mercutio: grr
bloody switch failure
mnathani_: just use ion
well notion, it gives you tabs.
(as a tabbed window manager)
grody: must be one of those days
my switch was being really god damn bizarre.. it was on occasion stripping a VLAN tag off some frames
and for some reason, googles is not working from one of my computers, but is fine from everywhere else.....
im going to the pub.. i cba with this crap today :*(

grody: work fine here.. just had to correct some mistakes i made
up_the_irons: sorressean: you're not, they're just old records (from previous customer with that block). just delete them.
m0unds: up_the_irons: fwiw, if your gateway has rdns from an old customer, the portal won't let you remove them
up_the_irons: interesting, portal won't even let you set gateway rdns
so we must have done it manually
m0unds: yeah, maybe
funny enough, it's my buddy's old VPS' rdns
he had svc back in 2013 or early 2014 iirc
i guess i got his old assignment
up_the_irons: lol
***: RandalSchwartz has quit IRC (Remote host closed the connection)
RandalSchwartz has joined #arpnetworks
RandalSchwartz: OK... first of four phases to go from 8.4 to 9.3 complete
ports upgraded to latest 8.4, and they work
next - kernel and userland to latest 8.4
mercutio: 10.2 is coming out soon
RandalSchwartz: yes, but 9.3 and 10.1 have the exact same EOL
so I'm not going to 10.x for a while
mercutio: 10.2 semed early
apparently 31 august they're aiming or
RandalSchwartz: ugh pcre-8.37 has CVEs, but the port hasn't be updated yet.
so I can't make pkg audit shut up yet
hopefully the PCI compliance guys can't detect that. :)
I think the "upgrade to latest 8.4" shouldn't be distrupting... the list of files is mostly innocuous
it's the 8.4 to 9.3 upgrade that I'm more concerned about.
but it went well on neil's five machines
the nice thing about neil having a symmetric pair of webservers is he lets me experiment with one of them from time to time. :)
mercutio: heh
RandalSchwartz: "Yeah, if what you're doing will help you IT for me, then sure."
of course, I have one non-redundant machine, so rehearsing with someone else's machine is nice.
we're actually sorta toying around with Docker, although I'd miss FreeBSD significantly
it'd be nice to run the exact same bits in a test env that we're running live
the few attempts I've tried at that have not been very furtive
mercutio: the same config in two places doesnt' necesarily behave the same way too
RandalSchwartz: Hmm. debating upgrading my kernel and user to 8.4-latest
now would be the itme
but this is also a transition from /usr/src to binary
hoping that doesn't break things
here we go...
rebooting to see if it works

sorressean: RandalSchwartz: howdy. it's been a while!
up_the_irons: I can do that. maybe that will let me add new. I was just afraid there was some bug and didn't want to wipe out someone's stuff.
RandalSchwartz: OK yeay - on 8.4-RELEASE-p27
so I'm about to hit 9.3
sorressean: why 8.4?
ah. old system.
RandalSchwartz: you have to update 8.4 to latest
before going to 9.x
-: sorressean nods
sorressean: didn't realize that was what you were doing.
RandalSchwartz: hopefully the 9.3 will be trivial
mercutio: cross fingers? :)
RandalSchwartz: sure
sorressean: up_the_irons: don't know if you're around, but any chance to get 1 ip as opposed to 5? I just need 1 for a dev jail. got an internship and I need a jail and wanted to attach it.
RandalSchwartz: And with more sobreity
so maybe early friday
mercutio: i wonder if it works if you assign the bottom ip of the /30
ie one before the gateway
sorressean: mercutio: that's the gateway
RandalSchwartz: the 9.x ipv6 is different
thankfully it still understands 8.x syntax
mercutio: so assigning .0
RandalSchwartz: but I need to fix all that soon.
sorressean: RandalSchwartz: yeah, lots of rc.conf changes
mercutio: AH, i UNDERSTAND.
mercutio: yeh it doesn't seem to get passwd s1
passed
past
shit i'm being dyslexic
i've done tricks before :)
sorressean: HRM. IN THE RDNS PANEL, IS THERE SUPPOSED TO BE A BUTTON TO ADD RECORDS?
mercutio: like you can assign a /29 to a /30, then route the top /30 of the /29 and get an extra ip
(not on arp, in general)
sorressean: mercutio: NODS
mercutio: cos like going from 29 to 28 is expensive etc.
i did it at steadfast, and then i found a web site using the other part hah
that was pretty random.
i think it was typekit.com from memory, who seemed to move away from steadfast..
may have been xda developers.
it was some reasonably well known site.
i suppose when you have dedicated server you're more likely to find known sites, than if you have a vps.. as your ip's are likely to be closer together
heh i was surprised when arp had rdns setting at all
i am used to having to email
new record up top right
woot dhtml
damn this is cool, i hadn't set it heh
sorressean: hrm. my reader isn't picking it up
and freelists is dropping my emails, so I need to fix it
mercutio: it's a different colour for me
and hsa a + icon next to it
https://portal.arpnetworks.com/accounts/734/dns_records/new
maybe try going to that but adjusting your account number?
sorressean: oh. I can try that. thanks.
mercutio: who's got the lowest account #? :)
i'd never paid attention to that before.
sorressean: sweet. it works. thanks!
mercutio: you're welcome
mnathani_: https://portal.arpnetworks.com/accounts/776/invoices

BryceBot: Oh, okay... I'm sorry. 'you got me beat by about 42 accounts'
mercutio: bryce is probably lower
acf___: https://portal.arpnetworks.com/accounts/605/invoices
there's mine :P
mercutio: nice
i wonder what number they start from, 100?
mnathani_: as far as I remember, bryce joined ARP after me
mercutio: oh
it feels like he'salways been here :)
i think all of the ops have been here long time
mnathani_: he is pretty active on IRC
mercutio: yeah so am i :)
RandalSchwartz: so trying to figure out where i am and what day this
this is
mercutio: been flying?
mnathani_: @wa time in city
BryceBot: Couldn't grab results from json stringified precioussss.
mnathani_: @wa time in portland
BryceBot: current time in Portland, Oregon;8:18:20 pm PDT -> Saturday, June 6, 2015;Los Angeles, California, , 8:18:20 pm PDT, Saturday, June 6;3 hours 41 minutes 40 seconds;3:18:20 am GMT -> Sunday June 7, 2015
RandalSchwartz: no just my ususal significant alcohol consumption
mercutio: if i don't know what day it is it's a sign that i'm seriously screwed up.
whereas some people it's just "ordinary" for.
RandalSchwartz: I'm guessing it's saturday night in Portland, and I get on a plane early to SLC tomorrow
mercutio: staying up all night seems to be the easiest way to trigger confusion
RandalSchwartz: yeah I remember those day
according to my log I'm at 0.118
which explains my confusion
My life... crazier than most.
mercutio: you like it that way?
i used to skip nights of sleep with just a micronap
i can't even imagine doing that now
RandalSchwartz: well, seems to work out that way regardless of preference
mercutio: used to get rolling insomnia too
like up 3 hours later every night or something
and so staying up all night was a way to reset and go to bed early
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
RandalSchwartz: for example my friend texts me "I'm at a party and $FAMOUS_GIRL is here"
so I text back saying, say hi from me,
mercutio: i get triggered if i stay up late too often, i'm pretty sensible now.
RandalSchwartz: and she tells him, Oh yeah, I know randal.
mercutio: hahah
i don't know anyone famous!
RandalSchwartz: so yeah, welcome to my world.
mercutio: yeah i suppose you meet a lot of people
and travel a lot
which go hand in hand a little i suppose
RandalSchwartz: she's been in half a dozen movies and tv shows, and yes, I know her because I walked her home one evening in Dragon*Con
mercutio: cool.
RandalSchwartz: so like she's telling him she's cool with me. nice.
mercutio: well famous people are people too :)
RandalSchwartz: yeah... fame is the opposite of "do I know you"
and she's in the second category with me
mercutio: i get weirded out enough when i go into restaurants and they act like they know me
and i've only been there once before.
RandalSchwartz: I think my life changed with regard to "famous people" the day I slept on Wil Wheaton's couch.
of course, that relationship is documented in the first chapter of "Just a geek"
mercutio: do people recognise you much?
well geeks :)
RandalSchwartz: ... https://books.google.com/books?id=RrTATTAw4MoC&pg=PR21&dq=Randal+Schwartz+just+a+geek&hl=en&sa=X&ei=9bpzVee6OYyBygSC7IqQAg&ved=0CB0Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Randal%20Schwartz%20just%20a%20geek&f=false
And that explains my relationship with Wil pretty clearly

mercutio: what's that mnathani_ ?
mnathani_: one of my first VPS accounts
at Futurehosting
mercutio: hmm i wonder how far back my email goes
aerovps 2010, that's not very early
$5, openvz
looks like is dead now too
looks like i tried a few close together
starting late 2010 to early 2011
and arp was jan 2011
-: brycec has email going back to 2002 or thereabouts
brycec: Nope. My employer is 84X, and I'm 160X 19:54:12 mercutio | bryce is probably lower
lol "it feels like he'salways been here :)"
-: brycec creeps >.>
brycec: <.<
I've been an ARP subscriber since Nov 2012, invoice number 6709. (And I've received a total of 13 invoices since)
My employer has been a subscriber since Feb 2012, invoice number 401.
And the next month's invoice was number 1015, so I'm guessing ARP had about 1600 users at that time.
mercutio: i was meaning account # not invoice #
like in portal
i can't see an invoice number?
oh you're masking it with the X, i see :)
it's just account #
brycec: mercutio: I gave my account numbers, but i did mask the last digit, yes.
I also gave invoice numbers because I thought that interesting as well.
This is odd... a VPS on kvr18, up for 24 days, was dead. The qemu process wasn't even running. Seems like qemu/kvm/whateverthebinaryisnamed had crashed.
mnathani_: rip vps on kvr18
brycec: heh
mercutio: yeh ididn't see invoice number anywhre
maybe it segfaulted?
i trust kvm more than i trust qemu
oh maybe it's in portal
i was looking in email
my first invoice number was 349
arp's portal is weirdly fast
brycec: Hm? Yeah I was looking in the portal to get numbers (since that's what everybody else had done ;) )
mercutio: yeh i get invoices emailed to me so i was looking there
