[07:44] am i the only crazy one that uses usbip to share my keyboard/mouse across devices? [07:44] fairs i dont have clipboard functionality though [07:45] and it is a pita when switching devices between hosts (sometimes) [07:46] synergy is interesting mind.. should set that up in my study.. having two mice and three keyboards can get confusing during mission status [09:03] i spent 20 mins using an Apple Laptop today - 20 mins before I wanted to smash it into a thousand pieces [09:11] why? [09:23] i got it to crash and lag like hell [09:23] i only wanted to see if itunes for Mac was as crap as it was for windows [09:24] it's pretty much the same app, iirc [09:25] it is.. but for some reason the latest download killed her windows (was banshee that won it over, not rhythmbox) [09:25] weird [09:25] and i got the exact same response for the Mac version [09:25] now her ipod is lagging like mad too [09:25] that's weird [09:26] mmm, why i have an outright ban of clear proprietary hardware @home [09:26] as far as the mac goes, a refresh usually fixes that sort of stuff (the crashing and lagging) [09:26] windows is the only exception (and obious java in things like blueray/tv's) [09:28] im glad i have lots of long hair... i imagine i've lost quite a bit in the last few hours [09:28] *** mkb has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection) [09:31] *** mkb has joined #arpnetworks [14:34] buggy software is kind of the norm. [14:35] with "improvements" in software development there are still a lot of bugs. [14:35] but now people want all these features, which introduce more bugs. [14:35] people used to complain about amiga's being buggy because an application would crash the system when it accessed memory randomly [14:36] but applications trying to access the wrong memory is just "life" and because it doesn't crash the system it's not seen as such a big deal.. [14:37] it's curious that people seem to keep talking about some amigas that control heat and ac in schools. and act like it'd be really hard to replace them. [15:13] The excitement around the Philae lander coming back to life and notifying us is in part excitement about space (yay!) and in part shock at the idea of a computer being resilient and continuing to function after such a long time. [15:13] I mean, it came back from hibernate! My Linux laptop still can't do that. [15:17] hahaha [15:32] heh in this modern age things seem to be designed to fail [15:32] i would never expect a modern fridge to last 20 years [15:32] but they used to.. [15:32] well, the things people put in space tend to be engineered to last [15:32] Yeah, it really helps technology in general [15:53] i have a RS6000/360 here with dSCSI externals and original terminal/kerboard which works quite well [15:53] things back then were generally built to last.. now everything is consumerised [15:54] was quite amazed at that AC - Amiga story though [15:55] hmmm, what did chrom(ium)e update.. both on windows and linux it's gotten faster - lessy laggy :) [16:21] grody: there's still a lot of old cobol systems around the world. [16:21] grody they improved high dpi support recently [16:22] which meant i didn't need to zoom so much, and seemed to improve my graphics performance [16:22] ublock made a huge difference to my chrome performance [16:22] but haven't noticed much else than that [16:23] loading sites in general just seem more responsive than before [16:24] firefox is still being a sloth though [16:25] wished they would release dolphin browser for linux/windows [16:25] that thing is lightning fast on android/bb [16:39] i don't know of any good benchmarks :( [16:40] http://www.ecs.umass.edu/ece/wolf/pubs/comcom2009.pdf [16:40] hmm.. [16:44] i'm too locked in to convenience features of major browsers (syncing history, bookmarks, whatever) to want to use another browser [16:44] I'll gladly use any browser that has a better UI, is faster, and does not crash. Sadly Chromium is the closest. [16:45] well, i don't really have issues with any browser crashing, UIs are all pretty similar and speed is within % of each other [16:45] chrome sucks on mac, but they're allegedly fixing it [16:46] lastpass just got hacked hah [16:46] not that i use it [16:46] heh [17:10] for android there is vellamo [17:12] i do like the browsing/search hostory synchiing though [17:13] yea, i didn't really take advantage of it w/windows phone because i'm not a huge fan of IE [17:14] but since i'm using chrome everywhere, it's proven to be a nice thing [17:26] now it's being a lot more speedy, im not having to use opera as much on the lappy [17:29] i love chrome remembering where i've been, especially for using phone/tablet [17:30] it just makes it so much easier.. [17:30] yeah, between that and pushbullet to move links back and forth [17:31] main reason i use dolphin on android is it has userscript support with tampermonkey [17:31] comes in a little handy [17:32] i did have one that modified my ISP's user control panel, but they have been changing a few things and it's too much to keep track of [17:35] i hardly ever browse on android [17:35] chrome chugs really bad on sites w/ads [17:35] really, really bad [17:35] never noticed it on mobile safari or ie on wp8.1 either [17:41] @weather [17:41] mercutio: Fetching weather for your previous query (akl). [17:59] well it's kind of annoying when you get like 5 in a row [17:59] they [17:59] are [17:59] -.- [18:01] heh [18:01] actualyl it's not that annoying, more just curious [18:02] @weather Frankfurt [18:02] Frankfurt, Germany: Clear 59°F (15°C), Humidity: 59%, Wind: From the NNE at 14 MPH -- For more details including the forecast and almanac, see http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=50.04491043,8.59776020 or re-request this with: @weather -v Frankfurt [18:02] up_the_irons: got warm clothes? [18:13] ok, dia is too complex for the simplicity i need.. what software is good for a youngster to use to create geometric shapes for fun/artistic? [18:14] ideally to create a connect the dot, triangles & squares type theme [18:20] http://www.printablepaper.net/category/dot [18:20] if physical works [18:21] go for physical [18:21] there's so much exposure to techonology without even trying these days [18:22] oh it's not for a youngster, usually software geared towards them is actually quite intuitive [18:22] oh [18:22] tuxpaint is wonderful, for example [18:23] what is left of my grey matter is not coping with with all the fancy stuff on GIMP/DIA etc. [18:24] i basically have a sheet of paper with dots that appear randomly allocated, about 140 [18:25] i need something that can allow me to quickly and easily create patterns, shapes, birds, animals, emblums etc. by connecting them [18:25] why not on paper? [18:26] i dunno of anything like that, but you could try making your own thing liek that [18:33] hmm, carmetal might work [18:35] or not.. [18:35] That's what she said!!
