hi, anyone know if kvr03[?] is in a maint window? was wondering that myself host was responding to ping, but i dont have vnc handy to try to connect vnc is connection refused to my vps* up_the_irons: something borked? i get connection timed out on that was wondering since twitter has maint windows in the last 30 min for a lot of other hosts yeah, saw that too and some of my other hosts have been rebooting this week for https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2015-3209 hawk_: there is only maintenance on kvr11 (look at the dates of those posts) kvr03 is swapping VERY heavily right now... i'm investigating thanks thanks np I'm rebooting kvr03, it just keeps getting worse... that's weird must be a lot of fsck activity Hey everybody, fsck ALL THE THINGS. fsck doesn't scale lol https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CH4o7W5UMAAzDsh.jpg:large seeing some very strange network problems.. http://kremvax.acfsys.net/smokeping.cgi?target=Remote.googledns ping responses (or requests?) seem to be dropped intermittently along with other packets to my arp metal box ex, http://paste.unixcube.org/k/21583c also, not sure if it's related, but sometimes when I connect to SSH from 3G, I'm getting a different host fingerprint ie, mitm Actual mitm on ssh is unlikely, since every client warns about it and it would be detected almost immediately. A cached IPv4 host key in your client which only gets tried when you're on an ipv4 only network like 3G is more likely hah http://pastebin.com/aWxECP1x yea, I'd guess it's not mitm ^ note the sshd version differences there different sshd o.O why is this host running multiple sshd's? it's not maybe the address is being routed to multiple boxen somewhere? o, its not your host? afaik, no o, then how is it related to arp o.O http://pastebin.com/zerLMRNK hm? 206.125.172.134 is an ARP IP when I ssh to my arp box.. so its your arp box but not your host looks that way wierd http://pastebin.com/tVb5N7Nb that's not my server's key fingerprint.. sometimes it does that That's what she said!! sometimes the connection fails (broken pipe) sometimes it works That's what she said!! its probably a different hsot hten, if you dont have that sshd version installed on your host >.> is windows involved in any way? :) no :P oh.. hmm not that linux boxen can't be compromised but the ratio of windows to linux vectors is like 200 to 1 :) maybe one of my spare VMs was booted, and tried to hijack the address.. lol yep.. probably that force powered off spare VM in the portal >.> gotta memorize your host keys :P haven't used that box in years.. well, i guess you can say it works yea.. :) I'll remove the network configuration so it doesn't configure itself at boot... was going to start a few things that i run manually last night, but the vps was so unresponsive i gave up (guessing all the guests firing up on kvr03 had places to go and filesystems to fsck) am i going to regret upgrading my phone to android 5.1? from 5.0? nah from 4 maybe? :P it skipped 5.0 i know 5.0 was a bit iffy and i hesitated for like a whole hour I'm still on 5.0 (Cyanogenmod) I have not enjoyed the upgrade. yeh i considered cyanogenmod. I don't like the task switcher sim hot swap is nice though sim hot swap? i already have sim hot swap? my sim keeps falling out :/ you can swap sims without restarting the phone and i put it back in and it just works huh nice not on Nexus 5 apparently well actually it's more that it says that it came un plugged and i have to open case, push it in, it comes out, then push it back in. i hvae moto g 4g.. oh nice I was considering buying that phone actually still am.. there's a new one coming out soon i think there were 2013 and 2014 moto g's, but 4g was only on the 2013 ones.. but the 2014 ones actually seem worse to me - bigger screen I'm mainly looking at Nexus 6 and Moto X 2014 now but i thnk there's 2015 err going to be they're both huge? :) yea :/ i was considering galaxy note 3.. http://blogs-images.forbes.com/gordonkelly/files/2014/12/2014-12-04-15.39.46-1940x1493.jpg but the prices just didn't come down enough with the 4 launch, i think they're a bit cheaper now. and I thought Nexus 5 was big.. i reckon nexus 4 is big ok when i look at both of those, the one on the rightloosks better how do you hold the one on the left nicely when having a phone call? yea.. that's really the only thing stopping me from buying it http://www.androidcentral.com/sites/androidcentral.com/files/styles/large/public/postimages/276955/moto_g_2048_hero.jpg?itok=na3R8BVk that kind of size to me seems a lot btter Nexus 5 was bearable but that size is definitely a lot more comfortable to hold depends what you use it for if you web browse on your phone on a train going to work or something then you may want a bigger phone if you just want a phon to make phone calls, use google maps, some other minor things then moto g 4g is wonderful :) maps is really quick on it too i dunno if it's the 4g or cpu or gps but with my previous phone i'd start navigation before i even got in the car lol. I've never seen it that bad and i'd start backing out driveway or whatever, and it'd start to come right.. with Nexus 5 I've had a lot of GPS problems though even outside with a clear view of the sky i dunno i hate it wehen you hvae to turn left or right to start, and are not sure which :) the compass is nice for that my old car seemed to really struggle with gps btw i changed cars and it got better i think that was part of the reason i started it before i got in the car but even with different car when it got better it was still .. slow.. and now it's instant it's really really quick to "just go home" hmm.. other than Nexus 5, I've never really had a problem with GPS and cars hmm yeh it was weird sometimes I wonder if Google's wifi positioning thing actually improves accuracy I think sometimes my phone can't get a GPS fix and it goes solely off of wifi networks ahh have you tried the gps calculator things? the blue dot just moves all over the place hmm? i think it was about 16 seconds to get a fix for me after clearing cache oh there was some tweaks you could do too yeh it finds all the satelittes without "remembering" usually there's a kind of caching I'll have to try that yeh i can't remember what it's called, i only used it on my old phone when i was having issues there was some region thing set too http://www.littlegreenrobot.co.uk/hackerzone/make-your-phone-get-a-gps-lock-quicker/ ahh it was somethign lke this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS Assisted GPS :: Assisted GPS (abbreviated generally as A-GPS and less commonly as aGPS) is a system that is often able to significantly improve the startup performance, or time-to-first-fix (TTFF), of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. A-GPS is extensively used with GPS-capable cellular phones, as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 requirement to make cell phone location data available to emergency call dispatchers... that's kind of interesting for me from memory i was using oceania ntp servers rather than nz sweet my phone updated, the interface /is/ weird 5.0.2 was particularly terrible.. had a serious memory leak how do you change the task switcher? i'm building 5.1.1 for my xperia m2 atm it annoys me already :) mercutio: you can't :/ root/xposed/GB maybe if you're lucky at least not without some third party extension lame. interesting.. two of my freebsd hosts got used in distcc for a linux compile i supose it copies over all of the header stuff you need or that it needs for the section it's doing yea, pump.. didn't realise it'd work sounds kind of nifty, i probably should try it :) mercutio: what annoys you about task switching? if it's the number of "recents" that show up in it, there's an app that requires root called "recently" that makes it a bit less messy it shows these small windows overlapping with a messsy X and so on i was getting really sick of dhcp issues with my phone last night, so i spent some time pcapping stuff and found that the version of dhcpcd used by cyanogenmod project is screwy i liked the old way of scrolling through things oh, best case then would probably just be to revert to 4.0.x then because i've never seen a mod to change it more than reducing the number of things that show up 4.4.x rather heh it's cool that it's easier to get to flashlight now i'm pretty much over using android at this point. i'll likely not own another android device once i get rid of this one what will you get instead? no idea used windows phone for 2 years before android, and liked it, but was running into issues with certain apps not being available for it and not being able to carry my ipad with me everywhere so you're considering iphone? or windows 10, depends on whether the app situation gets better or not wtf my phone just loudly said "it's 20 past two" i wasn't even touching it ghoooooooooosts ghosts in the shell yeh something like that i must assume it's someting like an email coming in whewn i had emali notifications off it's ghosts, for sure oh, cool. guess i don't need to waste any more time figuring out why IPV6 is a mess on android 5.0.x and 5.1 - https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=79576 damn that's lame yep in my case, it means i don't get push notifications if i'm on an ipv6-enabled wlan which is super awesome i don't have ipv6 at home i regularly had to bounce the wlan interface to get it working, which is how i found the dhcpcd issue i reported this morning i found ipv6 had a few issues.. they were calculating the IAID based on the first part of the hw id, and the kernel wasn't tracking it consistently so it would change each time the interface restarted so dhcp would then assign another IP to the device htinking it was new since the duid was different (different iaid) over the course of debugging it and pcapping i had like 20 leases for my phone, haha i'm finding simple apps seem to load slower on android 5.1 but mostly it seems to be ui changes like from tapping the icon to seeing the app? or after the app loaded, waiting for content? if it's the former, might just be an effect of the longer animations yeh that's weird maps showed something quickly not sure if all android builds support it, but i know cyanogen's developer options lets you scale animations faster/slower and i just dumped a glass of water in my lap. sigh. hahahah oh i have all my animations set to off there's some forced animations now though, but i meant it just seems to have a delay before starting some programs ah but it's weird, "sd tools" was slower to show something than "google maps" they changed how sdcard/ext storage works in lollipop, iirc wifi analyser is slow too i'm using internal storage and the storage is pretty quick abotu 5 seconds to open youtube That's what she said!! the youtube app that is the problem is you can't just keep trying the same apps again and again or it'll be cached this new xeon d sounds interesting immediately thought of the "pentium d" haha pentium d was better than pentium 4 at least :/ http://www.anandtech.com/show/9185/intel-xeon-d-review-performance-per-watt-server-soc-champion huh, cool yeh may take a while to come out / get cheap but looks like the e3 may have an alternative that can take more than 32gb of ram although is it ddr4? it's interesting they're going 10baseg oh wow their bmc has 1gb of ram maybe they're starting to make better bmc's. yeah it'd ddr4 - which still costs a bit more. A better BMC? HA!! More likely they're just going to slack off and make a shittier BMC that gobbles more of its memory and doesn't work any better (The typical "We don't need to write better, leaner code. We'll just keep doing what we're doing and wait for hardware to catch up." heh yeh it's one of the things that bugs me :) tbh i'd be fine with serial only and no vga and ipmi serial if they're just make it work well and let you power cycle etc i can't really see that happening in a big way though maybe they could use the ram for virtual media, and load a whole iso into memory i don't know why people in auctions like to add 12 cents to the end of their bids etc. 1100 Which to me looks like a bot's signature :P 1100? 12 in binary is b1100 oh well actually the same guy did 11 then 12 then 15 I'm nearly 30, but I still laugh when a system (today it's my home router) hits 69 days of uptime. someone else had obviously bid high enough that could make it a normal amount heh i still laugh when people say that they get months of uptime in general :/ "Aw that's so cute" I have cellphones that get months of uptime, big deal. yeah usually it's best not to talk to them :) but then i used to feign ignorance when people said that i knew linux or used being more the operative word uh oh,... they're going to ask me about desktop environments.. "Oh you work with computers right? My printer... " Luckily I'm down to monthly or less when it comes to that ^ 00:09:50 brycec | I'm nearly 30, but I still laugh when a system (today it's my home router) hits 69 days of uptime. haha (And usually my excuse is something "Oh I only work with mainframes") m0unds++ i gave up trying to find a suitable gif of butthead laughing hah i don't know anything about windows :) nothing at all about viruses and how to fix or how to make some program start or how to change desktop backgrounds or use teamviewer or something Nothing you couldn' Google... Then again, nothing *they* couldn't Google either. well their ie is broken and there internet doesn't work and they think they need a new router or should they change isp's What makes me so good at my job? (or facets, anyways) I can utilse resources like Google exceptionally well and efficiently. Basically, I'm better at using a damn website. *sigh* i actually helped my neighbour out once :/ and only once, and it was fine. I pity the mercutio but then he seemed to tell my other neighbour that i knew computer stuff As a kid, I seemed to get loaned-out and passed around the neighbourhood. Awful. that's the problem See, exactly, mercutio never let people know you're willing to help ever because then you're "that guy" haha yeh i like to walk the thin line .. i'm actually ok about saying no :) At the very least, invoice. i made the mistake of helping my in-laws with computer stuff and they wouldn't stop bugging me about it yeah the problem with helping is it can turn into support got sick of my idiot brother in law screwing up his laptop over and over, so i invoiced my last bit of work and they stopped bugging me And you had to get a divorce just to get away from them? haha you "recommend" something and someone has a problem with it, or that may have started from it lol and suddenly you're invovled because they don't know nah, thankfully, my wife's not a huge fan of her family a lot of the time so i rarely see or hear from them :) That reminds me... they weren't fans of the repair invoice for my BIL's laptop though i billed them at my hourly consulting rate hahaha such a passive aggressive thing on my part, but meh I think the only thing worse than the clueless are the people who think they know a lot more than they do, and inevitably fuck their shit up. Then move on to the family... yeah i used to work with people like that My lady's biological mother's boyfriend (or last I knew) was that sort (Whole bunch of "nope, never talking to those people" on her side.) anyhow, later lol ttyl i prefer to help people fix their own problems rather than to fix peoples problems in a non-work environment in a work type environment it's usually more prudent to just fix things aka give them lmgtfy links? no! that's rude bryce :) most people just overestimate how hard simple thigns are and underestimate how hard complicated things are. like installing windows on a hard-disk isn't that complicated. partitioning a blank hard drive can be a real PITA though for ubuntu/linux dual boot? uefi makes it a little more complicated. Windows' GUI tools are very primitive as far as partition table creation/manipulation goes most people have simple requirements So if you have a USB drive you dd'd an ISO to and you want to format that and have all 2GB back? It's a PITA (or just plug it into a *nix box) I consider that fairly elementary. not "basic" per se, but still mostly basic. ahh that i got hit by that once get a new usb stick it was even worse, as it was like a floppy sized usb stick for updating hp server iirc or futz around in diskmgr.exe. Or open cfdisk/fdisk/parted/gparted/whatever ;) and windows didn't want to believ it was bigger yeh linux makes it easier but you can get 8gb usb sticks for under $10 from all over the place. Yeah Windows on its own sticks to whatever the partition table says and doesn't have a GUI for manipulating it. Oh well. damn even with autobids i still can't help but checking auction we lost the irons Maybe he's finally upgrading to a recent WeeChat? :P Or "carbon" was on kvr29 heh yeh he should upgrade is weechat mine is older on ubuntu than arch by a bit I'm running 1.2 on Debian :) oh it's not too bad 1.1.1 up_the_irons: your weechat version is old Reeeeaeally old CTCP reply from up_the_irons: VERSION WeeChat v0.2.6.1 compiled on Mar 26 2009, running Linux 2.6.15-55-server / i686 mercutio: fired it up from an old vm :) up_the_irons: we were talking about carbon's has quit (Quit: WeeChat 0.4.3 oh i meant your carbon one hmm it's 1.2 on arch i wonder why ubuntu is being slow it's been a while since i upgraded 1.2 was released early May i'm using wily on my ubuntu host has debian upgraded already? Hmm, not positive, brb 500 http://weechat.org/debian/ jessie/main amd64 Packages I'm running weechat.org's own packages :D And you coudl too, mercutio https://weechat.org/download/debian/ ahh will that work on ubuntu? They have vivid packages wow, Ubuntu 6.06 based on that kernel version. That's an old VM, up_the_irons "dapper"
