast and almanac, see http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=-37.00805664,174.79167175 or re-request this with: @weather -v akl
mercutio: that's much warmer than it feels :)
brycec: To be fair, with such a breeze it's going to feel much cooler than that.
a la "windchill"
awyeah: I've been to AKL
nice airport.
mercutio: awyeah: location of the airport sucks :)
there's like nowhere good anywhere nearby
ever since android 5 my phone seems to have charging issues
but it never feels very warm
awyeah: oh
well I never left that airport
it was just a connection on my way to Wellington.
mercutio: yeh
i haven't been to wellington airport actually
RandalSchwartz: the hotel bar here in Porto Alegre is selling "shots" of Smirnoff Vodka for about $4.50 US (14 Reals).
Except, I don't think they know what a shot is. I'm getting a largish glass filled with what I estimate to be 3 to 4 shots each time.
so I'm getting 4.5 to 6 ounces of decent vodka for that price... in a hotel.
awyeah: That's a pretty good deal.
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
awyeah: have them give you some cranberry juice with your 'shots'
RandalSchwartz: cannot consume cranberry juice
has nothing useful for me
well, maybe minor micronutrients
but the macronutrients overshaodw
hazardous: i enjoy cranberry juice, but only small amounts at a time
not for nutrients. just the taste
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
RandalSchwartz: yeah. I've learned that "just the taste" can kill me, slowly.
mnathani_: mercutio: check out this image on your 4k monitor when you get a chance and let me know what you think : http://mnathani.com/uploads/2015-07-08_panorama-take2.jpg
Its a view out my apartment
RandalSchwartz: Yeah - I just paid $15 USD for about 2/3 of a Smirnoff Vodka bottle, and I'm in a hotel.
mercutio: it looks pretty coool the colours suck though
wow it looks so much sharper on 4k than 1440p
heh i just got tinted glasses, a few pairs, so now i'm trying with different tints
amber tint seems to make it look more defined..
mnathani_: if you zoom in to the top left area, you should see the cn tower
mercutio: whem i zoom in it's really soft
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
mercutio: there are a lot of trees
hmm amber tints make my white levels on my two monitors look totally different
mnathani_: I should do another one in the fall
mercutio: but normally i don't notice
RandalSchwartz: I dated a girl named Amber Tints once...
mercutio: i need to fix my colours i think
are you using HDR?
i was curious if 10% yellow tint would make any noticable difference to comptuer use
RandalSchwartz: That doesn't look HDR
mnathani_: dont think so
RandalSchwartz: the whites are blown out
mercutio: yeh that's what i thought
RandalSchwartz: the darks also
mercutio: i think that's why i thought colours looked bad
i'm used to HDR for big pictures :)
RandalSchwartz: typical 5 to 7 f-stops
just a pano
mnathani_: this one was done with a simple point and shoot
RandalSchwartz: nice pano though
mnathani_: tripod helped
RandalSchwartz: heh... all of mine have been hand-held
but with pano assist
no wait... the early ones all just "doing it"
mnathani_: what do you use to stitch the images?
RandalSchwartz: trying to find the seattle skyline that I did with a pano
something on flickr
brycec: Neat, mnathani_
mnathani_: brycec: thanks
Here is a 2 minute timelapse as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9qw7SNrWtY
BryceBot: YouTube video: "2 Minute Clip - View From 20th Floor in Toronto ON" by Mansoor Nathani
RandalSchwartz: canadian... is it in metric?
brycec: And now I have mnathani_'s address (shy of the apartment number, though that wouldn't take long to "brute force")
mnathani_: lol brycec
brycec: (It's what I do, I solve puzzles)
mnathani_: a simple whois would have revealed that information if you were so inclined
brycec: @postal M3A3K7
BryceBot: M3A: North York (York Heights / Victoria Village / Parkway East), Ontario, CA
brycec: give or take.
(it was easy since I knew the general city, and Rothman's sign+building is so clearly visible)
mercutio: heh when i was a kid i used to love stalking people
i grew up a bit and realised that some people might find it intrusive :)
brycec: Sure sure.
mercutio: err by stalking i mean finding out their details etc without asking them
even if i could have easily asked them it was more fun to find out by alternate means
brycec: I agree, it's borderline-creepy :) But it's just a puzzle for me.
mercutio: yeah ditto :)
brycec: Right, exactly.
mercutio: it went out of fashion
it's back in fashion now with facebook etc though
brycec: ha
mercutio: like if you have open facebook profile and do a job interview don't be surprised if they check it out
brycec: I definitely do a quick, cursory Google looking for other work, red flags or commonalities.
Sadly there's no challenge in finding me, since I have some federal licenses that are publicly searchable and required to have my address
mercutio: yeh apparently it's really common with low paying jobs now
they check peoples facebook profiles to see if they are disreputable.
(higher turnover etc, more difficult employees etc i suppose)
staticsafe: hello
mercutio: hi static
staticsafe: sup
mercutio: nm
staticsafe: exercising the power of my new GPU
mnathani_: I doubt IRC is very taxing staticsafe
staticsafe: heh
mercutio: heh
i've hardly tested my new gpu
brycec: mnathani_: Clearly you've never run retroterm
mercutio: i got one a while back
staticsafe: but seriously 6GB of VRAM
-: staticsafe drools
mercutio: i have 4gb vram
brycec: hawt
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
brycec: I have 2GB :/
mercutio: i played tomb raider
got bored of it quickly
staticsafe: https://www.dropbox.com/s/uferyoyydo9d4fu/2015-07-08%2013.40.52.jpg?dl=0
mercutio: but it looked pretty, i was blown away
BryceBot: Dropbox photo: "https://www.dropbox.com/s/uferyoyydo9d4fu/2015-07-08%2013.40.52.jpg?dl=0"
mercutio: i didn't have any recent games. i mostly play dota :/
i have no disk space for games atm :(
getting a new ssd
does that work in linux?
last i knew nvidia sucked with linux :(
staticsafe: nvidia is great on linux
mercutio: like it can't boost the clock rates etc.
staticsafe: well
mercutio: no fan control
oh i only want to use open source drivers heh
my linux box has radeon 7750
which is sort of ok
it was the best fanless card could get
there may be a better one now though
and on windows 980 can ramp the fan down at low load?
staticsafe: yeah thats a common feature
mercutio: i mean off heh
yeh my r9 290 is pretty quiet at low load
actually it's pretty quiet all the time really
surprising given how power hungry it is
staticsafe: hrm GPU-Z can't read the sensors on this thing for fan speed
mercutio: my fan speed is 20%
but gpu is only 36c
i wish it could spin slower :/
staticsafe: 57 C
mercutio: that'll be fanless then
it probably isn't doing the fan at all atm
staticsafe: yeah hold on lemme increase the load
mercutio: my core clock / memory clock are going up/down csontstaly
like 20 times/second
i wonder if that's good for it :/
staticsafe: mercutio: you were right
that is somewhat impressive
mercutio: that's about how hot my 7750 runs
oh it's up to 63c atm
linux has weak power gating support
i really do thing for most desktop linux users intel hd is the way to go :)
so is it good for the video card to constantly bounce between 150 and 1300 mhz
for memory speed
staticsafe: not sure how that is an issue
its not constantly jumping
mercutio: unstable load on power supply
it's constantly jumping for me
like more than 10x a second
staticsafe: o_O
mercutio: and the power demand is jumping too
staticsafe: my card is idling at 202.5 Mhz memory clock
mercutio: https://weallsee.net/r9-290.png
staticsafe: that sounds like a bad driver
mercutio: it's normal amd driver :/
staticsafe: mercutio: your load is also spiking it seems
mercutio: yeah probably chrome
hah
closing chrome fixed the load issue, but it's still bouncing
staticsafe: I have GPU acceleration disabled in Chrome and FIrefox because its buggy in both
mercutio: weird power draw is more constant now even with memory clock all over the place.
m0unds: staticsafe: yeah, hw acceleration is horrible in chrome
mercutio: chrome isn't a very good web browser
but none of them are :)
