m0unds | probably just gonna go nvidia | [17:39] |
mercutio | well not if you want to use linux and open source drivers.
gtx 960 you could go to but it means binary drivers for linux. | [17:39] |
m0unds | nah, i'd go 970 or 980 | [17:40] |
mercutio | sounds expensive :/ | [17:40] |
m0unds | i don't use linux so that's not a problem for me | [17:40] |
mercutio | i dunno, if oyu're not planning for it.. | [17:40] |
BryceBot | That's what she said!! | [17:40] |
m0unds | AMD's drivers are a shitshow | [17:40] |
mercutio | oh right
yeh in linux amd btu nvidia for windows i reckon gtx 970 is probably a good idea for windows. | [17:40] |
m0unds | by that i just meant i wasn't throwing cash aside to upgrade my gpu, haha | [17:40] |
mercutio | i have a r9 290 it's not too bad
does 96hz at 1440p fine. | [17:40] |
m0unds | that's good | [17:41] |
mercutio | with everything on high
yeh the only thing i got to go a bit slow so far is tomb raider. on the extreme settings thingy. i was blown away by tomb raider tbh it's a bit old now, but i hadn't tried anything "rich" i got bored of it pretty quick though. i think it's like $10 on steam or something so i don't care that much :) | [17:41] |
m0unds | yea, i liked it | [17:43] |
mercutio | damn it's hard to find 4k videos on youtube | [17:43] |
m0unds | there was some new edition of it released for ps4 and xbox one, so i got a copy of it pretty cheap around xmas | [17:43] |

mercutio | damni t feels colder than that. | [22:53] |
mnathani_ | you feeling better mercutio?:
or was that a while back | [22:54] |
mercutio | mm? | [22:54] |
mnathani_ | you said you were sick | [22:54] |
mercutio | that was aegs ago wasn't it | [22:54] |
mnathani_ | may have been some time back
I guess | [22:54] |
mercutio | i got up too early today :/
adn went to bed too late :/ | [22:55] |
mnathani_ | is your day job remote? | [22:55] |
mercutio | yeh | [22:55] |
mnathani_ | or do you go in | [22:55] |
mercutio | i've been remote for ages.
it has it's pro's and con's thing i most miss is daily lunch walks nowhere good to eat in walking distance from here :( | [22:55] |
mnathani_ | do you work tickets? | [22:56] |
mercutio | nope | [22:56] |
mnathani_ | manage a team? | [22:57] |
mercutio | nope
mostly just fix stuff / do stuff respond to questions :) | [22:57] |
mnathani_ | communicate via phone or email? | [22:57] |
mercutio | phone and im
mostly. | [22:57] |
mnathani_ | jabber?
or lync? | [22:58] |
mercutio | yeh and skype
skype is good for talking while doing stuff. | [22:58] |
mnathani_ | yea, I really like skype
prefer it to using my cellphone | [22:58] |
mercutio | it varies for me. | [22:58] |
mnathani_ | I have one of those unlimited* us canada subscriptions | [22:58] |
mercutio | i like skype for tlaking while doing stuff
but if i'm just talking to someone phone seems better, cos i can take it outside easily :) | [22:59] |
mnathani_ | with a headset | [22:59] |
mercutio | i feel claustrophobic talking on phones inside
always have. it's kind of weird. actuually i muuch prefer talking outside to real life people too normally. especially if it's a standing kind of conversation. i suppose everyone has their own style. | [22:59] |
mnathani_ | is working remote a perk, or necessity (not enough office space for everyone) | [23:00] |
mercutio | it's because i moved cities. | [23:01] |
mnathani_ | ahh | [23:01] |
mercutio | i used to have an office
adn i had an office wehn i first moved here. in one of those shared office thingys. | [23:01] |
mnathani_ | are you guys customers of level3? | [23:01] |
mercutio | nope. | [23:01] |
mnathani_ | any other tier1? | [23:01] |
mercutio | nope
but like 3rd tier bandwidth :) buy even arp is buying level3 through someone else. | [23:01] |
mnathani_ | cogent? | [23:02] |
mercutio | well it's a bit dfiferent here
because most of the bandwidth is international.. | [23:02] |
mnathani_ | I didnt realize that. I thought arp bought level3 directly | [23:02] |
mercutio | so you tend to buy mixes rather than providers.
check out the dns on it it's via giglinx. it's pretty much the same diff | [23:02] |
mnathani_ | is ARP too small to buy from level3 direct? | [23:03] |
mercutio | providers like level3 suck to deal with at smaller commit levels.
well they'd pay more. it's like using an insurance broker. you get the same service, but through someone else, and you save money. | [23:03] |
mnathani_ | is that kind of like a reseller? | [23:04] |
mercutio | it's also generally easier to deal with afaik. | [23:04] |
mnathani_ | or wholesaler / distributer | [23:04] |
mercutio | yeh i suppose
places like level3 vary their prices heaps so if you had more time than money you could probably haggle a good deal with them. or were buying larger commits. bandwidth is like that in general really. | [23:04] |
mnathani_ | is hurricane electric big where you are? | [23:05] |
mercutio | people in the same city may pay twice as much as anohter customer for the same commit level.
nope. they're not even here. only verizon are here of international tier1s. afaik and they don't seem common. | [23:05] |
mnathani_ | I would have expected Sprint / ATT | [23:06] |
mercutio | oh att maybe here i think. | [23:06] |
mnathani_ | Telia Sonera maybe | [23:06] |
mercutio | but in a limited capacity
sprint got bought out by someone ntt is in australia. but not here. so yeah what usually happens is people buy bandwidth from multiple providers adn then resell it. becauuse like you need capacity to auustralia for asia... and the US for ... everything else. then one weird thing about here, is that there's domestic capacity too so you buy domestic capacity to the two biggest isp's from either one of them. so it's like at&t and verizon or something where you can buy transit to either of them and they peer freely between them. but otherwise youu're screwed. because they won't freely peer. | [23:06] |
BryceBot | That's what she said!! | [23:08] |
mercutio | then most of the smaller to medium sized providers all peer freely.
there's probably as many nz providers peering in nz as there are US providers on any2ix. heh i'm rambling now :) i don't actually know how much level3 costs. but afaik providers like cogent are much cheaper for gigabit burstable on 10 gigabit. | [23:08] |
