RandalSchwartzso I've been googling zfs vs btrfs
I'm surprised people just haven't given up on btr
[17:59]
mercutioi have xfs, ext4, btrfs and zfs in usage now.
btrfs has given me more issues than any of them
zfs is second.
btrfs seems like a "nice idea" but it seems to be getting hampered somewhere. reiserfs was pretty nifty and similar in a way.
i used reiserfs years ago, and it did go pretty well. but the lack of kernel inclusion really hurt.
zfs is a huge memory hog. and i'm sure simplifying things could improve performance in some areas.
[18:01]
technoid_is reiserfs still being developed? [18:03]
up_the_ironsi used reiser ages ago and it was good [18:03]
mercutiotechnoid_: last i knew it was being updated for new kernels. that was reiser4. i used reiser3.
iirc.
[18:03]
RandalSchwartztoo bad about reiser :) [18:03]
technoid_well, murdering your wife does tend to get in the way of development [18:04]
mercutioas much as reiser seemed like a mad lunatic, for one guy to push something so strong and make so much impact i think it was significant.
technoid_: i'm not 100% convinced he did it.
but even if he did, the core issue is that it was reliant on him. it's the main issue of charismatic leadership.
[18:04]
technoid_the bus principle [18:05]
mercutiosteve jobs was pretty charismatic leadership orientated. i'm suprised apple has done so well in spite of his absence.
i think it's a bit different from the bus thing.
[18:06]
RandalSchwartzmore like a train thing [18:06]
mercutiothe bus principle is only one person knows how to do something
the charismatic leadership is more like everyone gets direction from one person.
so in charismatic leadership people become like puppets. and the leader is the puppet master.
[18:06]
RandalSchwartzand in the case of Puppet, doubly so. :) [18:07]
mercutioit's actually one of the most effective leadership styles when things are working well.
but if they die things tend to fail
[18:07]
RandalSchwartz"Prosecutors agreed to a deal whereby Reiser would reveal the location of his wife's body in exchange for pleading guilty to second-degree murder. "
seems like if he knew where the body was... he likely did it. :)
[18:08]
technoid_yeah [18:08]
mercutiohmm
could be
[18:08]
technoid_and who just randomly takes the passenger seat out of their car? [18:08]

oh - and the timing of buying the socket set
[18:09]
mercutioi didn't follow [18:09]
RandalSchwartzto remove the seat
and having the precise socket size on the wrench to remove the bolts of the seat. :)
[18:09]

[18:10]
RandalSchwartzyeah - still doesn't justify murder

[18:10]
mercutiothere was also some hoo hah about the pgp author [18:10]
technoid_of course he was crazy, he wrote a filesystem [18:10]
RandalSchwartzbut he didn't write *zfs* [18:11]
mercutioerr phil zimmermann
randal: zfs was designed by committee
it's just an intellgient scientific committee
[18:11]
RandalSchwartzand yet, it's nearly sane. go figure.
I saw a screenshot where someone had added "designing this makes you kill your wife" for the wikipedia "filesystems" page
and "No" for all but reiserfs

merc2is pcbsd popular?
pfsense?
[18:27]
RandalSchwartzyeah that [18:27]
merc2pfsense seems to be kind of popular.
i wish freebsd would update their pf version
[18:27]
RandalSchwartz... http://twit.tv/show/floss-weekly/101 [18:27]
merc2i read somewhere that there was some idea/notion about doing so [18:27]

the problem is the new pf has an incompat syntax
[18:28]
merc2yeah i tend to not watch videos [18:28]
RandalSchwartzI listen to the audio and ignore the video [18:28]
merc2i thought the problem was that freebsd screwed with the source in weird ways when they did their smp stuff [18:28]
RandalSchwartzbut I tell my guests that most of the audience also does [18:28]
merc2i prefer to just read normally
transcripts for me :)
[18:28]

technoid_there is a new pfsense ofrk called opnsense

hmm
[18:30]
technoid_no, it is on fbsd [18:30]
merc2the cruise was wonderful my mom enjoyed... [18:31]
RandalSchwartzI wonder why pfsense was forked
pfsense seemed to be on the right track
[18:32]
merc2it seems like the kind of thing that woudl be forked for no good reason. [18:32]
technoid_i caught atweet about there being some hate between the fbsd community and pfsense [18:32]
merc2maybe they just wanted to change direction a bit. [18:32]
RandalSchwartzahh... answering my comment - http://opnsense.org/about/about-opnsense/ [18:32]
merc2oh i thought you mistyped it ;) [18:32]
RandalSchwartzI remember chuckling with a guy from france because he created a linux distro called "frog linux" with a frog as a logo.
oddly enough, he couldn't understand my amusement.
[18:34]
merc2i don't get the amusement either?
it sounds no worse than mint linux to me
[18:34]
RandalSchwartzthe derogatory term in the US for frenchmen is frogs. [18:35]
merc2oh
yeah i haven't heard that
[18:35]
RandalSchwartzneither had he
hence my chuckle
[18:35]
merc2:)
yeh i get it now
[18:35]
RandalSchwartz... http://www.knowswhy.com/why-are-french-called-frogs/ [18:36]
merc2do you have the term chinks there?
so it'd be like having chink linux here.
[18:37]
RandalSchwartz"there"? Where are you? [18:37]
merc2by chinese.
new zealand.
[18:37]
RandalSchwartzoh. yeah, and also a derogatory term
and yes.
although I don't think "chink" would make a good logo
[18:37]
merc2heh [18:38]
RandalSchwartznot as good as the frog logo for "frog linux" :) [18:38]
merc2i'm trying to think what other one there is [18:38]
RandalSchwartzn-word linux :) [18:38]
merc2heh
nigger is positive here
probably because of lack of hate crime here
[18:39]
RandalSchwartzsome day, I hope to visit the land of the kiwi
but since I'm not allowed in the land of the felons, it will be hard.
[18:40]
merc2what? [18:41]
RandalSchwartzoz [18:41]
merc2oh cool, australia is the prison colony not nz
but yeah, why aren't you allowed in oz?
[18:41]
RandalSchwartzbecause I'm a felon, and they've met their quota, apparently. [18:42]
merc2oh [18:42]
technoid_they never did take that off your record? [18:42]
merc2from how many years ago?
i think they generally allow felons here.
[18:42]
RandalSchwartzin the US, I'm legally allowed to tell everyone "I've never been convicted of a crime" [18:42]
merc2at leats to visit and as long as it's not recent [18:42]
RandalSchwartzso yes, the record is expunged.
but foreign governments have their own memories and rules.
I'm also not allowed in Canada
[18:42]
merc2people convicted of offences for which they have been imprisoned
were you imprisoned?
[18:43]
RandalSchwartznever imprisoned, no. [18:43]
merc2charged or convicted of criminal offences over a set threshold . [18:43]
RandalSchwartzwww.lightlink.com/fors for details [18:43]
technoid_I am not allowed to hold political office in Indiana because my charge was plead down to a Alternative Class A misdemenor [18:43]
merc2then it's just a question of whether you are over some threshold
we're pretty liberal here in general
you can probably apply if it fails automatically
[18:43]
RandalSchwartzoddly enough, I've been in 50 countries since the conviction [18:44]
merc2you don't even have to be a citizen to buy land [18:44]
RandalSchwartzbut only canada and australia give me grief. [18:44]
merc2http://glossary.immigration.govt.nz/Goodcharacter.htm
so yeah you can't be imprisioned for more than 12 months in the last 10 years.
that seems pretty liberal to me.
[18:46]
RandalSchwartzyeah, could probably go to nz
provided I didn't connect in oz
[18:46]
merc2most flights dont' connect in australia
but most flights go via california
and california is closer to new zealand than australia.
[18:47]
RandalSchwartzI heard stories about a guy getting on board a flight in san francisco to go to "oakland", but ended up in "auckland" [18:47]
merc2ouch.
i'm in auckland
[18:47]
RandalSchwartzwait... california to new zealand is closer than australia to new zealand?
that doesn't make sense.
[18:48]
merc2no [18:48]
CaZeRandalSchwartz: Full House. [18:48]
technoid_how far into the flight do you have to be before you know there is a problem? [18:48]
merc2than california to australia [18:48]
RandalSchwartzoh, well, of cours.e [18:48]
merc2well some people think differently because australia is further north
and you do have to go north
but the east outweighs it
[18:48]
RandalSchwartzNo... I can look at a globe. :) [18:48]
merc2well most people also don't realise how big africa is :) [18:49]
RandalSchwartzbig enough for all those lions :) [18:49]
merc2technoid_: it doesn't really matter, once you're on the flight you can't get off. [18:49]
technoid_true [18:49]
RandalSchwartzand the sahara [18:49]
merc2if he didn't have a passport
and had to stick around at the airport that'd suck.

even if he had to stick around the airport or go somewhere close to the airport it still sucks.
