mercutiodo pxe boot?
did you recover ok bryce?
[13:48]
brycecPXE boot from what? AFAIK there is no DHCP, let alone PXE boot on the dedi network or my VLAN :p
And I'm back online, yeah. No idea how/why, but grub-efi refused to see my ZFS boot volume whereas grub-mbr booted it fine.
(debugging for a time that I can afford extended downtime)
[13:54]
mercutioyou can pxe to anything else on your vlan
you can setup dnsmasq to do it quite easily as long as you firewall off the stuff from external
i'd be surprised if the dedicated servers can't pxe boot
yeh i know when you get up it can be good to debug later :)
i think ipmi power cycle doesn't reboot the virtual media thing.
[14:02]
brycecThat requires me to interrupt my sole production VPS,and I wasn't that fargone yet. [14:05]
mercutioit doesn't really have to be interrupted.
just dual purposed :)
[14:06]
brycecI'd have to touch the pf rules, and there's a chance I bork its networking. Neither were acceptable risks. [14:06]
mercutiook :)
well you got up anyway.
[14:06]
brycec(And if I didn't have that VPS, I'd be screwed too :P) [14:06]
mercutioyeh it does sound pretty ick [14:07]
brycec(But, there's a reason I kept a single VPS rather than relying completely on my dedicated box) [14:07]
mercutiodhcp-boot=pxelinux.0; enable-tftp; tftp-root=/var/lib/tftpboot
those on blank lines without semi-colon is basically what you need to do pxe boot with dnsmasq at a minimum. there's some option thing that some stuff needs to to say pxe i think
and you need to set a dhcp range.
you then need to stick pxelinux.0 and some other stuff in /var/lib/tftpboot
[14:08]
brycecThanks mercutio, I don't need any help. [14:09]
mercutioyeh it's more if want to look into pxe later :)
it's good you came up anyway (:
[14:09]
brycecOh, I _know_ PXE very well ;) My last two jobs involved a fairly extensive setup for provisioning new systems, network installs, etc. [14:10]
mercutiooh ok :)
sorry.
i didn't realise.
[14:10]
brycecThanks though, appreciate your helpfulness. [14:11]
mercutioi think people overestimate how hard it is to get a simple network boot working.
and underestimate complicated setups :)
[14:11]
brycecheh, it's pretty easy, that's true. Most of the work is organizing/arranging the boot files. [14:11]
mercutioyeah, when you want different hosts to have different startups and to start tracking mac addresess and using alternate vlan's etc it gets more complex. [14:12]
brycec(if you're just booting a single file, it's easy as pie. When you need menus, or mac/ip/uuid-specific boots, or you start mixing pxe implementations... then you have fun) [14:13]
mercutioexactly
i wish the ip/kvm type stuff would have open source implementation
they all seem a little iffy
[14:13]
milkisounds like a business opportunity!

[14:22]
mercutioi don't think thereis much of a business opportunity unfortunately :(

mercutioahh so it looks like for northern hemisphere january should be coldest month? [14:58]
m0undsyes, typically [14:58]

m0undswe're getting into summer in the northern hemisphere now [14:58]

brycecm0unds++ that's exactly how I lived in AZ. [15:02]
m0undsright now, it's warmer because of energy conservation periods
(AC compressor is remotely disabled for a few hours)
