pjs: up_the_irons is 10.1 an option for installing?
FreeBSD 10.1*
on new orders.. I'm about to submit a request for 2 new VPS's and I'd rather not upgrade them manually from 10.0 to 10.1
mercutio: if there isn't you could just do iso install?
pjs: mercutio yea of course.. I've never done that on arp but it can't be too bad
mercutio: yeh it should be fine.
i've done iso install with openbsd on arp iirc
RandalSchwartz: that's been the *only* way I've installed here. :)
pjs: Gotcha :) I'll look into it
up_the_irons: pjs: not yet

mercutio is now known as Guest59124
RandalSchwartz: ugh
so I'll have to get console access somehow and do that when not live
oops... those should have been privmsg
Guest59124: erk not again

mercutio: release with password doesn't identify
RandalSchwartz: so I've been googling zfs vs btrfs
I'm surprised people just haven't given up on btr
mercutio: i have xfs, ext4, btrfs and zfs in usage now.
btrfs has given me more issues than any of them
zfs is second.
btrfs seems like a "nice idea" but it seems to be getting hampered somewhere. reiserfs was pretty nifty and similar in a way.
i used reiserfs years ago, and it did go pretty well. but the lack of kernel inclusion really hurt.
zfs is a huge memory hog. and i'm sure simplifying things could improve performance in some areas.
technoid_: is reiserfs still being developed?
up_the_irons: i used reiser ages ago and it was good
mercutio: technoid_: last i knew it was being updated for new kernels. that was reiser4. i used reiser3.
iirc.
RandalSchwartz: too bad about reiser :)
technoid_: well, murdering your wife does tend to get in the way of development
mercutio: as much as reiser seemed like a mad lunatic, for one guy to push something so strong and make so much impact i think it was significant.
technoid_: i'm not 100% convinced he did it.
but even if he did, the core issue is that it was reliant on him. it's the main issue of charismatic leadership.
technoid_: the bus principle
mercutio: steve jobs was pretty charismatic leadership orientated. i'm suprised apple has done so well in spite of his absence.
i think it's a bit different from the bus thing.
RandalSchwartz: more like a train thing
mercutio: the bus principle is only one person knows how to do something
the charismatic leadership is more like everyone gets direction from one person.
so in charismatic leadership people become like puppets. and the leader is the puppet master.
RandalSchwartz: and in the case of Puppet, doubly so. :)
mercutio: it's actually one of the most effective leadership styles when things are working well.
but if they die things tend to fail
RandalSchwartz: "Prosecutors agreed to a deal whereby Reiser would reveal the location of his wife's body in exchange for pleading guilty to second-degree murder. "
seems like if he knew where the body was... he likely did it. :)
technoid_: yeah
mercutio: hmm
could be
technoid_: and who just randomly takes the passenger seat out of their car?
RandalSchwartz: and then puts it back in before 9 days later. :)
oh - and the timing of buying the socket set
mercutio: i didn't follow
RandalSchwartz: to remove the seat
and having the precise socket size on the wrench to remove the bolts of the seat. :)
mercutio: hmm apparnetly he tought she would harm their children
and the government wouldn't do shit.
technoid_: i believe he was afraid she would leave the country with them
mercutio: could be
maybe he was crazy
RandalSchwartz: yeah - still doesn't justify murder
although I can see it being a motivation
mercutio: there was also some hoo hah about the pgp author
technoid_: of course he was crazy, he wrote a filesystem
RandalSchwartz: but he didn't write *zfs*
mercutio: err phil zimmermann
randal: zfs was designed by committee
it's just an intellgient scientific committee
RandalSchwartz: and yet, it's nearly sane. go figure.
I saw a screenshot where someone had added "designing this makes you kill your wife" for the wikipedia "filesystems" page
and "No" for all but reiserfs
... https://www.flickr.com/photos/ronocdh/2651155110/
mercutio: is it just me or does reiser kind of look like the openbsd guy
theo de raadt
RandalSchwartz: a bit
mercutio: well different nationality
RandalSchwartz: I've met theo face-to-face
debating bsd vs gpl with aaron seigo in brazil
mercutio: wow.
RandalSchwartz: aaron being the kde guy
mercutio: sounds heated.
RandalSchwartz: of course, I was the one that dragged aaron over to theo :)
mercutio: i haven't met any interesting famous open source people
i'd like to meet uhh
that openbsd networks guy
yuhh
RandalSchwartz: I've done indoor racing with Linus
he uses the name "Tux" as his handle there
mercutio: i don't want to meet linus :)
RandalSchwartz: so he's the official "tux racer" :)
mercutio: something irks me about his mannerisms :)
RandalSchwartz: I've also beat him at 9-ball, but he consistently beats me at 8-ball.
for FLOSS Weekly, I've interviewed most of the most interesting people in OSS
the show is a privelege
privilege
merc2: Henning Brauer
mercutio: i still can't paste into this window
technoid_: I met Randal at Texas Linuxfest, but just in passing.
mercutio: and there was someone else too
technoid_: bob beck from obsd would be cool to meet
merc2: Claudio Jeker
RandalSchwartz: yeah been trying to get beck on floss weekly for a while
a lot of people meet me in passing :)
merc2: oh i'd also like to meet the dragonflybsd guy
RandalSchwartz: we had the pcbsd guy on floss
and also the freebsd-as-firewall guy... forget the project
merc2: is pcbsd popular?
pfsense?
RandalSchwartz: yeah that
merc2: pfsense seems to be kind of popular.
i wish freebsd would update their pf version
RandalSchwartz: ... http://twit.tv/show/floss-weekly/101
merc2: i read somewhere that there was some idea/notion about doing so
RandalSchwartz: I remember doing that show from florida
the problem is the new pf has an incompat syntax
merc2: yeah i tend to not watch videos
RandalSchwartz: I listen to the audio and ignore the video
merc2: i thought the problem was that freebsd screwed with the source in weird ways when they did their smp stuff
RandalSchwartz: but I tell my guests that most of the audience also does
merc2: i prefer to just read normally
transcripts for me :)
RandalSchwartz: so they have to describe things for the audio audience
merc2: scan for the good bits.
RandalSchwartz: yeah, I prefer text to audio or video
except when I'm on a plane or driving
merc2: i don't want hello how are you how is the weather :)
RandalSchwartz: hey - we keep floss weekly tight. :)
unlike many of the other twit shows
technoid_: there is a new pfsense ofrk called opnsense
s/ofrk/fork/
merc2: based on openbsd?
BryceBot: <technoid_> there is a new pfsense fork called opnsense
merc2: there are advertisements for cachefly
hmm
technoid_: no, it is on fbsd
merc2: the cruise was wonderful my mom enjoyed...
RandalSchwartz: I wonder why pfsense was forked
pfsense seemed to be on the right track
merc2: it seems like the kind of thing that woudl be forked for no good reason.
technoid_: i caught atweet about there being some hate between the fbsd community and pfsense
merc2: maybe they just wanted to change direction a bit.
RandalSchwartz: ahh... answering my comment - http://opnsense.org/about/about-opnsense/
merc2: oh i thought you mistyped it ;)
RandalSchwartz: I remember chuckling with a guy from france because he created a linux distro called "frog linux" with a frog as a logo.
oddly enough, he couldn't understand my amusement.
merc2: i don't get the amusement either?
it sounds no worse than mint linux to me
RandalSchwartz: the derogatory term in the US for frenchmen is frogs.
merc2: oh
yeah i haven't heard that
RandalSchwartz: neither had he
hence my chuckle
merc2: :)
yeh i get it now
RandalSchwartz: ... http://www.knowswhy.com/why-are-french-called-frogs/
merc2: do you have the term chinks there?
so it'd be like having chink linux here.
RandalSchwartz: "there"? Where are you?
merc2: by chinese.
new zealand.
RandalSchwartz: oh. yeah, and also a derogatory term
and yes.
although I don't think "chink" would make a good logo
merc2: heh
RandalSchwartz: not as good as the frog logo for "frog linux" :)
merc2: i'm trying to think what other one there is
RandalSchwartz: n-word linux :)
merc2: heh
nigger is positive here
probably because of lack of hate crime here
RandalSchwartz: some day, I hope to visit the land of the kiwi
but since I'm not allowed in the land of the felons, it will be hard.
merc2: what?
RandalSchwartz: oz
merc2: oh cool, australia is the prison colony not nz
but yeah, why aren't you allowed in oz?
RandalSchwartz: because I'm a felon, and they've met their quota, apparently.
merc2: oh
technoid_: they never did take that off your record?
merc2: from how many years ago?
i think they generally allow felons here.
RandalSchwartz: in the US, I'm legally allowed to tell everyone "I've never been convicted of a crime"
merc2: at leats to visit and as long as it's not recent
RandalSchwartz: so yes, the record is expunged.
but foreign governments have their own memories and rules.
I'm also not allowed in Canada
merc2: people convicted of offences for which they have been imprisoned
were you imprisoned?
RandalSchwartz: never imprisoned, no.
merc2: charged or convicted of criminal offences over a set threshold .
RandalSchwartz: www.lightlink.com/fors for details
technoid_: I am not allowed to hold political office in Indiana because my charge was plead down to a Alternative Class A misdemenor
merc2: then it's just a question of whether you are over some threshold
we're pretty liberal here in general
you can probably apply if it fails automatically
RandalSchwartz: oddly enough, I've been in 50 countries since the conviction
merc2: you don't even have to be a citizen to buy land
RandalSchwartz: but only canada and australia give me grief.
merc2: http://glossary.immigration.govt.nz/Goodcharacter.htm
so yeah you can't be imprisioned for more than 12 months in the last 10 years.
that seems pretty liberal to me.
RandalSchwartz: yeah, could probably go to nz
provided I didn't connect in oz
merc2: most flights dont' connect in australia
but most flights go via california
and california is closer to new zealand than australia.
RandalSchwartz: I heard stories about a guy getting on board a flight in san francisco to go to "oakland", but ended up in "auckland"
merc2: ouch.
i'm in auckland
RandalSchwartz: wait... california to new zealand is closer than australia to new zealand?
that doesn't make sense.
merc2: no
CaZe: RandalSchwartz: Full House.
technoid_: how far into the flight do you have to be before you know there is a problem?
merc2: than california to australia
RandalSchwartz: oh, well, of cours.e
merc2: well some people think differently because australia is further north
and you do have to go north
but the east outweighs it
RandalSchwartz: No... I can look at a globe. :)
merc2: well most people also don't realise how big africa is :)
RandalSchwartz: big enough for all those lions :)
merc2: technoid_: it doesn't really matter, once you're on the flight you can't get off.
technoid_: true
RandalSchwartz: and the sahara
merc2: if he didn't have a passport
and had to stick around at the airport that'd suck.
actually auckland airport really sucks.
even if he had to stick around the airport or go somewhere close to the airport it still sucks.

merc2: it's kind of lame that flights got sslower.
i'd much rather a 7 hour flight than a 14 hour one.
like what happened to concordes.
RandalSchwartz: better than that guy stuck at CDG for years.

the only one onn that list from the US is snowden.
