up_the_irons: anyone used these? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167192
looks like a wicked price for a 480GB SSD ($199)
mhoran: What's with the skull? Haha
up_the_irons: it's hip brah
maybe this is better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148821&cm_re=500gb_ssd-_-20-148-821-_-Product

ChanServ sets mode: +o up_the_irons
m0unds: up_the_irons: anandtech seems to like that model w/caveats about hw crypto & power consumption
brycec: Ooooooooh that's shiny, 480GB for $200, good brand...
acf_: we have our own tools for that anyway :P
oops wrong terminal :P
brycec: lol
mercutio: was that intel 730?
oh mx100
brycec: mercutio: yes
mercutio: is also cheap
brycec: "Intel 730 Series"
mercutio: i was thinking of getting mx100s before
they have higher block size ;(
i kind of decided to wait.
i think they shifted to 16k block size from 8k block size
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
mnathani: Brycebot: no
BryceBot: Oh, okay... I'm sorry. 'i think they shifted to 16k block size from 8k block size'
mercutio: what happened to seagate 600s
last black friday they were really cheap iirc
but i had no idea if they were good
RandalSchwartz: anyone here used ipmiview (java) before?
having trouble firing up the console.
mercutio: oh god
that program is terrible :)
you mean the downloadable ipmi tool from supermicro right?
RandalSchwartz: yeah, the 20 files or so
mercutio: yeah i didn't like it
try the commandline ipmitool
RandalSchwartz: where do I get that?
and I need to see the screen
to see what went wrong if it won't reboot
mercutio: it comes with most os's
except windows :)
setup serial console?
RandalSchwartz: I don't know anything about serial consoles like this.
brycec: http://www.paranoid.nl/~marieke/freebsd/ipmi/ipmicons.html should guide you on setting up the SoL console
(More recent FreeBSD's won't require recompiling the bootloader, according to http://serverfault.com/questions/574351/serial-over-lan-on-freebsd-10-0-with-supermicro-x9-scm-f)
RandalSchwartz: Garry says "I used IPMIView. It's the "KVM Console" tab and then click "Launchr KVM Console". Do you see the row of tabs on the bottom after your login?r"
brycec: The tl;dr of it is that the SoL enumerates as just another serial port, and setting up SoL on the server is no different than setting it up for a standard serial console.
RandalSchwartz: again, something I'm not familiar with.
brycec: (Pffft what does "Garry" know, he's know up_the_irons </sarcasm>)
s/know/no/
BryceBot: <brycec> (Pffft what does "Garry" no, he's no up_the_irons </sarcasm>)
brycec: (d'oh)
RandalSchwartz: I dont see the KVM Console tab this time
and the one time it showed up, when I clicked on it, and the screen opened and immediatley closed.
I tried that repeatedly.
now i'm not even sure how to get to there. :)
mercutio: ipmitool -L USER -I lanplus -H <ip> -U <user> -P <pass> sol activate
try that to access it
where ip is the ip of the vpn thingy
err through the vpn
and user and pass is listed on same page as ip
RandalSchwartz: Invalid privilege level USER
ahh, and my error message doesn't show -I anything
mercutio: oh
i had to add -L USER in
maybe you don't need it?
RandalSchwartz: when I remove -L USER, still balks at that -I
mercutio: different implementations are different :)
it doesn't liek -I ?
RandalSchwartz: oh I left out the IP
mercutio: -I intf Interface to use
wtf
RandalSchwartz: Not in my error message
mercutio: oh
it doesn't mean physical interface
RandalSchwartz: oooh... got this:
[SOL Session operational. Use ~? for help]
mercutio: sweet
you got it then
RandalSchwartz: and then what?
mercutio: now you just haev to make sure it's outputting to serial :)
so you didn't need to use -L USER?
without it i get Set Session Privilege Level to ADMINISTRATOR failed: Unknown (0x80)
RandalSchwartz: I hit return and it said ProcessSOLUserInput - entered
ProcessSOLUserInput - read 1 chars
no - didn't need the -L or -I
-L level Remote session privilege level [default=ADMINISTRATOR]
***: meingtsla has quit IRC (Ping timeout: 258 seconds)
RandalSchwartz: is this supposed to show me something when it boots up?
mercutio: ok :)
yeah
***: meingtsla has joined #arpnetworks
RandalSchwartz: how do I get the same view as the VNC console
mercutio: and while in system
you don't :)
you setup your system for that
use the web interface to do the beginning bits
you're still struggling to get the web interface to go at all?
RandalSchwartz: I can see the console
but I can't interact with it
mercutio: with the web interface?
i didn't actually try typing anything into it i think :)
RandalSchwartz: Hmm. now I can't find it again. silly web interface
oh, the first thing was "preview"
where am I supposed to be trying to type on the console?
mercutio: remote control
console redirection -> launch console
RandalSchwartz: I do that and nothing happens.
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
mercutio: does it open a popup?
RandalSchwartz: nope
nothing. nada.
mercutio: it should have a launch.jlp or something file
RandalSchwartz: "have", as in how? in the window?
mercutio: it trys to download it in chrome for me
then you click on it
and it says it may harm your computer too :)
RandalSchwartz: oh maybe it doesn't work in safari
mercutio: then there's a black screen with some menus at top etc and you press a key
nah it should download the same i think
look at the downloads?
it's .jnlp
but you could try chrome if it's not coming up with a download or a pop up
RandalSchwartz: ahh... chrome is better
I get launch.jnlp
mercutio: ok click on that
RandalSchwartz: but now I can't open it as it is from an unidentified developer
mercutio: turn off the unidentified developer crap?
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14369
RandalSchwartz: now that doesn't open up. :)
mercutio: weird
RandalSchwartz: worked in chrome, not safari
mercutio: does your vpn try and default route ?
RandalSchwartz: I think this thing spooked safari :)
ok, reading that page, it's what I tried
mercutio: settings in security & privacy preferences allows you to run untrusted apps by default
which is probably good :)
RandalSchwartz: but there's no java setting to allow this now. apple removed it.
mercutio: unless you're into the mac app store.
it's the general os x blocking afaik
android doesn't let you run untrusted apk's by default too
which is annoying if you want to sideload something not from app store, like from a recent build or such
RandalSchwartz: yes... the "medium" setting is now gone.
mercutio: from what i can tell it's not the java setting that it's hitting but the normal unidentified developer thing?
RandalSchwartz: anyway, can't run it
mercutio: that's why i was saying you should disable normal os x blocking
which is under security & privacy preferences
RandalSchwartz: I'm familiar with the other popup
this is specificially getting past that, and getting to a java exception
mercutio: oh
RandalSchwartz: java used to have three levels
now just two
mercutio: so now it's low and high?
RandalSchwartz: apple took away the bottom one for security reasons
yeah, just high and super-high
mercutio: ahh
RandalSchwartz: medium is ogne
gone
mercutio: damn
this sounds frustrating :)
RandalSchwartz: you're telling me
mercutio: do you have a windows vm?
RandalSchwartz: especially when up_the_irons said he was able to get it to work
no... nothing windows
I want to watch him do it.
I no longer believe I have the same tools as what he says is working
mercutio: he got it working on os x?
RandalSchwartz: and this is stopping two other important things
we need to upgrade openssh, and that's a core os thing
so I need to get the machine to freebsd 8.4 patch 19
but I don't dare update the kernel without a console
mercutio: yeah
RandalSchwartz: and eventually, this machine needs to be freebsd 10
or 11 if we wait long enough :)
mercutio: it's 10.1 already i think
RandalSchwartz: well 8.4 is EOLed in a few months
so I have to get this machine up
jun 2015 I think
mercutio: i prefer the hp lights out
on freebsd i have console="comconsole" but it's on a hp system
in /boot/loader.conf
but freebsd disables normal console when enablign serial
that may have changed, but this is freebsd 9.2
RandalSchwartz: yeah - I don't have any console="" there
just zfs and a few tunings for postgres
mercutio: oh i still do have normal console
i dunno why i thought i didn't
hp you can show text mode console withotu serial too :)
just with ssh
brycec: mercutio: "comconsole vidconsole" should enable both, according to the links I shared earlier
mercutio: but yeah i'd try and get java workign first.
brycec: it seems i have both anyway?
-: brycec shrugs
mercutio: i really thought i didn't have both for some reason
-: brycec has no ipmi boxes
RandalSchwartz: ... https://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/serialconsole-setup.html
mercutio: i hate ipmi
but i like it too
it's nice that there's a semi-standardised way for computers to get serial console etc.
but i find just having ssh easier
the recent hp stuff lets you stick your key on too
BryceBot: That's what she said!!
brycec: HP stuff has ssh-on-bmc/ipmi?
(Or are we talking about http://www.xenoclast.org/nca/ now? :p)
mercutio: yeah
dell and hp have had ssh for ages
brycec: cool
mercutio: it's dropbear
actually it's romsshell
it seems
with the dropping prices of nand etc, i wouldn't be surprised if there's proper embedded servers etc soon with automatic updates and the like
m0unds: saw some sandisk extreme ii 960GB disk for ~$499 usd
mercutio: wireless routers are already shifting to nand. nand has better wear leveling.
so doing updates all the time and treating them like a normal file system isn't so bad
RandalSchwartz: ugh... still have a bit of hangover, and it's noon already.
normally don't get hangovers, but drank some wine yesteray.
mercutio: wine can be special like that
white wine can give me headaches when normal alcohol doesn't
RandalSchwartz: pdx sky club doesn't have hard liquor
mercutio: even before the next day.
RandalSchwartz: just beer/wine
hangover happily gone... replaced by a vodka/soda buzz. :)
