Put very simply, /upgrade overwrites the executable in-memory (/proc/$pid/exe), sets a flag in memory, and restarts the program
That way all open fd's remain open, etc

I'm about to upgrade FreeBSD 9.3 to OpenBSD 5.7 on my VPS. According to ls -ltr in /etc, this VPS is from 1 May 2009.
Just bragging about how old the VPS is.
