i infer they're similarly realistic
m0unds: i've never intentionally watched it
but i've been exposed to it by people who watch it, and it's turrible
ix33: i watched csi:cyber after the slashdot article to see what all the outrage was about
it was so bad i couldn't stop watching

i'm pretty sure people will die if this continues

ix33: as if the things they say aren't stupid enough
m0unds: they forgot to patch the "fire" method on the printer?
hazardous: ix33: in case it's not obvious yet, that's the html source of a wikipedia page with really bad find-replace
ix33: you have to scrutinize the crap they put on the monitors
hazardous: oh nice. i didn't realize that
m0unds: oh boy
i'll just continue to not watch it
hazardous: one of the recurring themes was in their code editor, all malicious code is automatically highlighted red
m0unds: haha
hazardous: and all clean code is automatically green
so they only have to search for red parts
they spend like half an hour discussing this across a few episodes

that proves it

mercutio: mkb: ubuntu needs so much /boot space
all their bloody kernel upgrades.
along with huge kernels
staticsafe: mercutio: yeah its annoying
i have to keep doing apt-get -y autoremove
mercutio: static: i size /boot bigger
but sometimes i come across systems with small /boot
you kind of need 1gb for /boot
i'm shifting to custom kernels slowly again anyway
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5590432 Mar 23 13:24 vmlinuz-4.0

oh and in initramfs you can change "most" to "dep"
but yeah my kernel is smaller than their kernel, plus no initramfs.
MODULES=dep in /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
that system has that
on real machines it means if you change sas controllers or such you may run into issues with modules=dep though[15:33] <mercutio> with vm's it should be fine.

mnathani_: whats a relatively inexpensive IP controlled power switch / power bar
mercutio: most people use apc
but they're not really considered inexpensive.
phlux: Would it be appropriate for me to start a gofundme page for music equipment?
That way my current followers can contribute donations?
mercutio: yeah
sure
people use it for all kinds of things these days
phlux: Cool
mercutio: it kind of surprised me how well it works
phlux: I want to do something where certain donations get certain promotions
mercutio: kickstarter has that
phlux: Like, for XX amount, you'll get the album once it's produced
mercutio: i haven't paid muuch attention to gofundme
phlux: for XX amount, you'll get the album and a T-Shirt
mercutio: how much are you aiming for?
phlux: $2,900.00 will get me the live equipment I need and help recoup some studio costs
It's really more like $4,500.00, but I'm investing in myself some too
mercutio: mnathani_: random ebay thing i noticed: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Liebert-MPH-Managed-Rack-PDU-1U-Black-MPH-NBR09NXXF30-800100677-/391084235014?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5b0e6fd906
phlux: but I know others have asked how they can help, and I never really have an answer, because I don't want to just say "Oh just give me cash."
mercutio: i don't really know your requirements though
hmm, that's 200+v
i wonder what voltage arp is running on.
phlux: from what i understand you can probably get $500 to $1000 without even needing t-shits, albums etc.
phlux: That would be awesome
mercutio: but yeah if you want like $5000 probably a good idea to have albums/tshirts.
phlux: i think facebook etc makes this stuff "easier"
especially as far as getting 10 friends or somethign to donate money
and more acquaitances.
like someone who's seen you play once may donate $20, $50 etc.
phlux: yeah
mercutio: it wouldn't have been how i guessed it would work, but seems to be how things happen in general.
phlux: I've got a lot of followers on FaceBook who found me just because they've been to a show
mercutio: but yeah, canvasing friends for money i wouldnt' expect to be so fruitful.
hundreds? thousands?
phlux: Definitely not that many
I wish
More like 60-70
mercutio: yeah probably need to work on presentation a bit
phlux: but I have several friends/family that attend a lot of shows when I'm local
mercutio: maybe you should do another show as a fundraiser too?
phlux: that's in the planning stages, actually
It's going to be more of a promotion/fundraiser
mercutio: yaeh
yeah
phlux: business cards, website links, giveaways, that sort of thing
mercutio: got any youtube videos?
phlux: actually, I have one old one from a few years ago
mercutio: make a new video too then
phlux: but we're working on getting more recent ones from recent shows online
mercutio: cool.
the whole small musician thing is so mucuh easier to get publicity these das.
phlux: yes it is
and it helps than I can do my own website management :P
I've got people to provide the content
but I can handle the technical shit
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
mercutio: yeah i wouldn't even focus on web site stuff at first though
facebook, twitter first.
phlux: I'm not really, other than to put audio out there
So people don't have to download my music manually
mercutio: just use youtube
ahh ok
are you doing digital albuum sales too?
phlux: we plan on it
mercutio: i'm curious to see what it's like :)
can i see your youtube?
phlux: We're researching how to end up on YouTube
er
on Spotify
Hah, sure, it's just an old video my wife recorded in my house of me doing a Pearl Jam concert
mercutio: your more recent stuff is on sonducloud?
phlux: My (very close) cousin had died earlier that day, and Pearl Jam was his favorite band
mercutio: damnit my typign suucks today.
phlux: to be honest, most of my more recent stuff is recorded locally and not on a computer yet
but, I can share a cover with you
mercutio: ahh ok
phlux: I threw this page up with some songs I just recorded in front of my laptop
mercutio: so you don't record direct to computer?
phlux: http://www.phluxbox.com/kmtmusic/?page_id=2
just to test the audio player (which I don't like)
some crude recordings, but they're servicable
Naw, I have a studio I go to for more professional recordings
m0unds: phlux: have you looked at soundcloud?
they have an embeddable player that's pretty decent
phlux: and for live recordings we use a tapeout on the mixer
mercutio: cool.
phlux: m0unds: I haven't, but I will.
mercutio: i think the voice should be louder than the guitar.
sorry
i'm critical :)
phlux: It is in the actual recordings
and especially live
mercutio: cool.
phlux: I'm very particular about the clarity of my vocals
mercutio: yeh you're only using one mic?
phlux: in those recordings on the site, yeah
I literally just recorded a couple of things on my laptop to throw up
mercutio: yeah
phlux: as a test, really
mercutio: your mic can't be too bad.

Just at home
I tell you what
This weekend I'll put some better recordings up of my originals
mercutio: cool
phlux: and I'll share them with you guys for helping me out/being interested
I know you all might not think much of it, but it means a lot to me that you've shown interest and offered assistance
mercutio: heh
phlux: even just saying "congrats on a good show" goes a long way with me
mercutio: i wish i could play guitar well
i prefer this older one to the newer ones :)
even with the worse production quality
it probably helps i know the song :)
why do you play it so high up the neck btw?
is the song normally like taht?
ok i'll shut up now :)
phlux: haha sorry
yeah, that song is played way up there
it's got some funky chords
mercutio: i think it's the strings
the highs sound all muffled on youtube
but it may be just youtube
i'm trying to find a bloody pick.
i have to learn guitar more haha
and buy new strings probably
phlux: I restring religiously
mercutio: i use elixir long life strings
which helps a little
phlux: I do too on my acoustics
Super Slinkys on the electrics
mercutio: they sound good fater like 3 months
m0unds: ernie ball, wut wut
mercutio: d'j whatever ones sound shit after 2 weeks
phlux: I just use elixers because they don't break
m0unds: yeah, i have elixirs on my acoustic because they don't rust and don't break
mercutio: my electric has fucked pickups
phlux: I mean, they do, but not as frequently as others
m0unds: i use d'addarios on my electric, flatwound strings on my 4-string bass and on one of my electrics
phlux: I've got a Taylor acoustic and a Fender Sonoran acoustic, and the Fender is my favorite
mercutio: how often do you change?
phlux: For electrics, I've got a strat, tele, and jaguar
Tele is my favorite
m0unds: i have an ESP viper, washburn idol and jackson dinky
phlux: mercutio: I restring after every show or every two weeks
whichever comes first for that guitar
mercutio: yeah that's quite quick :)
m0unds: my acoustic is a washburn something or other, d-100 i think
phlux: m0unds: I feel like we play two different types of music haha
m0unds: i play a bit of everything
mercutio: hmm mine is takamine
phlux: mercutio: can't risk breaking during a show
m0unds: my jackson and esp are both ~15 years old
phlux: I also change my 9V out on my acoustics before every show
m0unds: so they date back to my high school days :)
phlux: I used to buy/trade all the time
mercutio: hmm that reminds me i have some cable to plug into computer
phlux: but I've calmed down since I moved out on my own
mercutio: with usb direct
m0unds: i bought a PODxt when i moved out so i could play without annoying apartment neighbors
mercutio: i have a washburn bass.
i can't play bass for shit
m0unds: my basses are a fender jazz bass w/dimarzio pickups and a yamaha 5-string something or other with active electronics that i kind of hate
mercutio: buut it's fun to make the house wobble around
m0unds: but i bought it pretty cheap and it's well made (just the electronics are awful)
mercutio: hmm my bass is active too, so is my electric guitar.
what's wrong with active
m0unds: nothing
just the electronics in my bass suck
if i refit it w/emgs or something it'd be fine
but there's no point
doesn't actually switch off the electronics when it's unplugged so it regularly kills batteries if i fail to pull them
mercutio: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/bass_guitars/washburn/xb125
this is what i have
m0unds: nice
mercutio: except it's not black
and it was bought second hand
m0unds: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/bass_guitars/yamaha/rbx775 that's the yamaha i have
i bought it used for less than $200 to try out bass playing when i was like 18, haha
mercutio: heh
m0unds: i think i got it in 2003
mercutio: how much wsa the bass amp?
damnit where is my pick
m0unds: i bought an ashdown 4x10 and head to gig with
mercutio: it shows i haven't tried playing in a long time
m0unds: haven't played a show in probably 10yrs, played w/friends' bands years and years ago
mercutio: i was really keen to learn stuff before there was an earthqauke where i lived
m0unds: ah
mercutio: and i was really motivated
then like all motivation dropped afer earthquuake
and my electric guitar got a little damaged
and i completely got out of rhythm etc.
it helped that i had a neighbour tghat played guitar that always came around
i seem to only want to try and get better when people play around me.
finally found a pick :)
m0unds: haha, right on
mercutio: yip need new strings
is ebay the cheapest place to buuy strings?
m0unds: umm, maybe
mercutio: i probably should get some locally if i want to get quick
otherwise i'll lose enthusiasm :)
but i was wondering if i should get a few packs or something as well
m0unds: yeah, the only strings i don't buy locally are the oddball ones (flats) that my local places don't offer without special order
i used to buy from juststrings.com a lot
mercutio: last time i bought strings locally i asked for a discount and got it :)
surprisingly the markup isn't that insane
for some reason tehy always have more than one music shop near each other
so you can just go the other one if the first one doesn't have stock here
ernie oddball are popular though?
m0unds: ernieball? yeah
i meant oddball as in weird
flatwound strings vs round wound strings
the winding material isn't round wire, it's flat wire
so instead of squeaking when you move your fingers on the strings, it's mostly silent
on a bass it can make a fretted bass sound almost like a fretless or upright bass (but not quite, since some of the tonality comes from contacting wood vs metal frets)
mercutio: yeh that's common here?
isn't it called slinky or something
or is that something different
m0unds: different
mercutio: ahh ok
m0unds: slinkys are round wound ernie ball strings
mercutio: ahh ok
m0unds: nickel usually, but they do steel too (which sound a little brighter and harsher)
mercutio: yeh i think that is what i have for my electric
m0unds: more mass for your pickups though, so they can also sound louder too
mercutio: i should figure out if i can fix my pickups
it cuts out all the time
it fell over
i think something landed on it
it's like the only seriously damaged thing i had though
and it's so much easier to play than acoustic
because the strings are close to the neck
i dunno why people say you should start with acoustic
it seems harder?
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
m0unds: might check to see if you have a weak solder joint on the vol/tone pots
or if you have a pickup selector, there
mercutio: well it's physically pushed in too
and it was immediately after earthquake
but yeah the soldering may be loose
but it needs to be positioned properly somehow too
i imagine where the scre goes in as pushed athrouugh a bit
i think i'm going to try taking it somewhere that does repairs
but maybe i shoudl check myself first
m0unds: should have adjustment screws
wait, bass or guitar?
mercutio: guitar
yeah buut i think it's pushed through
m0unds: oh
hm
mercutio: i can't even remember the make of it
i should have another look
one was worse than the other
it doesn't look that bad actually
schecter
mostly the paint is chipped a bit
actually it seemes like the selector for pickuups is the biggest issue
that may b eeasy to fix
when you have a pots that makes noise when you move it around
that normally means it's old and needs replacing, right?
m0unds: http://www.cisco.com/web/about/doing_business/leap-second.html#%7EProductInformation wee
mercutio: but if it suddenly did that after water damage does that mean it may be able to be cleaned?
m0unds: yeah, you could try potentiometer cleaner
it'll get rid of scratchiness if it's not caused by corrosion
mercutio: well it got bad suddenly
but i think fish tank landed over it
surprisingly no strings broke
m0unds: oh
mercutio: i can probably replace the pots
and the switch
buut i duunno if the pickups are ok
hmm pickups cost heaps
looks to be around $150 US for pickups plus shipping
so hopefulyl it's just the pots :)
