mhoranWhat's with the decimal wind speed ...
That is not useful.
Ah perhaps translated from knots.
Division of some sorts.
[10:13]
brycecIt seems odd that knots would be used for wind speed
Doesn't make much sense for anything but water speed
[10:15]
mhoranAs a pilot, I disagree! [10:15]
m0unds^^^^^^ [10:16]
mhoranEverything is measured in knots, w.r.t. airspeed, and wind. [10:16]
m0undsyep [10:16]
mhoran(Older airplanes do measure in MPH sometimes, but modern are all knots.) [10:16]
brycecBut I can't very well toss a rope out the plane windows and measure [10:16]
mhoranDistance traveled is is also knots. [10:16]
brycecmhoran: Not NM?
(Nautical Miles, not New Mexico)
[10:16]
mhoranWell, nautical miles (distance). [10:17]
m0unds(i know) [10:17]
brycec(i know (i know)) [10:17]
mhoran"A nautical mile (symbol M, NM or nmi) is a unit of distance that is approximately one minute of arc measured along any meridian."
So yes, we don't measure with a rope, but it is useful for measurement vs. miles.
Of course my airplane was designed by an Austrian company so there's an awesome mix of knots, nautical miles, meters, statute miles, pounds, and kilograms.
Oh, and fahrenheit and celsius.
[10:17]
m0undsdiamond? [10:19]
mhoranIndeed. [10:19]

mnathani_whats the most userfriendly BSD that provides a decent graphical interface for Desktop use? [15:20]
mike-burnsAre you asking us for our favorite BSD? [15:21]
mnathani_sure, if you use it on a desktop [15:23]
mike-burnsI use OpenBSD on my laptop. [15:23]
mnathani_do you find the array of software available comparable to that on linux? [15:23]
mike-burnsNo idea, but it compares decently to FreeBSD. [15:23]
brycecI've heard PC-BSD is aiming to be that uber-friendly desktop BSD
(But I've never used it)
Unless you care about 802.11n speed, or bluetooth, or... :P (re: OpenBSD compared to FreeBSD)
[15:23]
mike-burnsHeh, indeed. [15:24]
brycec(Not knocking, per-se, but somebody expecting "everything Linux does," especially desktop-oriented, would be disappointed. So it needed to be mentioned.) [15:27]
mike-burnsIt's definitely fair to point out. [15:27]
mercutioi'd just use openbsd
decent graphical interface to me = ion
but i'm pretty sure you can run gnome on it
[15:27]
mike-burnsGNOME3 works.
But yeah, if you want full multimedia and all working hardware and so on, Linux wins.
[15:27]
brycecAnd FreeBSD (and PC-BSD, I'm told) follows up. [15:31]
mike-burnsEither way, LibertyBSD probably has the worst support. [15:33]
..... (idle for 23mn)
m0undsPC-BSD was alright - i tested it on a notebook
used it for a week or two. didn't encounter anything that i wouldn't have also encountered w/linux
[15:56]
....... (idle for 34mn)
acf_I used PC-BSD for a couple of years actually
on my laptop
[16:30]
mercutioi've never had huge desktop issues with openbsd
when i first used it on desktop it worked a lot easier than linux
like just plug a mouse in and it works. although linux has fixed that now i think :)
the usb mouse support on openbsd was good before linux was good :)
also openbsd has a proper audio mixer now.
i haven't used it in years, but i imagine web browser issues may happen.
but if that's fine, everything else shoudl be fine.
you may have to use chromium/firefox as chrome may not be supported.
so you'll probably be missing flash support, which may be seen as an advantage.

acf_brycec: funny thing with this
new Thinkpad
I can hear 60Hz hum in my headphones when it's plugged in
but only if I use the new style power supply that came with it
[18:56]
.... (idle for 16mn)
mhoranFascinating!
I get that as well but when I use my noise canceling headphones it's masked by the white noise.
[19:12]
up_the_ironsi think that's a bad ground somewhere [19:21]
mercutioacf: so it's fine if on battery? [19:33]
m0undssounds like a crappy psu
those little switching dc psus suck
the one for my old laptop caused a ticking via headphone output or usb dac output. i got a replacement from hp and it did the same thing, so i got an aftermarket one and it stopped
[19:45]
.... (idle for 15mn)
mercutiothey're normally interchangeable afaik
other than the 65/90watt diff
i dunno why they use 19v
[20:01]
m0undsbarrel config isn't always the same [20:03]
mercutioahh
you mean polarity or size?
[20:03]
m0undssize and pinout can vary
both
[20:03]
mercutiook, there's not that many kinds though [20:04]
m0undsm0unds shrugs [20:04]
mercutioso i assume hp will work with hp, lenovo with lenovo etc
across models.
"for the most part"
[20:04]
m0undsi had two different hp laptops with two different sized plugs
yea
[20:04]
mercutioactually my chromebook has a slightly smaller power plug i think [20:04]
m0undsboth were elitebooks, one had a huge plug, the other had a tiny one [20:04]
mercutioi have multiple things using the older big ones and just chromebook using the smaller.
i have a monitor that takes laptop psu :/
[20:05]
acf_yea, it works fine on battery
and also on the old style power supply
[20:06]
mercutiobut yeah doing a bit of research and finding a different psu may help
or just plugging it in somewhere elser
i've had hum issues with amps at times, it's bloody annoying
oh just use the old psu i suppsoe :)
does the US have earth plugs?
all the devices i see seem to be 2 pin rather than 3 pin
but maybe it's just what i've come across
[20:06]
acf_yes, but Thinkpad power supplies don't [20:11]
mnathani_In Canada we do [20:11]
acf_all of the other laptop ones I've seen do though [20:11]
mercutiomy chromebook psu doesn't. [20:11]
mnathani_is the power polarized atleast? ie: can you plug it in either direction? [20:11]
mercutioand it's a US style plug
mnathani_: either direction is fine
[20:11]
acf_same [20:12]
mercutioit's cool how nearly everything has power supplies that can operate on different voltages now [20:12]
mnathani_some devices here are one way only, still without earth / ground plug [20:12]
mercutioall devices here are one way only
it's kind of handy to flip cellphone chargers aronud the other way so it doesn't block plugs
[20:13]
..... (idle for 23mn)
mnathani_anyone remember how to setup openvpn to provide ipv6 connectivity via an ipv4 tunnel? [20:36]
........ (idle for 37mn)
RandalSchwartzI think you have to use the tap device instead of tun
tap bridges the lower layer as mac addresses, not IP addresses.
and then there's this: https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/IPv6
I wonder why they don't use fe80 addresses there
[21:13]
acf_you can do either a routed or bridged VPN
if your /48 is routed to you
ie,
eth0: 2607:f2f8:a0e0:1::1/64
tun0: 2607:f2f8:a0e0:2::1/64
route add -6 2607:f2f8:a0e0:3::/64 2607:f2f8:a0e0:2::2
assuming the other end of your tunnel is 2607:f2f8:a0e0:2::2
you can use fe80 addresses for some of those
[21:21]
RandalSchwartzyeah, you still have to use a piece of your /48 (ideally a /64) on your link
err... your machine at the other end
so it could be {internet} -> [your front facing /64] -> [fe80] -> [your second /64]
or {internet} -> [front /64] -> [tunnel /64] -> [back 64]
or {internet} -> [front /64] -> [tunnel /64] with no hosts behind
[21:24]
acf_also remember to enable routing in Linux
for IPv6
[21:26]
RandalSchwartzif you use fe80 for the tunnel, not wasting a /64 even if you want to use a 64 in the back [21:26]
..... (idle for 20mn)
brycecmnathani_: server-ipv6 {ipv6/netmask} is the directive for OpenVPN to hand out ipv6 addresses using routed/tun. After that, it's just a matter of configuring your system routing/forwarding. [21:46]
mnathani_. /56 I think is routed
rather /52
[21:50]
brycec/56 would be the standard boundary [21:55]
mnathani_I used to have 3 VPS [21:56]
brycecBut /64 is the standard "smallest subnet" [21:56]
mnathani_so the /48 is actually /52 on each of the 3 vps [21:56]
brycecAh [21:56]
mnathani_so v6 didnt depend all on one VPS
atleast not one one of my vps, I later learned that all of ARP's v6 is on a VPS
[21:56]
mercutioyou mean it's all bridged? [21:58]
mnathani_routed
ARP routes each /52 to a different fe80:: /vps
[22:01]
brycecThat's nice of Garry. Certainly non-standard [22:15]
..... (idle for 21mn)
mnathani_non-standard indeed.
up_the_irons: I appreciate it
