now its' my turun to get disconnected really must remind card company arpnetworks is a regular foreign transaction they blocked last two forbsome reason but finally let it go through cheeky sh1ts have started charging currency conversion too i wonder if my paypal mc will charge currency conv if i use that to pay arp Maybe you could use BTC? arp accepts bitcoins? i has 3.something 3.765 and the audacity, two of my staff are moaning i paid them today instead of tomorrow, which is a bank hokiday, as is monday.. next time ill pay them after Since you mentioned SMTP auth attacks yesterday, I've noticed I'm getting hit with them too. *sigh* Nothing simple rate-limiting shouldn't take care of. interesting (Not on ARP - I don't run a mail service on ARP, but a different server I admin) brycec: with things like that it tends to be "everywhere" grody: paypal conversion fees are higher than my bank my bank doesn't charge fees for currency conversion til a certain $ amt like $500 or $1000 or something oh interesting i have flat 2.5% charge yeah, my old bank was about that i must remember to do something about that i'm sure there'll be a way to get lower % my shells didn't die after a day idle It seemed equally likely to be an "everywhere" thing as being a "targeted subnet" thing. Regardless, I included the information. yeah my mail server isn't on arp either :) first reboot of my box in months just upgraded all the ports. kernel update next possibility that I might be on the wrong end of GamerGate next wednesday, so I need to make sure all my security patches are in. Good luck. Yeah... freebsdgirl says I'm not likely going to be targetted, but since we're presenting her point of view (which the idiots hate), it might go sour for people in the crossfire. I think this will be one episode where I won't mention my email address, even though it's on the website so there may be more ddos attacks? hard to tell randi isn't sure, but some of the famous people in GG have been doxed. I have nothing to hide, so that won't be much of an issue. That's what she said!! You say that now, until you are "swatted" nothign to hide doesn't mean not beign attacked :) ^ precisely my point And in this day and age, it could be cyberattacks, and it could be physical. kind of scary isn't it. It is, and it's truly saddening + maddening. i keep expecting my phone number to be cyberattacked when i have it listed on whois for some reason it doesn't seem to be a problem. but i'd much rather have "open contact details" and yet a part of me is kind of paranoid. the problem isn't that i have anything to hide or anything. it's just that there's kind of non-descriminate cyberstalking etc these days. i think the cheap voip phone calls thing made more telemarketers canvas normal phone numbers. but it doesn't seem targeted yet. but it's not a if, rather a when. it's awesome that we live in an age where you disagree with a POV and attack the person, their livelihood, whatever instead of trying to have intelligent discussion with them indeed staticsafe: forgot to ask you- what'd you think of tycho's visual stuff? prettttttttty haha, right on :) m0unds1: blame the internet i don't need to blame anything people are just turning into sociopaths there has been growing research suggesting that internet use makes people more shortsighted with short attention spans, less deep thinking etc. what were you saying? although i don't think it's "new" i think it's getting worse. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/internet/7967894/How-the-Internet-is-making-us-stupid.html it could be that it's worse for younger people that grew up with the internet it doesn't help that parents seem to think that giving smartphones and tablets to children is a good idea i don't have any children, and am undecided about whether it's good or bad m0unds -- but schools here are requiring tablets, internet at hoem etc now. like, super young kids who end up with absurdly short attention spans, can't read a book, etc because they're in such desperate need of electronic stimulus and if you're 13 and don't have a smartphone you'll be kind of outcast afaik dunno about that, most of my friends' kids who are around that age don't have smartphones and are happy some of them have new fancy iphones etc too might be regional, kids in other countries could be dicks more than they are here m0unds: maybe it's diff there? well my friend has kids and the school starts at like 11 years old? and they require tablets etc. it's a "byod" policy. which allows ipads, google tablets, chromebooks etc, afaik. what weirded me otu is that they use tablets for email sure, but there's a difference between cirriculum driven by devices and living and breathing every waking moment with a phone or tablet m0unds: network problems? no, stupid freenode nickserv was spitting out garbage when i was trying to auth ahh so i just reconnected and it seemed fine after i wonder if there are any studies to show smartphone ownership at 13 yo it seems disconcerting to me. this statistic says 57% of 12 to 13 year olds have cellphones, and 87% of 14 to 17 although that's not smartphone necessarily But in this day and age, it's almost guaranteed to be a smartphone. "Dumbphones" are increasingly rare yeah true so yeah when tehy reach 14 ytou kind of have to? and when tehy're 12 you kind of have to consider it I've got a big solo concert to do tomorrow guys and I'm nervous I even had to get a permit from the City of New Orleans to play what do you play? guitar, harmonica, and vocals awesome break a leg but I can play piano, banjo, bass, and violin I just don't during my solo shows tomorrow is one of the biggest ones I've ever done I've got sound checks starting at 12 noon, I go on at 1700, and I'm slotted from 1700 - 2000 3 hours? Yep Long show That's what she said!! I'm headlining wow sounds exciting and scary :) Haha, make or break time really This could be huge for me maybe have a shot or two? On the other hand, it could ruin any hopes I've ever had at attaining a music career i found chartreuse amazing That's what she said!! Oh definitely err find it's like amazingly rejuvinating not just drunk-feeling phlux: you play violin? I started learning it... fucking hard. Guitar was easy. ;) I'll be out there a solid 5 hours before I go on, so I'll be diving in the alcohol a little bit before I take on the stage up_the_irons: I've been playing guitar since I was 5 (took lessons at my father's request) I just took to strings naturally after that Piano helped me learn everything I wanted i play guitar, bass, drums and pianner upright bass is fun, but i have no space for one :) @google pianner 3,340 total results returned for 'pianner', here's 3 Urban Dictionary: pianner (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pianner) Feb 6, 2009 ... When you feel like you've practiced enough, practice again. phlux: lol I beat the living shit out of some violins learning how to get things right I get so frustrated when I'm not perfect the closest i've experienced is bends on guitar. get yourself a slide it essentially makes you fretless hmm, pianos often sound badly tuned to me it happens probably because it's harder to tune them. it is hard to tune i've always hired someone i has a keyboard. it sounds terrible. but it has midi, and they keys that do light/firm pushes. or wahtever you call it. so i assume it's probably possible to improve the sound but expensive pianos do actually sound pretty awesome even if you can hardly play like me phlux: do you get paid to play? velocity sensitive keys? yeah, is that what you call it i have a yamaha electric piano thing slightly shorter than a full scale i have casio ctk-900 so seems short? 61 keys it's 83 normally isn't it? 88 oh it's 88 normally isn't 83 how many keys pc xt has? seems it is :) mercutio: yep, I do. $250/hr right now so I'll pull home $750 tomorrow does that include the 5 hours? ahh maybe one day I'll be famous and I can charge $10k/hr like Pearl Jam :P is that how much they charge? how much does each person make? from what i've heard starving artist tends to be where it's at for most musicians and that lots of lower musicians make more money teaching people to play than playing themselves. that's true I make a lot more money being in the USCG than I do performing :P I'd love to quit the CG though Focus on the music so it's more about because you want to than to make money but I have a wife and child to support yeah right now it is but if I focused on it primarily, I'd need to support my family somehow by teaching :/ you could lose your passion i supupose nah I could definitely teach I love teaching When I teach, I always think maybe I'm instructing the next Hendrix or something and that, thanks to me, this dude is going to be hugely famous someday and *I* gave him/her a skill that they can use for the rest of their lives regardless of age or occupation While my friends were learning how to play football, I was learning music Now, I still watch football, believe me but at 26/27, are my friends still playing competitive football? nope am I still making music? bet your ass! phlux: Best of luck, break a leg! Violin was the first (okay, only really) string instrument I learned. It's kindof ruined me on fretted instruments, "chords" just don't come naturally to me. However perfect pitch does. :D But I will tell you that there is nothing "close enough" when it comes to a note - the closer you are without being spot on, the more wrong it sounds and stands-out.
